Toy Story 4

Watched this the other night and adored it. Lovely story and another fantastic end to the films (until they make another). I would have liked to see other toys have more involvement as it did seem heavily focused on Woody and what was going on there (trying not to be too spoilery.) but was still a great film and the new characters were fun. TRASH!!!!! (Not the film, if you’ve seen it you’ll get it)

Caught Spiderman: Gap Yah (far from home). On Friday.

It's remarkable that the story faces the same unique problems that the commercial aspirations of the creators does - that of immediately following a legacy of success. In Peter Parker's case it's that of Iron Man, in terms of the movies it follows the success of infinity war and phase 3.

Here's what I'll start with - I like the movie. It doesn't take itself too seriously, it understands the characters and their importance, and it throws a couple laughs in. An enjoyable few hours, worth your money. Tom Holland remains the best live action incarnation of Parker,  Zendeya the best MJ, Tomai the best May. Indeed the best parts of the movie are it's quiet moments, when we're just witnessing the characters interacting.

But I get the feeling is that it's all downhill from here for Marvel. The formula is set, and it will just eat itself from here on out.

Allow me to explain myself. Claire Denis, exceptional director, was reportedly offered a Marvel film recently with free reign to do whatever she wanted - apart from the action. The CG would be directed elsewhere (and on hearing this she turned the gig down). And that situation is for me is the growing rotten heart at the centre of these movies. Ever more noticeably these movies allow their directors to do interesting things with their characters, and then are forced to pass it off to a bunch of computer programmers they'll never meet.

Far From Home is a culprit, with pithy dialogue being interrupted by cold CG and spectacle at an almost metronomic pace. It fails to feel like a single vision, a single movie. And the afterthought is uncomfortable.

Reservoir Dogs. Hulu autoplayed it after Veronica Mars ended. Had no plans to watch it but....couldn’t turn it off. Still a classic movie.

Saw Brightburn at the weekend, late night showing at a cinema

I'd give it 6/10, the premise is interesting, but the execution and some plot points were just awful

Spoiler

So the general premise is like a 'What if' Superman was sent to invade and was found as a child and raised as a human

one of the plot points when he 'awakens' to his powers is that the kid becomes distant and unemotional but i don't know if it was just the kid was a terribly wooden actor.

And i don't think the film was ambitious enough or brave enough - during the early phases before he got his powers, the made a point to show the kid was a loner and bullied by kids at school, once he had his powers they continued and you'd think given he was killing people who he had a vuage reason to dislike, that he'd kill the bullies? well they shied away from harming kids for the most part, the only exception was (wierdly given he ignored bullies in the same damn scene) when a girl he liked was (rightly) creeped out by him after he kept poping into her room on a night, let him fall during a trust fall exercise. When the teacher forces her to help him up he tightens his grip and their is the briefest of flashes of him crushing her hand before it jump cuts away. It seemed an odd choice in retrospect given bullies whom you'd think he'd kill he didn't

It just had a weak plot in places, with typical horror movie tropes/mistakes - Parents don't want him to know about his origins, but keep the space pod under the barn next to the house. When the mom finds him in a trance writhing at the locked cellar of the barn? she pretends it never happened. only mentioning it after he has broken the girls hand.

The dad then finally after 10 years of raising the kid starts to think hey that alien we found that looked like a newborn baby, maybe we should have been more careful etc and maybe we have a problem.

They find 'porn' under his bed in one scene and flick through it with a laugh, before finding it eventually switches to gore and human anatomy photos (from autopsies? although later in the movie it could have been from one of his victims) but despite it being mentioned to the aunt/school guidance Councillor its dismissed as a weird fetish..........a Gore porn fetish in a 10 year old? Christ that is not normal in anyone let alone A FREAKING ALIEN YOU FOUND IN THE WOODS

They have a weird country trip where specifically so the dad can give him the most uncomfortable film dialogue i've ever witnessed where he tells him its okay to touch himself and give in to his urges and the kid then reacts by 'can i do it now'

The kid breaks down the door to the chicken coop and rips apart a dozen chickens (off screen) and the dad thinks its him, since he found him in a trance by the coop earlier - the mom? Nope a wolf obviously broke clean through the pad lock and then flung the door across the coop and how could the dad think this, even if the kid had form for being wierd in a trance and suddenly violent.

The kid begins killing and tags the crime scenes with his intials, because you know calling card?

After the dad finally twigs the kid might have killed his uncle and tells the wife, they row and throw away that the comment that in the 10 years of having the alien kid, he's never been ill, never broke a bone, never even cut himself, something that perhaps should have come up earlier since they at this point make it a plot point, when the kid finds the pod and cuts himself on it.

