  1. It doesn't use Windows...Windows loads up, you log and then it loads this kinda custom OS on top of Windows...

Aye, it just uses an autostart propriety app as an interface, most likely.

Do you have any other computer in the house other than his laptop?

  2. I'm still running the RTM and it's a pain, I was going to roll back to XP but now I'm wondering if I should get the retail version, maybe that would be better than the RTM?

I recommend to just wait till SP1 and the drivers more refined, in the mean time XP does well save for the GUI "Shing-Sparkle-Sparkle" of vista.

  3. ^ You can copy a new explorer.exe and winlogin.exe into your windows folder from the VISTA disc if you have been damaged.

If you can, just put XP on your computer and get NOD32 for your antivirus, and pick a spyware protection solution(Not windows defender, Try AVG's antispyware for realtime protection, and Spybot and spywareblaster for passive. Its all free save nod32, just don't use for AV norton ,macafee or something equally horrible). Don't use IE if you can, its more prone to infection, get Firefox or something comparable.

Give vista another year to become more stable, and the drivers more concrete.

  4. ^ Its not that difficult the administrative password on windows XP. Being it a company laptop, they probably locked the default admin account, which is accessible if you boot into safe mode without a password. Being its a work laptop, its owned by the company, so unless you are comfortable I would not bother.

WPA is prefered anyway, as WEP is terribly broken security standard. WPA is broken too, but WPA is better for business with MAC address registration. As far as the DS, Nintendo screwed up by using a propriety wireless chipset and not updating its wireless support, but enough rambling on the details.

You best option is just to get the wireless dongle for the DS. If you had a router that supported Linux-custom firmware, there might be more you could do, but Belkin's routers are "blah". The dongle will be the quickest and the fewest steps to get your DS working online, so I recommend it.

  5. NOD32 and Kaspersky have better detection rates than Avast, although avast is still good and better than Norton and Macafee in my opinion.

I typically use NOD32 on my system since its detection is excellent, it has a small memory and resource footprint, and its automation options are not "stupid".

  6. That stinks if they are prioritizing traffic at the ISP level over there. Lucky, there isn't any packeting filtering over here...yet

I recommend upgrading the router firmware regardless.

I have had a few wireless netgears drop bricks worth of packets while using multiple connections associated with peers...and generally crap out. A firmware updates helped.

Hmmm....maybe I should check out uTorrent.

Aye, you should. Think of it as Azureus, but without the crappy and bloated java base...a pudding like base it is...But a flavor you won't generally like...Like coffee.

  7. Well, Epox's documentation is terrible, but regardless...Here is a new BIOS version

    A new BIOS:

    Released: 2003-05-09

    Version: 20030509

You will have to check you current version number by entering the BIOS when the computer starts, or try CPU wizard on the Mainboard tab. This update mentions "Fixed unstable issue when FSB133 CPU is used", of which you have.

Two, you should have that stick of RAM in slot 1, which is the RAM slot located closest to the CPU socket on the motherboard. If that is already, or the change does nothing, try increasing your RAM module voltage by one of the smallest increment.

If you have any information on the RAM you got, manufacture/model,it would be also beneficial.

    G'day.

  8. I bought these about half a year ago.

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_ss_ce/202-6154117-9811830?url=search-alias%3Delectronics&field-keywords=HD555&Go.x=0&Go.y=0&Go=Go

Sound quality is wonderful, the only problem is that you can hear the flaws in lower resolution music. Game audio is very good, especially FPS for positioning. The headphones are open as well, so sound is more natural. Can't beat the quality of the headphones, especially at this price.

  9. Lets pretend that the 90 days are up and nuke norton. Norton is bulky rubbish.

    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

This removal tool will get rid of everything that is norton, even better than the built in uninstaller.

If you want a good AV that has better detection rates and consumes few resources, consider NOD32. Its very good...And you can download on the interblarg as a trial of course...wink wink...I have dirt in my eye.

I recommend killing norton first, then we march onward.

  10. I recommend posting both your motherboard make and model, as well as the RAM. Each motherboard has a list of company tested ram modules which are compatibles by company testing. This list does not mean there are other which will work, it is just the list in which they test series of different RAM modules and tell you which work or do not work with the board.

