Don't blame Nintendo, dude. You knew you did something they didn't like - that's why you got the freeloader in the first place, because they wouldn't let you run imported games. So there we have it, honest gamers are treated nicely by the big Nintendo. Those who imported (may their souls lie in the depths of hell!) are being punished! Thou shallt not go to heaven. No thou shalln't.

Do you know when it was released?

there is no version of freeloader thats works with pal wiis. I have researched this and I do actually own a copy that claims to work with wii and it did not. The sticker is in reference to the US Wiis.

However datel have reduced the price of freeloader and they did the same with AR which they have sold out off. Perhaps datel are updating freeloader that will work on PAL Wiis

Once again Nintendo letting their customer base down with silly ommissions that don't account for lost sales, but rather cost reduction and minimal at that. Guaranteed at least 1 million additional PS3 sales now...

Nice signature Solitaire.

I have no reason to believe that shade fellow, he comes on and says it doesn't work? Has he even read the manual..?

Research is great but end of the day there are so many rumours flying around this subject I find it very hard to believe Datel would put "works with Nintendo Wii" on a box when it doesn't.

The datel website clearly states that the new version does work with all GameCube games only.

Obviously I want to play Mario this year though so I'm getting one when they release a Wii version.

do you own a copy of freeloader that claims to work on Wii? No you don't. I do and it does not. Also did I say that nit worked with Wii games, I did not. Freeloader does not boot at all on Pal Wiis FACT. Google it and you get forums with people saying the same things.

Datel make their products for a worldwide market, they don't differ at all not even the covers thats why it says works on Wii.

If you don't believe me then get one one yourself and try it.

People on forums are idiots, it might be the case that it doesn't work- but are you saying that this is the box that you own?

Specifically. It doesn't sound like you're so sure because you say Datel make them for a worldwide market- but this one says European.

There may be a breach of trading standards laws here if they are advertising it as works with Wii- and it doesn't.

This is Datel's main market- Europeans with GameCubes who are now upgrading to Wii and want to keep their collection.

Datel is not going to just skank them out.

Still unconfirmed if you ask me.

As they say about the Wii test.

Alert import gaming enthusiast Francois Grobbelaar tries out his copy of FreeLoader on a US Wii running in GameCube Mode, and finds it works!

Now all we need is for someone to try it on a PAL Wii.I hope it works and there's some way to get Action Replay aswell because deep down we all want to cheat a little :heh:

Or atleast I do.

Well:

I am interested if the FreeLoader works with Wii and Baten Kaitos Origins (US-Version) because if so I would probably buy both...

@Nintendork:

If I see this correctly the old freeloader version worked on all Gamecubes (EUR,US,JP) but the new one only seems to work on the cubes (and Wiis?) that it is designed for (like your posted one says for European Gamecube).

Or maybe this new message is just for Wii-Consoles... Like that for Wii you need a specialist version for each terretory...

Nintendo can just release a mandatory patch to disable any new versions of the freeloader if they want. And I have no doubt they will :(

Now the Wii is fairly functional (bar the rumoured demo channels) there's no need to go online.

I don't think Nintendo would pull a Sony and say you need firmware 2.XE to play this game.

However delivering patches on carts is totally possible and unavoidable.

Mario Kart DS had the WiFi firmware update.

I doubt it will be that easy. Currently the old Freeloader versions don't work on PAL Wii consoles because those use parts of the latest Gamecube modell - where the Freeloader did not work either. So right now their only protection seems to be different hardware in the PAL Wii, that is the reason why the Freeloader works on US/JAP Wii consoles.

To be honest - I hope I don't go to far now but Nintendo seems to be a lot less interested in protecting their property compared to the Gamecube security. A lot of the old security leaks from the Gamecube are still present and with added functionality (Channels, Browser, VC, ...) the Wii provides a big target for tech freaks around the globe.

I believe this time the Wii will be the most "backup friendly" console around ....

Well... I read somewhere on the Internet (of course I don't know if the information is correct or not and I didn't look who old):

That a person bought the Freeloader where it states works with Wii but it didn't work because of PAL Wii. So he contacted (Datel or codejunkies or whoever was responsible but probably Datel) and they said they are currently working on this and that he will get his Freeloader replaced (completely free of course) as soon as the new version that works with the PAL-Wii too is available...

@system_error:

Yeah, it seems that last time they could only make the Freeloader not work through some (minor) hardware-change but not just through software update (btw.: they could have updated the firmware already for some time would have just needed to install the new firmware with a certain game)...

P.S.: Maybe Datel makes the new Freeloader for Wii (not the one for Gamecube used on the Wii) patchable too, e.g. through SD-Card (old disc but uses new content from SD-Card) or something like this...

The worst thing that could happen would be that it will get a "fight" (like with copy-protection creators and their opposites for PC) between Nintendo and Datel although I don't believe this will happen.

I believe Nintendo this time really wanted to make the Wii Region-Free in the beginning but changed because of some unknown reason and if that is like this they don't need to put that much effort into it...

I don't see why Nintendo went out of their way to actively disable half of a library of games we already own. What do they gain from preventing me from playing my copy of Soul Calibur 2 that I have had for 4 years?

Their argument against importing games is baseless, Naruto: Gekitou Ninja Taisen 4 will obviously never see a release on these shores, so I should just submit and never play it? I'm pretty disappointed with Nintendo's decision regarding the firmware update. My hope is that Datel can come up with some kind of freeloader that can be updated online, through the Wii or by downloading updates to an SD card.

Well... Until now we don't know if the will "upgrade" Region Lock through firmware update... Don't think so... Currently it is just that the PAL uses something newer Gamecubes already had. It has nothing to do with the firmware (or at least nothing with a newer firmware)...

What I don't understand is why it is just the PAL-Wiis...?

@Shorty:

I already thought if it would have been better to buy the US-Wii with Freeloader I would have been able to play all Gamecube-Games... Only problem would have been that I would need to always buy US-Games as long there is no new Wii-Freeloader...

But VC-Games might would have been better there...

What brings me to the point is there any possibility known to get US/JP-VC-Games somehow (as far as I know not but I thought I could ask)?

P.S.: How are the Naruto games anyway (I never played one but if they are good I might would get one)...?

Simple, it's not a guaranteed seemless experience when you are forced to buy PAL games in PAL land. If you just so happen to pick up a copy of Freeloader that is out of date- then some games won't be supported.

To your average importer this is no big deal, you just need an update disc but to the unaware it ruins Nintendo's reputation.

Apple won't allow you to use another media player with iPod because you get a seemless user experience- when you have to start messing with drivers and other software it becomes complicated and the user experience is ruined. (it just so happen to be extremely profitable for Apple also)

It shits all over the seal that Nintendo puts on every one of their products.

The US don't import because most of them can't speak Japanese, and don't typically have to wait longer than Europe for a game.

If nintendo really wanted to disable Freeloader it wouldn't work on the American and Japanese Wii's. Freeloader doesn't work in European Wii's because it doesn't work on the latest gamecubes. They could easily change the firmware in USA and JAp to stop freeloader from working there.

So this:

freeloader_GC_packshot_large.jpg

Probably works now. If it doesn't work you can return it and get your money back because it says it WORKS ON EUROPEAN CONSOLES AND ON WIIS.

Nintendork, buy a version of freeloader with that little sticker on, look at the bottom of the disc as it also says Wii+cube and try it in a PAL wii, you will find out that it does not, its just european Wiis. why are datel saying it works, maybe its because they are lazy, there Euro site is the same as the UK site apart from prices and contact details they don't change anything.

As I said try it yourself.

I emailed customer support about compatibility with PAL Wiis twice and have had no reply.
