IGN: Revolution Horsepower

more powerful than the PS2 and, though the difference is there, the games on the systems look alike.

PS2 games look nothing like cube graphic, the ps2 would die trying to run metroid or wind waker, and you only have to look at the differnce between resi4, on cube then on ps2, one has textures, the other has none. There is a huge differnce, one more noticable then xbox to xbox 360.

Edit: Before you (or anyone else) starts accuasing me of being some ninty fan boy, I do actually have a ps2 (I have 2 actually), and I had a ps1.

Nintendo have said several times it will be 3x more powerfull.Let's wait till we see the game ourselves and there is big differences between GC and PS2

Without knowing Cache, bandwidth,... nothing final can be said about the hardware, but let's just wait for E3. Even then, games won't be finalized, but still if I get games with RE4, Rogue Squadron and WW like graphics, but with betters textures, animations wtvr, I'm fine with it. Played Kameo and CoD2 and they don't like that jawdropping, specially on SDTVs.

Just saw the IGN article about this. TBH I am a little disappointed about those specs, if they turn out to be true.

But at the same time, I'm thinking that it doesn't really matter, with the approach Ninty are taking, making revolutionary games and new ways to play etc it may not need graphics similar to the power of the Xbox360 or PS3.

The jagard edges in cod2 were very off putting, though i only played it for a short time, in GAME (which uses a hdtv), kameo is nice but it looks a bit like xbox +, rather than a massvie leap in gamews design. (saying that fight night looks very tasty).

Who cares about specs? This idea for revolution is based purely on innovation, not having a powerful console.

Who needs graphics similar to those on 360? You dont. Sure they look pretty, but I'd rather have what graphics we have now and have a cheap console instead of paying more for an upgrade.

If Gamecube lasted, so will revolution. Gamecube weak? So what, made it affordable and still had brilliant graphics for its generation.

I want a games console that offers new and exciting things, not a super computer.

As I said is the previous page the graphics could easily be on-par with Xbox360 launch games, and even better, it all depends on the GPU, because the CPU is on-par with a single core Xenon, and all the games are still using just one of the cores...

Revolution is not more powerful, but it is a simple, effective system that follows every system paralelism rule by the book... (if it is like GC that is)... the biggest GC handycap was the available RAM and disc space if those are solved this time around expect RE4 with better textures and rogue squadron 3 games easily... this... just counting on a GC with more RAM... then add a better graphics card with more pipelines and you're set...

It'll easily double the power of GC and Xbox... so picture this... Xbox ran DOOM 3 at 640x480 whereas you needed a high end PC to run it at 1280x960... don't tell me double that power isn't enough to run "Unreal Engine 3" at Standard definition... because it's more than enough.

BigTac is talking about that advanced techniques with pre-rendered graphics which seems to be real time rendering. I agree with what he said, and the VC content has also been confirmed:

Nothing real new and interesting but here a few things I discovered recently.

One another note from a developers one the Revolution's processing ppower and abilities. While most developers do wish that Nintendo a little more raw power in the Revolution, they are extremly suprised on how well done the cpu and gpu is. Looking at the specs you won't think it's capable of what you will see one the screen. As you know, from all the patents relating to the Revolution from new shadowing techniques, texturing methods, pre-rendering graphics but allowing the game to react and play like it wa rendered full 3d, and apparently some more. These are all things Nintendo has got in order to maximising propressing power by use tecniques that use less power to pull it off. But one at least one developer (without a dev kit yet) talked about the his team concern on how much AI and physics will the Revolution be able to do compare to the competition. Also Nintendo is working on get 3rd party support for classic titles and also discussing possiblilities of adding independent games.

Share a little more about your thoughts on that, please!

Sorry for my English. Bye!

I say the specs for the Rev cannot directly be compared to the Xbox. It may not appear high in number but it WILL be highly optimised and efficient. That means it will perform beyond the expectations you would have for the hardware. Dont forget that guy from ATI said "Nintendo, with their help, are trying to make a machine where you dont have to look at specs". So lets wait and see what it is capable of, stop jumping to conclusions.

I don't care about the Rev graphics,if its good its a bonus but its gameplay to me.If we can get games like Zelda ,Resi 4, even Baten Kaitos i'd be laughing

We can fully judge these specs after we what some of the games have to offer (E3)

I hate specs. They're so misleading. It's not the power that counts, it's how you use it.