Despite knowing the kid cannot be harmed the final act of the film begins and the Dad Old Yella style takes the kid hunting and tries to shoot him, despite only just before discussing and having it confirmed the only thing that harmed the kid was his alien pod.

The kid eventually kills the Dad then goes home to kill the mom and the stupidity continues.

The kid plays with the mom and she calls the cops before his (inconsistently used) powers cut off the call.

The Sheriff and a deputy are dispatched to the house and are promptly butchered.

The mom makes it to the barn and breaks off a piece of the pod to kill the kid. Calls him over, plays the sop story and goes for a hug and despite knowing with no effort this metal will cut the kid like butter, RAISES HER ARM OVER HEAD TO STAB HIM......Christ! and obviously he catches this and flies her about a mile up and drops her to her death.

A Plane is flying towards him as he does this and it jump cuts to their house only with a crashed plane on it and a newscaster voice over about how a plane crashed killing everyone in the area but the kid - no mention that 30 min before this the Mom called the cops and the town Sheriff and deputy go missing, it would be quite easy to see the discrepancy in times here but who the hell knows.

He's covered up his murder spree so he can continue to kill in secret? nope, news footage with a flying figure over disasters in the town, footage of him flying through an office destroying it, hovering over a field with his initials burn into it! completely invalidating the cover up.

I mean if you don't think about the plot it was enjoyable enough but you can pick it apart

Lion King - 5/6 out of 10 (can't decide lol), it looks incredible and the ambient songs by Hans Zimmer are great, Timon and Pumba are also SPOT ON, just like the genie in the Aladdin remake they have a good mix of the classic characters while letting their respective actors put a bit of their own spin on it.

The meh parts: the lyrical songs are mostly ok but seem a bit more generic than the cartoon.

The bad parts: The amazing visuals are also its downfall, it's almost impossible to put much emotion in a realistic Lion face so most of the time characters are just staring blankly at each other while they speak which makes the VO seem out of place. Speaking of voice overs, they're all pretty weak (apart from Timon and Pumba as I said) - not only do they feel a bit flat but they're don't feel mixed in properly? There's something really off with the audio mixing.

Oh and they completely butchered Scar's song. Despite all of that, it was still pretty decent. It's no Aladdin though, which I fucking love, for more reasons than just Mena Massouds beautiful face.

In a bid to see everything that appears at my local cinema, I somehow found myself watching Horrible Histories: The Movie yesterday. It somehow was not as bad as I was expecting, actually pretty decent in places, pandering in others but mostly fine. The musical numbers were god awful though, and the dances even worse - out of sync and lame, Historical High School Musical it aint. But still, if you're in the target demographic (which I'm guessing is like 11 and under) then you'll find it pretty fun. 2.5/5

On a better note, I randomly picked up Kikujiro on bluray, a Japanese film about a boy who lives with his grandmother and goes on an adventure to find his mother who lives in a far off city. With the help of an older gangster wannabe they travel on an eventful journey meeting lots of colourful (and some very disturbing) characters. It's one of the most heart warming films I've seen in a long time and I haven't felt such a sense of adventure since Slumdog Millionaire. 4.5/5

Rampage (2018)

I love The Rock, and I don't think he's that bad in almost everything he has been in. This movie was fair - probably a 6/10 for me, a pretty good spin on a great old arcade game. The CGI was good, the message was poignant, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan was... himself as in everything he's ever been in, but nice to see him playing against type. If you've got little better to do on a rainy Sunday afternoon, you could do a lot worse than this movie. The bad guys were a bit cartoonish though.

I actually saw the trailer to Horrible Histories and I wanted to watch it because I grew up with the books and the shows. I'm tempted to watch it, still, but I might wait for bluray.

I didn't get a chance to see The Lion King. My friend and I booked tickets and had to walk out during Can You Feel the Love Tonight (which should have been called Can Beyonce Vocal Run and Warble Over Donald Glover Tonight) and we got complimentary tickets to watch it again. Story will be in the Bad Thread. I liked what I saw but I HATED Be Prepared (my favourite song in the film). Love the background music though. Aladdin still remains to be the best live-action I've seen and I still think everyone is way too harsh with it. It was fun, it was faithful and it didn't try to be a dark and moody alternative to the story.

I watched the Lion King last night - it was daytime during Can You Feel the Love Tonight = literally unwatchable.

Nah, I thought it was pretty good. I initially only went to see it because I was curious about the CGI (which was incredible) but I actually ended up enjoying the film far more than I was expecting.

