Retro's Zelda game for the Wii has been uncovered

Recommended Posts

So apparently Retro worked on a Wii Zelda game that never saw the light. DYKG has an exclusive video including interviews. The game was to focus on the last male Sheikah. Haven't watched the whole thing yet but damn! Quite a discovery and I never knew this was in the works.

Just finished watching it.

I'd love more people to speak out about cancelled games, especially if 10-15 years have past.

The gameplay sounded awful. The battle system being compared to whack-a-mole should have been a massive red flag.

Watching this has once again made me question Retro Studios capabilities. They've had numerous cancelled projects and haven't released anything new since Tropical Freeze. This video kinda highlights just how rough the studio is.

Hilarious how Nintendo didn't want to have the games made but seemed to have taken the Master Sword idea and the BOTW Champions from Retro's projects.

There's some legit new details about Project X in there that have not been made public before... very interesting!

And... A SECOND cancelled Retro Studios Zelda title!? Oh my! I'm very interested in hearing about Heroes of Hyrule! :D

You have to remember that the studio went through a huge period of turmoil around this time; as Mark Pacini attempted a coup as he exited the company and founded Armature Studios.  DKCR was the project that got the studio back on track, and it was a massive success; both critically and commercially.  For all the trials the studio has gone through, their track record of released titles is second to none in terms of quality (though certainly not quantity).

Indeed... Explains a lot about where EAD/EPD got their story ideas from ;)

Indeed but they still have project management issues given that they've not released anything new since 2014. Something was clearly cancelled again between then and before they got put on Prime 4.

Man, DYKG has been making some truly excellent videos as of late.

Glad to hear about Retro's problems. Like H-o-T, I've been wondering what the hell's been happening with that studio for their output to be so low. This helps answer some questions, but also, this is the second major leadership problem I've heard about them (the first one being the guy who used Nintendo funding to host a porn website in 2002).

Anyway, sad that those rhinos never materialized, they look so cool.

I’m impressed DYKG were able to sit on this for so long as it sounds as though they’ve been collecting info and trying to find and interview people for a while.  A real find to discover this without more details being leaked earlier, and also speaks to the credibility of those who worked on it for not revealing more.

The premise and story sounds interstate and different.  I agree with others though, the actual gameplay doesn’t sound too good.  All very interesting to hear about though!

Yeah, agreed.  DYKG have really come into their own over the last year or so.  They do still do a fair bit of lazy regurgitation content, but they’ve been doing a lot more independent investigative journalism as of late; I’ve been very impressed!

Plus they host Liam Robertson’s Game History Secrets series too; which is always a must watch when it hits!

If I'm recalling correctly, his Metroid Wii U video had hints about Metroid Dread still being a thing. This was years before Dread was re-announced/announced/whatever you wanna call it.

Real shame that the Heroes of Hyrule pitch wasn’t picked up.  I like the concept, the progression mechanics are very reminiscent of Eternal Darkness, mixed with Four Swords Adventures, and I like the idea of a bite-sized Zelda that focuses on more tactical & puzzle solving gameplay over combat.

Also… yeah… the BOTW team totally stole the Champions wholesale from Retro.  Even the concept art is strikingly similar!

This concept definitely had legs to be something good... I like the idea of sealing Ganon in a book, bring it back to CDi :heh:

I'm more worried about the fact that Strategy games are supposed to offer a lot of choice and variety on how to play, but their pitch kinda sounded like the solutions were linear and clear-cut. Then again, if it's just puzzles, that's fine too, it just wouldn't be a "Strategy" game per se.

The channel, which frequently reports on trivia from a specific game or franchise, has been issued a takedown notice from Nintendo. This takedown pertains specifically to Did You Know Gaming's video on Heroes of Hyrule - a Zelda game for the Nintendo DS akin to Final Fantasy Tactics, that was pitched to Nintendo by Retro Studios.

In response to this notice, Did You Know Gaming stated it considers this move by Nintendo a "slap in the face for video game history preservation".

"This was a journalistic video documenting a game that Retro Studios pitched to Nintendo nearly 20 years ago," the team wrote.

Nintendo....crazy fools.

Yeah it does seem a bit far. It's so old and Nintendo isn't going to do anything with it.

Unless they are? Let's not forget what happened with AM2R. Get HYPE!

It's not that, it's just them reacting to internal documents being leaked.

I wonder who "owns" the documents given it was Retro's pitch. Based on Nintendo's IP of course so maybe they part own but blah.
