  1. work for the nhs, was a bit sick on mon/tue, and stayed at home. dont have covid but bosses are panicking.  most likely going to receive the at risk letter soon so i'll have to isolate for 12 weeks.  Don't think my boss wants to spend the money/can be bothered to have me do at least some work at home.... so i don't know what money to expect as pay :/

Oh noooo. Hope they don't drag too much for you.

Wasn't working today but got called in to come pick up my desk PC, now I've got the entire setup I normally have at work on my kitchen table. I find it unsettling for some reason.

its been 2 days and i'm losing my marbles.... i wish my work would let me do something at home but its too much effort for them to have it setup lol

  3. Well I might be biased being female but my body toughens up after a while and i felt like a fuckin' powerhorse doing 5x5 three times a week and oly (leg heavy) once a week.  But women are apparently able to recover from frequent load better than males.  I'd be interested to know how you get on.  I didn't really find my oly suffered for doing squats a lot.  Mentally it was a bit taxing getting to the upper limit of what you could squat and continually adding, or even staying at the same weight so frequently.  I think a 3x5 could work, maybe even a 3x5 at 80% 5rm could work too.

Managed to do 32.5kg 5x5 today. :peace: I think I've never gotten past 35kg, mostly because I got injured/lost motivation in the past.

This time I'm more careful playing football and my motivation is as high as it can be. Let's see how it turns out :D

    get itttttttttttt!

I used my belt for the first time over the weekend.  Feels good to have that support and being able to brace against it certainly pushes up the weight i can lift.

  5. I got a 90kg squat, and attempted 100kg (which got half way up)

Lots of rows, GMs, RDLs in my future.

Did some snatches this evening, its nice to be able to still do them.  Rhomboids are smoked though....  Which partners well with the back work I suppose.  My squat failings are in my back, rather than my legs, i fail halfway up (which apparently is unusual in a lifter) which is usually indicative of a weaker core/back.  Which is not wrong as i've had injuries (prolapsed discs x4) on top of arthritis and let my back go to hell.

  6. Doing 5x5 squats (at what could be a mere 5kg from your 1rm) 3 x a week is soooo taxing on your body.  But even the inventor himself says its not really an intermediate or advanced programme, i do believe a lot of people advance onto a 5-3-1 type program after.

I just loved it.  my strength gains were crazy, i ate food constantly, and i frightened the crap out of the daft gym rats..... never had there been a chick in the squat rack before let alone one using the big plates ;-)

Yeah, I did the regular 5x5 last year until I got injured but I wanted to focus a bit more on my lower back this time. Especially since I suffer from the occasional back pains. After a week of training it feels like it's gotten better already. Might just be placebo effect, though :D

Sometimes it really is as simple as getting the muscles activated again.  Good for you :)

I didn't catch that documentary, but it sounds pretty interesting. Might try and track it down later.

I don't think it's that controversial a statement, but I do still think that there is a "moral" element to this. I think as soon as we start forcing people to do things with their bodies (whether they're alive or dead), then it's just dangerous territory. Morally, I think humans should help others and I think organ donation is a very generous way to help others in need. But, I still think that you should give your blessing to do so. The choice should still be there. So, from my point of view, it's about giving people the information to want to make that choice. Not necessarily making it for them.

Morals aside, I think it's a fantastic way to help other people who are in need or even just for the benefit of science. I'm very much for it.

    There ye go :)

I dunno, I just feel some of these religious nuts who can't even say the word cancer would soon have a change of mind if they were on the other end of it.

I'm likely jaded because i'm exposed to more of the above mentioned religious nuts than sensible people lol

Sounds good, but 5x5 is not my cup of tea at all. I guess it depends on what your body can handle, but Deadlifts will seriously tax you once you start pushing your limits. You may want to have working sets, e.g. 3 sets building up to 2 "heavy" sets. 5 sets of 5 reps at a heavy enough weight will wipe you out.

Agreed.. its a very very good beginners programme, and maybe has its use for intermediate level on a short term training schedule...  but once you get to the ceiling of your beginner gains it just becomes a grind and its incredibly taxing on your body squatting heavy weight for so many reps so often.  Towards the end of my SL life I was walking around like a zombie completely physically taxed... and I also did a 4th day every week of heavy cleans..

I pretty much owe SL for developing my squats, but it definitely runs its course.