Songs did fall a bit flat, but the voice acting was far less jarring than i expected. All the newer cast did really well.

I actually spent the entire film thinking that Idris Elba was the choice of Scar, and was very impressed. I didn't like Idris Elba as Shere Khan, and was worried he'd do a similarly terrible job at Scar. I thought I'd been won over, since Scar was brilliant, but it turns out it was actually Chiwetel Ejiofor instead.

Timon and Pumba were great, Zazu was great. Yeah, I liked it.

The one thing I would have changed is to replace that weird bland Beyonce song when Simba is running home with the fantastic "He Lives in You" from The Lion King 2: Simbas Pride. That's the song I had in my head when he started running, and imo fits way better, and once I realised they weren't going to play it, I actually got a bit angry.

That Beyonce "song" was generic, unmemorable rubbish.

I wasn't as big a fan of Timon and Pumba as most people. At least compared to the originals

The Mummy (2017)

Kind of encouraged to watch it by my partner, so i did.  I kept comparing it to the 1999 Brendan Fraser classic remake of the original 1932 movie, because the Tom Cruise reboot wasn't much good.  Too many holes, the Mummy itself of Princess Ahmenet wasn't very powerful compared to Imohtep.

Spoiler

You probably couldn't handcuff Imohtep to hold him prisoner, or use sleeping darts to subdue him.  But somehow it was still possible to do so with Ahmenet, who was meant to have similar powers to Set.  I get the Mercury as a way to prevent Ahmenet escaping as she'd be alive still in the casket, but even those without air would eventually die (Imohtep had to be ressurected with the Book of the Dead, couldn't help but notice Ahmenet was able to possess people whilst locked in a coffin.

Yeah, probably won't watch it again.  To me, this was worse than the 3rd Mummy movie (also starring Brendan Fraser).

Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood - 3.5/5 - Story about an actor whos career has stumbled throughout the years and shows him, with his best friend and stunt double, dealing with bouts of depression and alcoholism as well as a hell of a lot of other crazy shit later on which I won't spoil here. Some really great character development and the 60's vibe is incredible, a bit long for my liking though and damn, what's with all the foot shots??

Blinded by the Light - 4/5 - Coming of age film set around an indian boy growing up in Luton in the 80's. Has a lot of heart especially in his two best friends and the relationship with his dad is great to watch. His obsession with Bruce Springsteen can seem a bit silly sometimes but I think it's intentional, I'm sure every teen has gone through a period of obsessing over a singer to the extreme. It reminded me a lot of me discovering Scatman John in my teen years and is on par with about how cool that is lol.

Some pretty harrowing scenes in regards to far right extremists and nazis, shocking how much parallels it has with stuff that's happening in 2019.

The Sun is also a Star - 1.5/5 - Ridiculous sappy mess. Girl is going to be deported the next day - she's about to cross a road without looking either way and with headphones on yet gets pulled back at the last second by the most beautiful man ever. So far, so my kinda film right?? WRONG! Mainly because their acting is so lame, especially the main character, she has about as much emotion as Bella from Twilight. She says something like "oh... thanks. I guess you saved my life"

They get coffee, he's immediately in love with her for some reason, swears she can fall in love with him in 4 hours, they have about 2 years worth of events in that day and ugh. Just no. There's also a scene where it's a close up on his face as he sings to her in a karaoke booth which was very painful. But it's clearly not aimed at me, I can see teens enjoying this and it would probably go down a lot better with a few glasses of wine on a lonely Valentine's Day.

The Art of Racing in the Rain - 3.5/5 - So much better than I was expecting! I was certain this was another one of those "talking dog films where it dies at the end" but it was a lot more than that. The dog does talk but instead of that stupid "lets talk like a 5 year old" shit they usually pull, this dog sounds like a sassy and slightly bitter old man. The main guy is a single man when he gets the dog and so their love for each other is strong and the dog is often commenting on how they are brothers but when his owner gets a girlfriend the dog is hilarious. "He seems to love being around her but I don't see the big deal, and she doesn't smell great", that kinda thing.

SPOILERS

The dog slowly warms to her and then takes a back seat for most of the film, pretty much just narrating. Meanwhile, holy heck. The main guy is into racing, but as his wife gets pregnant he has to reconsider his career as it's not exactly safe or financially stable, not to mention her parents don't approve of it. Fast forward a bit to a few scenes of the kid growing up and bam, mother gets ill. Dad suddenly has to deal with a bunch of every day life things that he didn't previously as she is in hospital. Things get worse, she's diagnosed with cancer. Things get worse, she dies.

