According to the NPD Group, which tracks video game sales in the United States, the Nintendo Switch system was the best-selling video game hardware in the month of April with more than 280,000 units sold. This is the second month in a row that Nintendo Switch has led the pack in video game hardware sales, following a record-breaking launch in March. April sales of Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo 3DS family of systems (more than 68,000 units sold) combined to make up almost half of all hardware sales across all dedicated video game systems.

The Mario Kart 8 Deluxe game was the top-selling video game in April with more than 460,000 physical units sold. With digital sales added, the total is more than 550,000 units. Making this number more impressive is the fact that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe launched on April 28, which only accounts for two days’ worth of sales in the reporting period, which cut off on April 29.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild game for Nintendo Switch continued its legendary run, coming in as the third-highest-selling video game in April. The critically acclaimed open-air adventure will receive even more content with the upcoming launch of two DLC packs in the summer and holiday season of this year. The DLC is now available for pre-purchase via an Expansion Pass. 1-2-Switch and digital-only game Snipperclips – Cut it out, together! also saw strong sales in April.

MK8 doing 550k in two days is incredible.

Switch went from 900k to 280k. Not much you can you do about limited supply.

  2. Surprising that it was announced on the Xbox 360. I thought Microsoft had all but thrown that in the landfill.

The game sells very few amounts so maybe they want it on as many platforms as possible.

Not sure why they would ignore the switch yet release on ps3/360. Would love to hear the reason for no Switch release.

  3. Another indie game is at the mercy of NoA.

I honestly don't get this line of thinking, especially as Zelda and Mario Kart are essentially Wii U ports. I've been interested in this game for a while. It's a Sci-fi RPG that takes some ideas and themes from Phantasy Star. I've actually been hoping for a Vita release, as the game would be more suited for a handheld, so a Switch version would have been great. :(

The difference in the curation methods between NoA and NoJ/NoE is baffling.

The whole no ports thing is a nonsense.

  4. It looks like you're pressing L + R on both joycons, which registers it as one controller.

Have you tried pressing SL + SR on a single joycon instead?

    Thank you!!!!

    FC Barcelona loving the switch.

  5. Looks like lots of us were playing Mario Kart in the office yesterday.

Two of us in the office took in our Switches yesterday. Didn't work out quite as planned because with only two switches you can still only play four player Mario Kart. Still we all had fun! And I'm pretty sure a few people will pick one up before the end of the year.

I can't even play 2 player split screen on mine. Whenever I try it never recognises the joy cons as 2 controllers. I have no idea why this happens.

  6. The new Madden game is using Frostbite. EA would have to get that engine up and running on a Switch. Maybe it's not worth their time?

Really can't wait to see how much effort they put into FIFA. If it doesn't have FUT then they may as well not bother with it.

I think fifa will actually still probably sell ok simply cos of the portable factor. However once E3 hits and they announce fifa and its new features and gameplay I don't expect those to apply to the switch version.

  7. From the looks of it they are still looking to see how things pan out.

EA make a killing on the other consoles, so it's not exactly like they need to push something out on to a Nintendo console, especially if their engines aren't easily ported to the Switch.

I can't wait for E3. Nintendo's event should be really telling just how much the big 3rd parties are going to back the Switch.

Yesterday, Tom backed up the rumours about the newest AC game not arriving on the Switch.

The Switch really does look like it's going to miss out on all of the big multiplatform 3rd party releases for the end of the year. Call of Duty:WW2, Red Dead Redemption 2, Battlefront 2, Assassins Creed and Destiny 2 all look to be skipping the console.

If the platform keeps selling investors will keep asking why no software. I have no doubt EA will get software on the switch if the platform is successful. What kind of software is the key question?

  8. No doubt EA don't want to leave that money on the table.

    http://gamingbolt.com/ea-is-excited-...-to-the-system

speaking to investors in a financial call, EA CEO Andrew Wilson noted that the company is now very bullish on the Nintendo Switch, expressing excitement for it bringing an entirely new ecosystem into the fold.

He noted that EA is considering bringing more of its games to the system, in addition to the previously announced FIFA 18

Raymond L. Stochel - Consumer Edge Research LLC

Great. Thanks for taking the question. How are you guys thinking now about the Nintendo Switch post launch? And is this in your new Gen console installed base forecast? Thanks.

Andrew P. Wilson - Electronic Arts, Inc.

So we feel really good about it. Again, we came out early and said that we'll be supporting the Nintendo Switch with our biggest title in FIFA. We have a tremendous relationship with Nintendo and have done for many, many years and are excited by the fact that they have come out very strong and are bringing in a whole new player base into the ecosystem.

We continue to be bullish on it and are looking at other titles that we might bring to the Switch. Our console number that we quoted does not include the Switch at this point, so anything that Nintendo does is additive to that number.

EA seems to view Switch as separate from PS4 & XB1 according to what Andrew said. 'Bringing in a new/different audience' was the phrase used.

Quotes like that make me worry. Shovelwear here we come.

  9. Finally beat the Chinese team in KoF '94. Pretty sure it's meant to be a penultimate team (ie. you wouldn't fight them until you'd beaten all the others).

So gorgeous. I miss the artistry of pixel-based games, compared to pre-rendered or full 3D. For me, even hand-drawn 2D doesn't scratch the itch quite like this.

Onto the final boss... Oh man, this chap is hard! He can defeat you within a couple of moves! Can't believe how bad I am at this game...

Kof has always had cheap final bosses.

  10. The answer to this I think is simple - Trophies and Achievements

MOST of the gaming planet care about these and enjoy collecting them. No matter how strongly you feel about it the other way, you are in the minority if you dont like them. Because of this anyone that has all 3 consoles (which I believe is a suprisingly high number) is going to buy cross platform games on PS4 or Xbox One as they have this feature. Thus game sales are low and developers lose faith in Nintendo

I dont think we will ever see the days again where COD etc is released on Nintendo as that is not the correct market, but games like Final Fantasy (Mainstream, not spinoffs), will only come if there is these features added to the console. Personally I was always a PS3/4 Mark however if they release trophies/achievements onto Nintendo games and a game is cross platform the Handheld aspect of a home console would sell it for me.

Playstation debateably has it with the Vita but not to this extent we are seeing with the Switch. Nintendo has a golden opportunity here for a couple of years to use their new functionality along with the introduction of trophies/achievements (which is needed), to be able to get back on par with the big guns

I want achievements but the lack of them isn't why various third party games are not being announced for Switch.

  11. Switch's first year is good. You don't have to like all the games, but what they've got, combined with eShop, is providing plenty to play. It's partly hoovering up those who didn't buy the Wii U, but that's no bad thing.

E3 does have to be good though, as in "their very best output". Let's assume Breath of the Wild, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Splatoon 2 and Mario Odyssey are going to be the main games from those franchises (perhaps combined with DLC). I'd say E3 2017 actually needs Metroid in order to not be disappointing... a similar story for Animal Crossing. I'm also hoping to see some sort of Kid Icarus game.

Basically, they need to sell Switch to people ASAP, even if that means front loading everything.

At the moment they are practically selling what is on the shelf. No need to panic and frontload. There is enough to content for 2017 to get them through comfortably.