Interestingly I've started "wave" training with my coach... today we did squats, and cleans.   5-3-1 for 50,60,70, then 5-3-1 again with 60,70,80

  10. Maybe this is a controversial opinion....

I think while medicine is not advanced enough to be able to replacate human organs, I feel like it should be our duty to give life to someone in our death.... I mean even if you believe in the afterlife, you ain't taking your body with you and leaving it to rot underground, or burning it doesn't seem sacred to me...

If I have any organs left when i die (unless i get killed in an RTA thats probably not going to happen) I'd happily give EVERYTHING to ensure someone gets their life extended.  Or they can use me for medical studies.

I dunno if anyone caught the documentary on a few years ago, following a couple of people with various types of cancer who decided to donate their bodies to science... its definitely an eye opening watch.

Finally found an equivalent for Lo Salt/Lite Salt in Germany. It's still quite expensive at 4€ for 200g, but it's better than paying 10€+ for 350g via import. Electrolyte intake won't be a problem anymore.

getttt! :D  Losalt is my fave on keto.

Today I channeled my inner kickass and managed to hit a lifetime squat PR of 80kg.  I used to lift a lot a few years ago, but had a terrible time with tendinitis in my knee* and never managed to get past the 70kg mark.  And it went up fairly easily too.

*Injury acquired on way home from NE meet 2008.. tripped on escalator, landed on my kneecap, straight into the edge of the sharp step, full body weight through it... how my kneecap didn't shatter into a million pieces ill never know... my knee doubled in size that evening though >____<

  12. the rated weight is to prevent them being bent.... they'll still work but not very well.  And you're basing them on being the same thing, which they are not.  a cheap bar is a cheap piece of metal.  an olympic bar is more complex, it has mechanical parts that make it spin and rotate.   I've used bars that have been only very slightly bent, just barely visible with the eye, and they are mechanically fucked, and make it very difficult to do any rotational movement like cleans and bicep curls.

Well, I got horribly drunk last year during keto. The night itself wasn't bad, I was just drunk. The day after, though. Holy fuck...retch all day and the worst headache of my life...

Well, I love drinking so stopping is no option :D

Think I'll just be cautious during drinking. Looks like alcohol tolerance is heavily reduced so I'll pace myself when I'm in the mood for booze.
Did some "research" and there are several ways people deal with/prevent the hangover. Pickle juice, broth (so basically electrolytes), for each glass of alcohol drink one glass of water and drink a lot of water before going to bed. A nice bacon and egg breakfast might help, too.

I'll probably start keto by Tuesday/Wednesday (depending on when the flu is gone; don't wanna put my body under a metabolic change while being ill) and drink with some friends on Friday. Gonna treat it like an experiment

Oh no :( i've heard bad tales of the keto hangover.  I'm too scared to try it to be honest!

I might give keto a try towards the summer.  I have a kitchen full of non keto safe foods so I really need to eat them first.  And also this wine i'm drinking is definitely not keto friendly lol

also all the keto bbqs yesssss

  14. oly kit is just a million times better quality. Even the cheapest stuff.   If you can deadlift 60kg and you aren't wanting to do cleans/snatches (weightlifting) movements, then a regular set of plates is probably fine.  Bumpers are designed to (in theory, on the right floor) be dropped from height without doing too much damage to the bar/plates/floor.

if i had my time again I'd buy 5/10/15 bumpers and invest in ultra thin metal plates in the 20s.

not cheap at £80 per plate!!!

  15. jeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeez either braces have got expensive or i got a bargain.  I had the full kaput, top bottom (no teeth removed), ceramic braces, perm retainers (some of them are still left lol) for 1250 gbp.  My sister worked in the orthodontist involved though.

you're in for a helllllish ride if they use the most solid wire at the end... i felt like pulling my teeth out by the end of it...

but here we are 5 years later and im still using my retainers and my teeth haven't moved a mm.

I missed corn on the cob the most.   Avoid hard taco shells lol (pinged my wire off twice with them)

The wax is helpful (the stuff you ball up and put over wires/bits that are creating ulcers

I really didn't like the private ceramic retainers.... they just ended up stained and made me look like i had no braces, but dirty looking teeth instead.  When i got my braces off I had several dozen people ask me if I had my teeth whitened lol
