  1. Languages

I tried Ukrainian but found the alphabet was quite a big barrier for me - I don't know if they improved the interface since then, I may dabble in it again as an introduction to cyrillic. I know a little Polish (or knew probably more accurately) so that helped a lot... it's just the cyrillic adds a whole new level of complexity that is tough!

Yeah, I think I do best reading and listening to source material and figuring out the grammar from that, in a similar way to you I think. Well. I've been watching MacGyver in Spanish, the plots aren't too complicated and the language isn't either in most episodes, I've been able to follow everything so far (watched a season and a bit :D) Also watched Bruce Almighty in Spanish.. again generally not too high a level, but then most languages aren't in day to day situations. I'm mainly stuck for the next language after Spanish... I tried German but I generally don't find it interesting. Polish is cool, but resources are very sparse.. Italian interested me, but I am already struggling between French and Spanish, so I want to leave romance languages for a short while. Romanian I have a little too.. portugese is WAY too close to Spanish, so I won't do that to myself. The scandinavian languages seem like more accessible versions of German, broadly speaking... and once you learn one you pretty much have three... decisions decisions!
  3. General Switch Discussion

I know but I hope the eventually is far far far way down the line... even if I bought 8 Wii U's with splatoon, I wouldn't be able to get 8 people round to play it with me... the only person I physically know and likes the game is my nephew! and this is also why I'm not sure I would go for splatoon 2. if they give a free dlc that allows you to play matches with computer "AI" when the online dies... then at least (in theory) the game could be played a while. But I recently realised, when online dies on splatoon, the game dies with it. It's not like mariokart 8, smash bros etc. where online may be a HUGE element in the replayability, but it still has non-online elements to hold interest.... so.. if splatoon 2 had no online (and no free dlc/changes etc) at the moment, as it stands, would it be a fun game as a single player game? And to quantify that , splatoon was an amazing game, and I have dipped into the single player mode occasionally since completing it, but I've not once loaded the game with the intention to play the single player mode... Also does splatoon two have a proper two player mode?
  4. General Switch Discussion

See.. I have a smart phone with a dead battery, no intention of getting another.. no smart device... so I'm hoping they'll have a PC version of this app so I can use it.... Also.. hoping splatoon doesn't slowly die now splatoon two is out
  5. Languages

I hate the tenses "lessons" in duolingo, I really struggle on them. I don't know if I am learning the phrases themselves, or the language, but I'll just be typing out a response and "feel" I need to write that form of the verb.. or that connective.... Also able to watch tv programs in spanish and follow the plot (though not all the detail, there are parts I only get the generally sense of... but I'm liking that at least. Next step is to start practicing speaking with more adventurous sentences. As far as duolingo is concerned, I'm just coasting, I'm shattered when I get home from work and have so much to do I really struggle to find time for duolingo, so I'm (most days) doing a timed "strengthen" thing, get one answer right and leave it there. I am trying to watch Spanish language films etc though, so it's more just the pure learning side I'm ditching, I'm still working on my Spanish. Is anyone else finding duolingo more effective now than it was in earlier iterations? probably mainly for German/French/Spanish learners as I think those are the oldest English language courses (may be wrong there though! :D)
  6. Splatoon 2

I think with splatoon we were a bit starved of multiplayer online games - mk8 and super smash bros was about it really (3rd party titles online servers seemed fairly dead) The Wii U had a bigger install base than the switch currently has, the switch has plenty of games coming in the short term, so I think this will be less of an explosion than splatoon 1. The only thing I wish splatoon had was salmon run - I really wanted a random weapon mode to mix things up a bit! hope I get my hands on a switch before online dies down (but if it keeps selling steadily hopefully servers will be reliable!)
  7. Splatoon 2

I think they should put a sprinkler option in for teams that are a player down.. say 3vs4 but the 3 player team has the sprinkler... the sprinkler just floats around the stage, spreading ink.. if the opposing team shoot it down (give it the same health as a regular squid) then it respawns and continues doing the same. it wouldn't purposefully target objectives etc, but at least it could help cover a bit of turf, draw fire etc.. something like that as an option at least could be interesting. internet where I am is appalling right now, which is the main reason I stopped playing splatoon I love the game but without a net connection, it's nothing. Hopefully my net connection situation will change, but tbh I think I will be skipping this as by the time I get a switch the main splatoon buzz will have gone and unless there are compelling local play options, I think there will be other games I'll get more out of.
  8. Kirby 2018 (Switch)

