Router to switch

Ok heres the setup:

 

Netgear router (x4 ports)

Thats how it is in place at the mo'.

 

Want to extend network with a Netgear switch (fs605) in place of pc4

 

Like so:

 

Netgear router (x4 ports)

I've tried router <-------> switch with a crossover and a standard cable.

 

No traffic displayed on switch from the Router (with the suggested port and all others) Get traffic from PC's connected together via switch.

Cannot ping router at all (time out error) Router connects directly to PC fine (although there are fixed IP's and DNS's)

 

Its a total minefield and I think i've exhausted any obvious errors....I *hope*