The parents hate him for this, believe that if he'd have been home more instead of focusing on his career he could have seen the signs earlier. Bastard dad says this to his face, gets up in his grill and urges him to fight. Our protagonist pushes him away but, as the bastard dad is an old cretin, he falls and hurts his rib. He then tells his lawyer that he was assaulted unprovoked, the grandparents TAKE HIS KID AWAY, and ugh, things just keep getting crazier and crazier. It's a wild ride, man. /END SPOILERS

I haven’t been able to stop thinking about Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood since I watched it, and like a snake engulfing an entire rat in one go, I feel as though I’m still digesting it and appreciating it. I’m gonna have to go back for a second watch and I’m certain I’m gonna have to adjust my score to something higher.

That's funny, the more time I have had to digest the movie the less I am liking it. Started off at a 4, now down to a 3/5. I'm a huge Tarantino fan, and I have always enjoyed his indulgences, but this had none of  the breathtaking dialogue or slick momentum that normally carries me through those moments. I get the reverence for the time that he obviously has, but where as his admiration for Kung Fu movies in Kill Bill was build on a foundation of interesting characters and brilliant set pieces, this movie expected me to care 'just because'.

Take the end where:

Spoiler

You have a similar ending to Django and Inglorious Bastards (both movies I love), but without 2 hours of character development that gives me reason why I should enjoy the catharsis of seeing these bastards die. You get one proper scene with the Mason family, where yeah, they're dicks, but not enough that I want to see a woman have her skull crushed against a mantelpiece. Did the real life Manson family deserving that kind of beating - for movie purposes lets say yes. But now you're relying on the audience knowing that story, because the movie sure doesn't set it up. Half the people I saw it with had no idea it was based on a true story. And why should they? Its American Pop Culture/True Crime from 60 years ago. For me its evident it's another movie made by Hollywood, telling us how important Hollywood is.

You could then argue its not about the ending. But if that's the case, then you're not left with much of a movie. I can't remember once piece of dialogue, one song, or one shot - and that has never happened to movie with a Tarantino before. I was disappointed to say the least.

Been making my way through the Friday the 13th Blu Ray boxset I bought recently. Unfortunately it only has 1-8 as the rest were after the rights were sold so it’s harder for me to get hold of them.

Its been interesting working my way through a horror series that’s ingrained itself into the culture but I had never actually seen before. Realised a lot of the assumptions I’d had about it were wrong.

Some really cheesy movies with bad acting but for the most part really enjoyable.

Moving onto the Child’s Play boxset next. I expect this lot to scare me more. Dolls are creepy enough without being possessed. From what I’ve seen though the puppetry in these is amazing.

Chucky is awesome. Child's Play 2 is the best one followed by Cult, Curse, 1, 3, Bride and then Seed, Can't wait to know what you think of them.

So I saw IT: Chapter Two finally and, after everybody's been telling me it was average, I think everyone is crazy. It was awesome and I absolutely loved it. When I walked out of the cinema, I first thought "great film" but then the more time went on, the more I realised how much I loved it. Much more creepier than the first, the timings were just right, character development was great, the acting was awesome and the last 40 minutes was epic. Epic enough for me to try and find other people to watch it with me again. If not, I'm just going to watch it myself again next week. The casting was absolutely spot on, I couldn't fault it. Pennywise was awesome. Loved it so much.

"IIIII KNOW YOUR SEEEECREEEET"/10 (song is now stuck in my head, lmao)

I also attempted to watch Reservoir Dogs as well. It's so weird but I've seen it so many times and I really felt like watching it. 45 minutes in, I had to take a break from it and I never went back to it. Maybe I was tired but even now, I don't have a desire to watch the rest. So I stuck on The Godfather instead. Classic.

I finished all of them the other day. Not as scary as I thought. I probably spent most of my time, at least in the first 3 just admiring the puppet and animatronic work.

My favoured order is probably a bit different to yours though:

  1. Child's Play 2
  2. Child's Play (1 and 2 have been bouncing back and forth, I'm still not sure which I prefer)
  3. Bride of Chucky
  4. Child's Play 3
  5. Curse of Chucky
  6. Cult of Chucky
  7. Seed of Chucky

I do love them all (not Seed) equally but I liked Cult because they actually brought back the original Andy and Kyle from the second one and Tiffany from the later ones, which I thought added a nice touch of nostalgia for me since I've been following these movies since I was a kid. I also loved Curse for its creepier tone rather than black comedy. Bride is always a great blend of both horror and comedy and 1 and 3 are wicked but 2 always has a soft spot for me. It's the first time Chucky shows more personality as well as a funny but sadistic side to him. The photocopier kill always creeped me out when I was a kid.
