I've been following the No Man's Sky news on Reddit for months, shortly before the Foundation Update. As each update has arrived, it has made the game better each time, clearly. I've been waiting for that moment to jump back in, which looks like right about now. Curious to see where they take the game from here because clearly the longterm goal has been towards making this more multiplayer orientated, so it'll be interesting to see what happens now that they've finally got that up and running.

Yeah, whilst I really enjoyed the game at launch - even with the bugs and without some features I was expecting, it was still the game I'd always wanted - it's significantly improved.

The only major things I'd say I want in the future would be gas giants, more things to do in space (which may be coming NEXT week - sorry) and more interesting creature and biome variations. The latter of which I think is something that will be tweaked and improved upon with every update, as they've already proven.

I'm actually a lot more excited for third person than I thought I'd be. I guess after three hundred hours of first person it's nice to change it up. And I have always wanted to see my ship as I fly it and adding visual exosuit upgrades and customisation just adds to the plethora of upgrade possibility and progression trees already in-game.

And as fun as it's been to play solo for three hundred hours - it's about time I showed off my freighter! Though that is going to seem pretty lame now we can have our own fleets. Playing with others is going to be a lot of fun. :D

    Hello!

On July 24th No Man’s Sky NEXT will launch as a free update for PlayStation, PC, as well as launching on Xbox for the first time. We are focused on development, but we know people are hungry for details.

Nearly two years ago our small team of friends, with a shared love of sci-fi, opened up the universe of No Man’s Sky for the first time. It was an innovative, weird and at times lonely game. I loved that, it reminded me of the science fiction books I grew up with. It was broad in a way that almost no other game is, but with four updates it has become broader and so much deeper too.

That will be even more true with the launch of NEXT, bringing a full Multiplayer experience. We can’t wait for you to play, but hopefully you can see from the trailer this is a very new experience.

Here are a few things you might notice from the trailer…

    Multiplayer

    • Team up a small team of friends and explore the universe together, or be joined by random travelers.
    • You can help friends to stay alive, or prey on others to survive.
    • Tiny shelters or complex colonies that you build as a team are shared for all players.
    • Fight as a pirate or a wingman in epic space battles with friends and enemies.
    • Race exocraft across weird alien terrains, creating race tracks and trails to share online.
    • Character customisation allows you to personalise your appearance.

    Visual Overhaul

    • The game is fully playable in third or first person, both on-foot and in ship.
    • Planetary rings and improved space visuals make space more beautiful than ever.
    • Dramatically improved planetary terrain generation, ground textures, water and clouds bring the environment to life.
    • Significantly more detail added to ships, NPCs and buildings.

    Unlimited Base Building

    • Bases can now be built anywhere on any planet.
    • Dramatically increased base building complexity and size limits.
    • Hundreds of new base parts.
    • Own multiple bases.

    Command Freighters

    • Assemble and upgrade a fleet of frigates and command them from the bridge of your freighter.
    • Send your fleet out to into the universe, or deploy them to help you as you explore a specific system.
    • Improved freighter base building allows a truly custom capital ship.
    • Invite your friends aboard and take on challenging multiplayer missions from the Galactic Commision Station on your bridge.

This is an incredibly important update for us, but it’s also just another step in a longer journey, and we’ll continue to support No Man’s Sky in this way for the foreseeable future.

On behalf of myself, and the team at Hello Games I just want to say – Thank you. We are so excited to have made NEXT, and to continue to improve and develop No Man’s Sky, because of you, the community who play, explore and share this universe with us. It means so much to us.

We hope you enjoy this and what follows – and we look forward to meeting you out there! Our journey continues.

    Sean

I got into it last month, but I have absolutely no comparison to really make as I never played any of the others. Psychick liked it enough he bought it on multiple platforms, in addition to giving me some birthday monies I dropped on this. Co-op is pretty simple drop in drop out stuff but really it might be worth getting an opinion of someone who played the others. I've seen @somme on a few times since I've had it? This is often my pre/post OW kinda game in it's fairly quick in a d out and is a bit more 'mindless' in comparison.

I tend to solo it while watching trash TV. Haha. It is fun to play with others, though like most games, it's better with friends than strangers.

    Credits just rolled.

Kara and Alice - I discovered that Alice was in fact an Android towards the end - which I found a little odd. I fail to see how that added to the story - unless I missed something? It disappointed me in a way, as I almost lost my concern for her when I found that out. It also took a bit of the emotion out of the ending I got with them.

