I need help. Slow performance...

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, I need some help to speed up my computer, it used to be fine but just latley it has been getting slower by the minute. I need a good scanner, something that can get rid of any spyware and viruses but a free version for now :/. If theres anything else you think I could do that would be a great help! :) Ive tried defragmenting... but it didn't do much ::shrug:

Get a new engine.

try a disk cleanup, also, ctrl-alt-del and go to performance, see how much CPU you're using, also, go to processes, see if there are any BG programs that you don't want

Download these for free and run them one at a time:

Adaware

Spybot

What anti virus guard do you use? I have recently found AVG and it is great, I know others here use it to.

AVG Free

Check your start-up registry.

(assuming its win xp)

Start > Run > type in "msconfig" > startup

Uncheck all the programs you dont need to start when you boot up your pc. Leave necessary system32 .exe's and antivirus etc.

Run CCleaner. Run BeClean. Defragment your hard drive. Install Windows Defender. Go to Microsoft Update and install everything they offer.

Yes, make sure it is completely removed. Some anti virus programs require you to get a uninstall.exe from the website so that virus's can't uninstall your scanner. And make sure you reboot between taking the old one off and putting the new one on.

Make sure you update all your scanners before you use them!

You should try defragging your computer too...

Personally i reformat my pc every 6 months of so, helps keep it at a good speed. though i probably wouldnt recommend it unless youve done it a few times before and have multiple backups of everything.

I don't know about you, but the only protection i need so far is Service Pack 2 and an up-to-date windows.

Since i got it, my need for anti-malware programs has been nullified.

As long as you take care browsing teh pr0n.

What? You need an anti-virus program. Doesn't Windows Security Centre shout at you for not having one installed?

The best virus protection is to buy a Mac :P

QFT

I would recommend Avast! over AVG as it looks cooler and AVG has that annoying pig thing.

I used Avast! for a while but it kept corrupting on me (on multiple machines) so I gave it up for AVG.