Exactly ,QFT.I'd never thought that the GC could pull of graphics like Resi 4 and TP

Did you know that standard-graphics-cards have to store every texturelookup in their video-ram. Did you know that Nintendo got a patent which describes a looped-shader-pipeline that recycles the lookup before it goes back to ram and thereby transforms the texture(moving surfaces, bumpmapping-styled surfaces...all types of pixelshader-transformations...)

in one pass!!!! A standard-pipeline gets the texture out of ram, works it sends back to ram, storing it 2 times (for backup-issues), then through the bus back to the pipeline and the next transformation, back through bus to memory...=many passes.. see? this is only one optimisation...

and that there are no added-shaderfunctions like the IGN-bull..source suggests...wait why does he only suggest? if he got an dev-kit he should know lol..! ;(

There are shaders, the gc was the only console that had shader last gen, and ati is really a specialist in shader-technologie(looks much better then Nvidia-shaders) so the source is a total bullshitter who perhaps stole the paper about rev but doesn´t know anything in reallity...

well... GC didn't have real shaders, it had a fixed T&L the thing is, the ISA around it was completly programmable and infact even without shaders it was more powerful doing those than Xbox who had 2 of them...

Also the reason why flipper didn't have a real shader is because only Nvidia and ATi had them at the time, flipper was made by artX, that was bought by ATi later on (and were responsible for the R300/9700pro) but yeah... I don't believe it lacks shaders...

I dont understand why people are shocked.

I've been expecting specs like these for about a year or two. The graphics will be great and we'll be seeing the graphics reach their full potential much earlier on cause its more or less the same dev kit as the GameCube.

The DS is the perfect example of how well Nintendo make their products. It has a ARM9 processor that runs at 67MHz and an ARM7 processor that runs at 33MHz, on paper these figures suck, but you just have to look at the games that the DS has on it to see that figures dont realy matter.

well i think we have to wait for official news from nintendo.

also going back to what someone said about salesmen telling people that they need an HDtv to get the most out of their system, they wont. they will want to sell the most expensive consoles for better bonuses. all they will do is show them demos on HD and say " look at those graphics" kid gets it home and it is a major let down.

thing I'm thinking of is this.

the revolution is 7 consoles in one. If Nintendo get more onside that will be awesome. The only consoles 100% ruled out are the PS1, PS2 and Xbox.

Nintendo can potentially have a near 100% retro console, or at least closer than the 360 or ps3 can get.

That alone makes it worth buying, I'd pay £20 for a replacement GC (mine is on its last legs), a snes costs £20 up town last time I checked, so I'd count a nes, snes and N64 for £50 as reasonable.

then you have the sega and turbogfx too. so I'd count that as £80-£100 worth of console on its own. especially if there is potential of having brand new VC games content created.

the controller, I'd add £40, so upto £120-£140 worth.

we then have what ever the improvement in graphics is worth, and the "3rd" aspects value too.

finally there is games support - obviously important.

Personally I'm not planning on buying the revo on launch - a stance I also held for the DS (but faltered to the point of getting a VIP DS pack ><).

I think I have been proven right with the DS (I would have been getting a ds lite, or at least purchasing the DS when games I actually want are being released!!) so I'm hoping to hold off on the revo until I have good reason to buy it (other than "its new!!!").

not many weeks till the revelation of the revolution..

Revolution currently supports: NES, SNES, N64, GameCube, Genesis, Turbogfx

Will probably have: Master System, Game boy, Game boy color

Will probably support a way down the line: NDS demo's, Gameboy advance

Probably will never have: Saturn, Dreamcast

Hmmmm... random list there.

saturn and dreamcast would be the clincher if they could get them. imagine that. the rev would be the greatest console of all time.

The sad sad truth of the matter is the average jackass kid that buys a console cares about how powerful he is told it is (maybe it's just here in the states) but from that point on he will live and die by it. I have seen far to many people buy Xboxs and feel as if they just enlarged their penis due to the purchase.

Moral of the story: People cannot admit they bought a bad product and if something else is more powerful that means it's better making their product lesser and thus their penis shrinks -_-

penis pluctuation is a problem for most "average jackass kids" in the U.S.A is it?

i believe there have been tests carried out here on a different breed commonly known as the "chav" and they too seem to suffer from the same symptomes.

Aye, it's the same thing you see on gamefaqs with the "My console can beat up your console" fights -_-

Now just imagine living in gamefaqs 24/7

Edit:

I should say that things are much different this generation for a few reasons:

1. The controller

2. The look of the console

3. The hype, there is a HUGE amount of hype following the revo, even in tech communities

I see the power = penis factor being smaller this round but depending on how the marketing and hear say play out we shall see.