Well this and Yoshi make me more likely to get a switch sooner than later. My fiancée loves those two ip's (love may be an exaggeration) and wanted a 3ds to play both their last outings. While I do wish their more young male orientated franchises would get revisited I think the family focused ones are a better move for the time being, with more narrow and specific franchises coming out as the console grows it's user base, so the narrower target audience will be bigger. They're releasing Metroid, hopefully next year (guessing no release date to avoid a similar situation as BotW/Starfox had). F-zero/1080/waverace etc would do better getting a release in 2019 to allow mk8 to drop off the radar a bit first. Battalion wars would be a good call for next year though!
  9. Metroid Prime 4 (Switch)

Metroid Prime 4 for the Wii U probably. Then shifting over to Switch and adapting the game to take full advantage of the unique features of the Switch.
  10. General Election 2017 - MJ popcorn gif edition

haha! she tried to use brexit as cover for a load of very shitty policies, opening the door for Corbyn. I wanted conservatives to lose a seat or two, now a majority is impossible. Wonder what this will mean for brexit...
  11. Terrorist Incidents In London

looking at WW2 with japanese and jewish individuals, I think it's clear neither option is a good one. The main problem is who are "them". if it is too wide (as in the US with the japanese internment) you harm the innocent, if it is too narrow you fail to protect your citizens anyway. I know minority report is hardly mind blowing, but I think it touched on the difficulties of condemning an individual for a crime that is yet to be committed.... also I initially read the comment as a fear... that as more terrorist attacks took place it would drive society to the extreme of either deportation or internment.... http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-40155829 this is the main issue... funding of these organisations. If the funding is cut they lose their business model, where these attacks basically serve as adverts to remind their donors that they exist.
  12. Languages

The main problem I found was having a framework of learning. Generally I found people with intermediate level English, which was far stronger than my level in their language, or people who were interested in learning but not teaching. Basically it's kinda tough as an English speaker/beginner. For intermediate speakers I think it's viable though.
  13. Languages

Sounds like the one. Shame, and Rosetta obviously saw it as a real threat to their business... which is pretty rubbish tbh. Wouldn't be surprised if they tried the same thing with duolingo, it basically does what rosetta does, just better. My Dad has the rosetta software and frankly it is shockingly bad! (so anti recommendation there! )
  14. Languages

I remember there was a good site once, basically a bit like duolingo but with user generated content, and native speakers would give feedback. It was far from perfect, but I enjoyed using it... until Rosetta Stone bought it up, stripped out most of the good stuff and started pushing their language courses super hard. Not a clue what it was called, or if it still exists.
  15. General Election 2017 - MJ popcorn gif edition

and probably what people would want to vote on would vary... really the brexit vote should have had all the main parties spell out their brexit vision, and tbh I imagine that would have been so watered down no one would have voted brexit (essentially saying we'd still be under EU regulation and freedom of movement I imagine... aside from UKIP hardest of hard brexits and conservative "um..." Tbh I'm surprised parties (lib dems, labour mainly) didn't try forcing the conservative hand more by having a comprehensive and well publicised plan of what brexit would look like under them... then asking the conservatives to do the same. Would have kinda screwed the conservatives a bit, trying to get a brexit policy together - it is unacceptable imo that cameron called the referendum with no plan for if the outcome was leave. His resignation for me was "oh... oh... oh dear... project fear II has failed...I.. I actually don't have a clue what to do now. Time to jump ship!" anyway, the time for specifics was PRE brexit - ALL the parties failed there. I hope the UK gets the best brexit government possible in the current situation, though I have not a clue what that would look like.
  16. amiibo (NFC)

I do wonder if the situation is ok for Nintendo though. not restocking puts pressure to purchase at release, rather than waiting for price drops. that allows them to keep a good profit margin. If Scalpers move in quick enough to remove reasonably priced amiibo from the market, no problem, Nintendo will release a new batch. People who are on the fence for certain new figurines jump into a purchase "just in case". Better to pay £50 for 5 amiibo and find only 2 were wanted than to buy 1 amiibo for £50 and only be able to find that second one for £70... (hopefully an exaggeration on those prices but I hope the point is clear?) Basically so long as new figurines are released the "money on the table" goes toward a different amiibo. Nintendo don't care if you buy a Mario amiibo or a Link one...
  17. General Election 2017 - MJ popcorn gif edition