I agree with jordan, as I know that some of the older Socket-A boards had some issues with DIMMS, but I also know that some BIOS updates increase memory compatibility. One socket A board I had for a friend did not function completely with the memory I gave it, until a BIOS update expanded its memory compatibility.

Depending when they made your board, you may have a very old BIOS compared to the current build on the manufacturer's website.

Of course, it could also be something "borked" on the board or the RAM, but I would bet on the BIOS first. Who knows, maybe the RAM needs a little bit of a voltage kick which sometimes works, but I would start on the BIOS and Mainboard Mem compatibility list.

  11. ^ I replied to your Q above to avoid a double post, but it seems you were quicker than I.

THe main reason for using a 64-bit OS is primarily for additional memory addressing. Performance benefits between the two are just not there yet. Just make sure you hardware has 64 bit drivers available if you really want it, otherwise I recommend 32-bit for the time being. The main reason is that adobe's software is 32-bit compiled, hence there will no 64-bit benefit (If any) because of it.

  12. Motion2000:

Can anyone recommend the cheapest place to buy an OEM copy of Windows Design Premium? I'd rather not have to buy it but might as well I guess.

Also, difference beween 32 bit and 64 bit? Which is best for graphic design work, and possible 3D modelling and animation.

The most tangible benefit for going from 32-64bit is in the amount of RAM the system can address. 32-bit OSes are limited to a 4GB address space which is shared by system memory, Graphics memory(discrete), and other system resources. For example, if you purchased a system with 4 GB of memory, a 32-bit version of windows may only see 3-3.5 GB of the total 4GB of system RAM.

As far as Adobe's Creative Suite 3 premium, the upgrade version is more than half less than the full version. I imagine you don;t have an older version. If you attend university, you may want to check to see if you can obtain a academic version of it, as the acedemic version is the same cost as an upgrade version ( $590 USD vs $1190 USD).

When MS or Sony release the XBox 720 and Playstation 4 you won't expect the Xbox 720 and PS 4 games to work on the 360 and PS3. MS are aiming for the same cut off in Windows OSes in regards to gaming.

Aye, but there is a large difference between the two.

The consoles have a genuine hardware limitation with the previous which is always in the form of a processing increase, and sometimes in the form of hardware architecture change. For example, THe Xbox --> Xbox 360 went from an INTEL/Nvidia base, to a PowerPC/ATI base through which emulation is done on the 360 hardware, via software, to run legacy Xbox games. The big emulation problem was originally Nvidia's GPU microcode on the new ATI console, which there were certain technical and legal baggage.

The only prevention of DX10 compatibility on XP is that MS is not going to put forth any effort for the "Software" limitation imposed by the manner in which they created the vista/Dx10 driver interface. Software is considerably more malleable than hardware, hence the issue with the comparison. It shares elements and conveys an idea, but there is not enough in common to technically compare. After all, you can have two systems with identical hardware specifications that sport a DX10 display adapter, which differs greatly from the console comparison.

As the beyond3d article mentioned, if anything is to happen, it needs MS's help of which is entirely lacking on purpose for business reasons. The best thought-based solution they came up with on XP is an openGL 2.0 wrapper on DX10.

Personally, I don't really care about DX10 features, its the fact that they shunt it off completely from others running anything but vista that has me critical. But, as I mentioned before, I will attempt to assume a state of neutrality on the issue of wether it was implemented from the get go to serve this purpose under the guise of less overhead.

  13. http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/bonjour/

Installs when you install Quicktime. I thougt that could be the issue, so I deleted the file. :P

This is why I use quicktime alternative, instead of the apple quicktime installer as it cuts out some of the extras.

    http://www.free-codecs.com/download/QuickTime_Alternative.htm

    "O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvCplDaemon] RUNDLL32.EXE C:\Windows\system32\NvCpl.dll,NvStartup"

Thats your Nvidia control panel, as I image you have an Nvidia graphics adapter.

    F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\winlogon.exe

It may be a normal process for Vista, but winlogon.exe is a commonly infected file. To completely rule this out, I strongly recommend checking your system with various other Spyware/Malware programs as windows defender does not come close to catching everything. I will provide the direct links to the ones I mentioned in my previous post. I will look more on this processes, but offhand instinct tells me there is some oddity here.

