Well, Finland has never lost its indepencence but it was too close because of that damn thing. First we fought the winter war which we lost and we gave U.S.S.R some of our territory. Then we made a deal with Germans (who had sold us to Russians!) and we fought another war with U.S.S.R. And we lost it too and we lost even more of our territory.

After the 2nd WW Russians could even make our Cabinet Ministers resign if the Russians weren't satisfied.

What's the situation like in the present then, does Russia still have a degree of control, or are bygones being bygones?

And, on topic...

I doubt Russia has any power over a EU member.

The Mayan Pyramids of Tikal, not that they had a great impact on world history before european arrival, but it's an incredible accomplishment, maybe even bigger that the Egyptians ones because of the altitude where they we're built.

Finland is free from the control of Russia because Russia is not mighty and scary anymore.

Well they did win, but they didn't conquer our country. And the casulties for us were about 22 800 men lost, but for the ussr it was over 126000. Or even more, no one has ever gotten the exact number. That was in the winter war. In the following war the figures go at about 64000 finns and at least 96 400 for the ussr.

and here's the man behind most of that:

Oh and a little war fact at the end: A Finnish sniper still holds the record for most kills. And he did all those without a rifle with scope, he only used ironsights.

During those wars Finns proved that they can defend their fatherland against a gigantic enemy. According to my source 305 000 Russians died during the continuation war. Some say that a Finnish soldier equals 10 Russian Soldiers.

And here's the best sniper of all time: Simo Hayha. Also known as the white death or Belaja Smert as the Russians knew him.

He sniped over 500 Russians in 3 months...
