I guess the question is how do you judge the category. Would enjoying the story and RPG-aspects of the game make it a good RPG even if it did launch broken?

I mean, apparently it's still pretty broken, which is why I'm still waiting to play it :p

I get what you mean though, and I think that's a fair point that if the RPG aspects are up to snuff, it could deserve a nomination, in spite of the myriad of other problems it could potentially have. If anything though, I think it might just speak to how light the last year has been for RPG's, because I've just looked up a list of them for 2021, and it isn't particularly long!

Yeah playing it on the PC I didn't get as many issues as console players. Wonder how much that factors into it as well.

That would explain why SMTV is there, despite it only being out a week.

No-one can have a proper opinion of a lengthy RPG like that so soon!

The cynic in me thinks it was only picked because Persona 5 made that series (and adjacent ones) popular.

Bravely Default II was robbed in this category.

Bravely Default 2 was ineligible due to the art style alone, unfortunately.

Sadly true. Still got robbed though.

Looks like the TGA GOTY winner just leaked...

lol

Sony obviously got their check cleared early

Eh, looks like a bug, especially considering the voting process isn't concluded I don't think? It's still hilarious either way though

I enjoyed Rift Apart much more than R&C 2016, and besides having only played half of It Takes Two, I can't really comment on the others. I'd be very surprised if Rift Apart won though, I just don't think the energy or excitement is really there for it to win GOTY (I think most are still in shock that Returnal wasn't nominated - don't worry @drahkon, my copy arrived today, so I'll probably be playing that after Pokémon! :p), not to mention most won't have played the game anyways seeing as PS5 stock shortages are still a thing, so I don't think the votes would be there anyways. That's not to say I didn't have fun with it, but...GOTY? I'm not sure.

From the outside looking in, based on industry buzz (so, not at all what the general audience is going to vote for), I imagine it would be between Psychonauts 2, It Takes Two, and Metroid Dread. Deathloop winning would be great for Arkane, but that game just seemed to be forgotten so quickly, and almost everyone I've listened to or watched talk about Resident Evil Village over the last year doesn't think it deserves to be on this list. That being said, it's probably sold the most copies of the lot, so I have no idea ::shrug:

I never was. :p
Clearly Returnal is the GOTY, but given its genre, there was no chance for a nomination ::shrug:

I would laugh so hard if Ratchet ends up winning. I still can't believe it got nominated.

A roguelike, third person shooter/adventure game? The latter two types of games are constantly getting nominated and just last year Hades got a nomination, so yeah.

Forza Horizon 5, the best reviewed game of the year you could say didn't get a nom because of it's genre. Not Returnal.

Forza Horizon 5 didn't get nominated because the date for the full game of the year category ended earlier than the other categories.

It doesn't deserve a nomination in the slightest, anyway, it's just a decent game, nothing more, with some pretty horrible progression because of "live service" nonsense (personally, I don't think "live service" games should be eligible for awards until after a year anyway, as it needs to show how it's handling that element of the game).

Fair enough on why it didn’t get nom’d, I hadn’t realised that.

Putting aside personal opinions on the game for a second though, it’s the best reviewed game of the year by far. All the nominees are at 84-88 on MC, Forza is 92. I suppose it’ll be up for next year’s awards.
