corkcrumbs Posted July 11, 2007 Posted July 11, 2007 Just an idea I came up with that's cool but maybe not so useful for the game. I added it to the design doc as well... since I feel I need to make it better, which I haven't.. yet :P Ubiquitous Sight: The Green Emerald. What element in storydriven 1person action/adventure games can be changed upon to have the player taken slightly aback... The camera, or point of view. Through the whole game the player sees everything from a 1person point of view, as if s/he was the avatar in question. Now what if we introduced a magical object of sorts into the game that was supposed to wow the player. The best thing to manipulate to wow the player is changing the pov of the camera. Yes you read right, change the pov of the camera... what do I mean with that? Ok, here's the scenario: Duncan has met an old general from “the first game” whose name is No Opt Caleya. No Opt tells Duncan that the planet they're currently on, the hub of the enemies operations, houses very strange minerals. To prove his point he throws a green emerald to Duncan who catches it. The instant he catches the emerald the view is turned to a birds eye view 15, 20 meters directly above Duncan, so that only head and shoulders are visible. And you have to understand that up until that point the player has seen everything from a 1person perspective. What's interesting is that the player can walk with Duncan using the analogue stick, and pressing and holding one of the buttons on the wiimote causes the point of view to change any way s/he wants, although it will be centered around Duncan all the time, what Duncan does when the view changes that dramatically is that he “tilt and turn” the emerald with his hands, or hand. Release the button and he will hold it--as steadily as he can--so that it will be an over the head view, same as when he first catched it. Pressing a second button on the wiimote and he drops it. A few moments later he has one in a necklace, which of course means that it will not drop to the ground when he lets go of it, but in stead fall to his chest...