you think the nation is equipped to deal with that kind of thing? I do think having one coherent vision for brexit from a leader in westminster would be best. I've not registered to vote because basically I disagree with all the parties too much to vote for any of them.
  18. not a clue what this lightening skill is, but I guess all will be revealed when I defeat the last divine beast on my list! I'm in no rush in any case!
  19. tbh my battle skills aren't so great, I've tended to use a lot of bombs up to now, I'm doing more direct combat but I'd say I'm quite weak really, part of why I'm just traversing the world a bit to give me a little extra experience! My parry technique is pretty much non existant, I'm 100 hours in and rarely use the shield in battle and I think I have parried once I'll just stock up on fairies a bit before the final battle!
  20. I think the 900 korok locations is a good idea... just don't think having to find all 900 was such a great one I'm just wondering the country side at the moment, I think it will probably take me 24 hours to find all the seeds independently But I'm basically going at things organically - I'm yet to bother taking on a Lynel yet, I can take down the Hinoxs, Talus' and Guardians now, so really having the Lynels to still be wary of makes traversing the world a bit more interesting... I suspect I will tackle one soon though, especially as I need to upgrade some gear. I only just realised how to find the seeds from those lily pad circles, so a fair bit of work left for me! For those who have got all the item slots, how did you go about it? personally I'm not using shields/bows so much so I focused on hand weapons, but certain battles I've been in have gone through a few shields (probably something I need to work on ) so I'm thinking I might need to work on building up my shield bank a bit more. But in terms of Ganon... how many weapons did you guys get through? my current plan would be to use the master sword straight away so it has the maximum recharge time available, but I was wondering how many more weapons I might need? there are a few shrines I can harvest ancient weapons with 60 damage etc, would that be the best plan? (though they are slow... which could be an issue...)
  21. Yeah it's the sand seal race I was referring to! but yeah, looking forward to finishing this game off. I'm getting better at spotting probable korok seed locations, though I only have about 1/6th of them so far! Finances are really tight for a while right now, thinking I won't be buying games until I get a switch (if I get one!) so it's working out well that this game has a lot of procrastination potential. I'm yet to fight a Lynel, though I will need to at some point to upgrade armour! Right now I am just wandering Hyrule collecting materials, trying to discover Koroks and shrines. When I feel like it I hit the strength test shrines to harvest guardian parts... really not getting lucky with ancient core drops to upgrade my ancient armour, though still loving the armour as it is, makes guardians far more tolerable as enemies! Also the silver bokoblins... they start appearing according to how many divine beasts you hit?? Just I don't recall seeing any in the prelude area... but there are several in there now?? Oh I went back to the temple in the prelude area... I remember I was really reluctant to engage any of the guardians in there... I wasn't sure if any walkers were there, so I was really nervous and avoided them as much as possible! even with silver bokoblins around, the area seems so docile to me now! harvesting a few regular arrows in the prelude area in preparation to buy some ancient arrows... I think I may do mini tours of the various areas, just to familiarise myself with them and get comfortable with the whole world geographically. Should also help me to find a few more koroks!
  22. so glad I read this... I knew there were 120 shrines, but for some reason I didn't consider the possibility of one actually inside the castle! I was planning on doing all 120 before tackling the final divine beast (though it seems 1 shrine is inaccessible till I beat that one.. so it was already 119!!) and heading to Ganon!
  23. I had a star fragment land just in front of Hyrule castle today... I made my way over to it as quickly as I could, but those guardians are so irritating! I paraglided in, dropping and then redeploying the paraglider to avoid the fire, once I landed though, so stressful.. with guardians swarming round me, I was jumping and dodging so much it felt like 1000m hurdles :| and then when the star fragment was almost in reach three guardians pinned me in, no sooner was I standing up after recovering from the first blast than a second would take me down launching me further away from the fragment :| I did manage to grab it in the end, think someone mentioned they disappear at 5... well when I grabbed it I checked the time and it changed to 5 anyway, couldn't be bothered with taking all those guardians out right then (and don't think I could have either) so I headed off to a new shrine. Once I have all 30 hearts I think I'll go to the camel and see what goodies there are to be had
  24. General Election 2017 - MJ popcorn gif edition

So May is on a net of 10%, Corbyn is on -23? Conservatives on a net of -2%, while Labour is on -10%? or am I reading that wrong?
  25. I'm not a huge zelda fan, but I do have to say, the narrative in Windwaker seemed a lot more... "epic". I wouldn't say it is a mediocre game, but it is more "breath of the wild" than "Zelda". It does feel like 2 games set in the same world... the Zelda game has the 4 divine beasts and Hyrule Castle.... perhaps activating the towers and upgrading the sheikah tablet should be included in that. The very first area felt far more directed and stronger, beyond that I think too much freedom was given to the player. If each area, each tower, had a specific story line link (not just memories... but perhaps the directed story in each area could bring the player right up to the memory to massively increase the chance of "stumbling" upon them....) Basically the 4 areas with a beast have storyline, Hyrule castle does, the plateau does, etc etc. But I've come across several areas that are just "there" with no purpose in the game for existing. It would be good if the DLC actually gives them some reason for being plonked in there!!! fortunately I enjoy the BotW and walking round fairly aimlessly, experimenting with different mechanics and solving the shrine puzzles, hunting for new shrines and koroks.... But a bit more Zelda would make the game a LOT more interesting.