    Spybot:

    http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html

    Ad-ware:

    http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-2007-Free/3000-8022_4-10045910.html?part=dl-ad-aware&subj=dl&tag=top5

    AVG Antispyware:

    http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/tpl/v5#avg-anti-spyware-free

Update their definiations and run the full sweeps.

Someone I was talking with said to NEVER hit "Fix checked" in Hijackthis, as it can fuck stuff up even more.

It deletes the entry. In many cases it can help, it is deleting the "Wrong" item which causes issues. This is why you create a restore point before you do it.

    -----------------------------------

I once again recommend uninstalling quicktime and installing quicktime alternative in its place. Make a restore point and have hijackthis fix the below entries.

    O23 - Service: ##Id_String1.6844F930_1628_4223_B5CC_5BB94B879762# # (Bonjour Service) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Bonjour\mDNSResponder.exe (file missing)

O10 - Broken Internet access because of LSP provider 'c:\program files\bonjour\mdnsnsp.dll' missing

    O13 - Gopher Prefix:

    ---------------------------------

Sending the command "netsh winsock reset" in command line will also reset the LSP stack and would be good as well after removing it.

Test and see. Spyware scan still recommended from those programs I mentioned.

  14. TheGuyFromSparks:

The Vista only games are Vista only because of the Games For Windows thing, which Microsoft wants to keep solely on Vista. This is to promote Vista as a gaming OS in order to encourage more people to upgrade. This probably sucks for those who won't be able to upgrade for a while but that's the nature of business and the nature of PC gaming: Businesses want you to buy the latest stuff right away and in order to play the latest games, you need to upgrade your machine. The fact that Microsoft has done this should come as no surprise.

Most PCs today come with Vista, in a years time you won't be able to buy an XP PC brand new.

The DirectX 10 thing is a separate issue, I'm no hardware expert by any means but there are some articles out there that state that DirectX 10 is intended to be a clean slate of sorts. It uses the new driver model of Vista completely and is therefore incompatible with the XP driver model. As I said, I don't know enough to say whether this is true or not but it sounds plausable anyway. Chances are most people haven't got a DirectX 10 card anyway and those who do fork out for one will probably be fine in upgrading to Vista while they're at it anyway. No Direct10 card? Just play the game in 9 mode. No Vista? Just play the game in 9 mode.

The argument of whether it is possible or not to implement DX10 on XP takes root in the manner MS designed its integration into Vista. I know the DX10 implementation is claimed to reduce overhead by design, but I am critical of MS's explanations on items as they are usually weaved with half truths and business, and the addition of complete void of MS attempt at XP compatibility with DX10. Locking DX9 games from XP is another thing...

As I mentioned a developer has mentioned

    John Carmack:

They're artificially doing that by tying DX10 [DirectX 10] so close to it, which is really nothing about the OS. It's a hardware-interface spec. It's an artificial thing that they're doing there.

I do not dispute that there ARE technical reasons which cause integration issues, I dispute weither these reasons are artificially created to attempt to differentiate a product, as you mentioned "business".

Here is another developer from Falling Leaf systems. They are developing a DX10 layer for XP and comment on whether dx10 is feasible on XP:

    Falling Leaf:

Microsoft is telling the truth, that doing straight DX10 on XP isn't feasible -- the way they implemented it. To implement DX10 functionality standalone (e.g. talking directly to the driver layer) required redesigning large parts of the system, due to DX not being extensible at all. However, we sit purely on top of OpenGL, which already supports all of the functionality in DX10. This way, we can use existing APIs and not have to worry about a new driver layer.

If you want a developer outlook, I frequent Beyond3d and view their material. Here are some nice past reads of mine which give it from a dev standpoint. Not every poster is a dev, but the density of dev/posters there is quite high compared to many other places on the interblarg. The staff are also quite good.

    http://www.beyond3d.com/content/articles/55

    http://forum.beyond3d.com/showthread.php?t=41148

    http://forum.beyond3d.com/showthread.php?t=41991

The first link is on of the best, opting that becuse of lack of MS help

In addition, you mentioned that "Vista only" business program for "vista games", and of course "DX9" backwards compatibility for windows XP. Here is the issue, they are INTENTIONALLY locking DX9 games from XP in this program. Shadowrun is an example of a "games for Vista", as it is DX9 and requires 3-party "unlocking" to run on XP.

