It's OK to Liken Shigeru Miyamoto to Walt Disney (NY Times article)

What about Mii's? Will they ultimately take over?

Interesting...I've got part two of my article hitting the site soon. And it actually covers a lot of this train of thought so I wont go too in-depth with my ideas but I certainly feel that the characters created by Nintendo are memorable because of the world they interact with (I hinted at this in part one of the "you to mii" article.)

However, I think that if (like anything) you sully your characters reputation with poor tie-ins and lacklustre output *cough* Sonic *cough* then your market share is going to shrink. Nintendo seem to know what got them to where they are today. Or should I say "who" got them to where they are today: And so they work meticulously to make sure characters are involved in special games with real soul.

I'm sure I don't need to point out that story of games isn't top of Nintendo's list but mechanics are. If the mechanics feel good then the machine is finely tuned. Nintendo are the best damn engineers of games in the world. And Miyamoto is the George Stephenson, James Watt or even Thomas Telford of the gaming world. He knows what he wants and more importantly he knows how to put the pieces together so that they work.

Look at character design over the years. Some of the best are household names from Disney...Yet all feature in "classic" movies such as Mickey Mouse to (the parody that is) Buzz Lightyear. Characters need quality to become memorable. The designs of Nintendo characters ARE solid and colourful and memorable on the eyes yet the quality they are associated with is what makes them top sellers.

Oh shit...I ranted again...

Thoughts anyone? Too much popcorn booming in this place afterall!