What you've described, the drop in caring/emotion towards Alice, happened to me as well. I felt different towards her when I knew she wasn't human. And that's when I realised that was the point. The whole theme is what makes us human, or alive - are these androids alive in the truest sense of the word?

I went through the game believing they were. But, when I noticed my emotions towards Alice had lessened because of her revelation it dawned on me that I obviously did think less of androids as if they were less alive than us.

Obviously, this is a hypothetical scenario in a fictional video game, so it's hard to judge whether I will think that in thirty years when this all happens.

Basically I was played, when I thought I was the one doing the playing.

  5. I did find this season took longer to grab my attention that season. It took me five episodes last season to really get into it. This time it was the last two or three episodes - which were great. And I'll watch season three because, as much as this was different from the first, the third may be to the second. And the music the phenomenal. That Heart Shaped Box cover was really good.

  6. The Last of Us isn't really something I'd want to play under time constraints whilst being watched by dozens of other people. I'd rather wait and play it at home, maybe others feel the same?

Regardless this does look to be the ultimate version of Smash. Considering I now live with two other gamers it might be worthwhile picking up a Switch when this comes out.

  7. Ah, another Resi title for me to lovingly purchase and play very little of. (I normally wuss out). Resi 2 is the only one I've ever finished though, so will definitely get it - it's needed a remake for far too long.

I'm surprised to hear you compare this to Michael Bay films. I actually thought there was far less action than the average blockbuster and a lot more heart. Compared to say Infinity War which was literally just action setpiece after action setpiece, with very little else going for it.

Won't get a chance to see it until next week but you've given me some hope. :D

  9. I love The Muppets and love it even more when they go "bad" or more adult. In fact I'm really pleased with this current trend of taking things we loved as kids and bringing them back and targeting them towards adults. Stranger Things is another example. Hoping for some dark children's films-for adults soon (Neverending Story/Return to Oz/Labyrinth - we are getting a Dark Crystal prequel so I guess there'll be more on the way.)

But yeah, not always a fan of Melissa McCarthy but a new film every few years I enjoy.

So where do they go next?

Surely the next game will resolve the confrontations with Freya and Thor during Fimbulwinter and maybe address what happens with the Valkyres. Will it include Ragnarok and Odin? Or could that slip to a third game and a trilogy?

What was also interesting was the Jotnar shrine with the other symbols of Egyptian, Celtic and Japanese mythology would be amazing to explore those as well at some point.

    Spoiler

I read the other day that the director wants to make a further five games. I'd be happy with that as I enjoyed this one a lot more than I expected (I had no expectations as I have never played any of the previous games and had read up very little on this entry.)

I imagine Freya will be pissed for a game and then come around to help defeat Thor or Odin. I noticed the Egyptian symbol as well, so I'm really hoping we delve into Egyptian mythology at some point, as it's my favourite of the mythologies.

Anyway, great game. The story kept me hooked the whole way, which doesn't happen often with games. Horizon is the only other one of recent times I can remember loving the whole way through - actually thinking about it AC: Origins was another I enjoyed.

And it was great hearing Christopher Judge/Teal'c's voice the whole way through. It was a great game, indeed.

  11. Really loving this so far - am around chapter 5 or 6. I was initially disappointed with the overworld being like a retro RPG. I kinda expected the whole game to be the gorgeous cartoon graphics, but I'm over it now. I think I'm taking things pretty slowly, exploring every nook and cranny. The battle system is great fun too, as are the Pikmin!

Are the move controllers essential to play the PSVR, or is it reasonably good without?

For some games they are the only control method. Some can be either the DS4 or Move, some just DS4.

It's worth getting them for the games that do use them. It's the only time (since the first few weeks of the Wii) where I've enjoyed motion controls - they do add to the immersion.

  13. Finally seen the credits after 110 hours - but I'm still only HR29.

The monsters could have been more varied. It may as well have been called Dragon Hunter. The non-dragon monsters were pretty cool though. The only one I hated was the wind one. Even with flash pods it was hideous!

Still playing as much as humanly possible. Looking forward to the DLC. :D

  14. Ugh, the Kushala Daora makes me want to stop playing. No one seems to join that quest and it's a bugger to solo. Too much wind in the last stage, can't move, killed without being able to move. Dull and frustrating. First monster that's really pissed me off.