So, let me roll back to a state of "neutrality" on the DX10 issue for the sake of discussion. It can be debated that its implantation is for function, but it could also be that it was done in a way which decreases overhead and cuts off support for previous implementations for OS sales reasons. I just hope OpenGL stays in devs minds.

    Shino:

Don't tell me your so naive and can't distinguish Marketing and PR. Every company does this, Apple's "revolutionary" new iPhone, Nintendo's "revolutionary" Wiimote, Sony's "revolutionary" 4D, etc...

Marketing, PR, its an "a = b = crap", its algebra symmetry. I am aware that it exists, but that does not mean I like the notion that it exists as it typically a face value obscuring for the average Joe.

  15. Do you know of any advanced way to disable Windows Defender? I tried that by just unchecking the service and startup entires in MSconfig.exe.

I am using Nod32 for AV and Windows Defender for Antispy.

To my knowledge, that is the way to do it, again I don't use vista as my primary OS. Windows defender is a bit crappy at detection anyway, NOD32 on the other had has a great track record on low resource consumption and detection rates. I would post your hijack log below, and give spybot and ad-ware a a download then a full system scan. AVG also has a freeware spyware scan which also does a decent job at cleaning, but I would not use its active shield.

Can you give anymore details on when it first started? What you were doing before, etc.

    http://help.lockergnome.com/general/...pict52455.html

Thats the only thing i could find on the topic, nice and stupidly complicated too...

Thats not a bad idea to ask for the hijack log. You can find it directly linked below.

  16. And NukeBlaze you are the PC help God; I remember you from NNow.

Gaaah...Don't give me that much credit. I just do what I can.

And I've just looked now about running it windowed but it doesn't let you... however, it does run in "quarter screen" in a small box in the middle of the screen; with everything else blacked out. And because of that it hasn't been stretched and the movies run at full speed. So this is actually pretty Damn good. Unless NukeBlaze manages to convince me to emulate I'll be doing this... Cheers there Colin!

If it works, run with it. I run my FF7 PSX ISOs from ePSXe through emulation, and the graphics are much nicer and you don't have to deal with midi sound from the PC version. Its up to you what you want to pursue. You found one solution that satisfied you, but there are others solutions with better results out there as well.

  17. Well, here are some questions.

Are you running FF7 through emulation from the original PSX discs?

Are you using the PC version of ff7?

Are you using bootcamp or windows virtualization on the mac to run in a windows environment?

-If you want to play FF7 on PC/Mac/Linux, the best way to go is through emulation, regardless. When you get it working, it looks and sounds better than the FF7 PC release, and it is windowed already so you specify the resolution of the emulation. The act of emulation on the PSX Discs is not illegal, thought ripping them as an ISO and mounting the FF7 PSX discs as a game file speeds things up significantly.

Alternatively, if you are convinced that FF7 PC is the route for you, its using DirectX, so I recommend searching out "dxwnd" which enables you to force "full screen" DX games to run in window mode.

  18. ^ So your claim is in line with it not being possible to implement DX10 onto XP, as well as the other has significantly changed? If you have questions or arguments on either I would happily discuss them.

From some developers I have spoken to, and take John Carmack of ID, all have expressed questions on why DX10 is not compatable for XP

John Carmack:"They're artificially doing that by tying DX10 [DirectX 10] so close it, which is really nothing about the OS. It's a hardware-interface spec. It's an artificial thing that they're doing there.

"They're really grasping at straws for reasons to upgrade the operating system. I suspect I could run XP for a great many more years without having a problem with it."

The features are a nice thing, also can be done on openGL2.0, but what angers me is the artificial reason to get people to upgrade.

In addition, another "VISTA" only game, modded to run on XP.

    http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=7833

I don't see how you can claim this is not an artificial implementation, but I would like to hear if you want to tell me...Even if you possibly claim a "Paternalistic" green status with not having the time to bother with such a "peasant" whom has information counter to your constructed reality.

Honestly, I really don't mind if you take notice, even if you believe it as some sort of insult. This thread is Vista, and here it is. Good or Bad.
