Who are you?

Recommended Posts

As part of our efforts to crank up the activity here on the forum I thought it might be a good idea to get to know each other a little. I think we have an idea of each other’s forum personalities but what about real life?

This is partially inspired by a very old thread we had, almost to the day, ten years ago. My previous reply is in the spoiler.

Wow, reading that 10 year old thread was a blast from the past - so many old members who don't post anymore.

For whatever reason I didn't post in that one though, so i can't re-post my answer.

However, currently:

  • My forum name is bob, but that isn't my real name. I took it from this Blackadder episode.
  • I am 33 years old.
  • I am 5 years married, and live in the West Midlands
  • Wife is currently 5 months pregnant
  • We both went to Warwick University, where we met
  • I have a degree in Engineering, and a PhD in fluid dynamics
  • I now work for an engineering consultancy who specialise in automotive suspension design
  • I do not like cars
  • I recently became a vegetarian
  • My main hobby is travel, but have been unable to do so recently (for obvious reasons) and will probably be unable to do so in future (for reasons listed above)
  • I have two guinea pigs - a fat one, and a long one

Doesn’t look like I posted in that original thread either.

  • I’m Phil
  • I’m 35 years old
  • I’m still single and so very lonely
  • Didn't carry on to Uni after college as I couldn’t decide what I wanted to do
  • I currently (when not furloughed) work at a private school managing their various databases and providing IT support mainly to the admin team
  • I live in a tiny village in the Midlands and would love to move to a city if I could afford it.....which I can’t
  • I don’t game as much as I used to but still enjoy it from time to time
  • I have 1 sister and 2 half brothers (who I haven’t spoken to in years)
  • I support Liverpool FC and we finally just won the Premiership so it finally was “our year!” :p
  • Still enjoy a lot of the geekier hobbies, just don’t have as much time for them these days I guess

- 33 years old

- Born in a small town in the Midlands that I loathe and moved out of at 18

- Ultimately ended up in London in 2010 and spent nearly 10 years there

- Have lived with one forum member, almost ended up living with another too

- Still haven't quite figured out what I want to do but I spent 7 years (minus a 'sabbatical' - left and came back - year) at one place and by the end I was very happy to leave

- Left said job in December and in January and February I went to Poland, Greece and Spain while couch surfing at friends' betwixt

- On March 1st I went on a year long trip around the world. I started in Brazil then went to Argentina and had to come back after just under 3 weeks

- Held onto the false hope I may be able to go again at some point but that's not going to happen this year so ended up renting a place in Birmingham for the next few months and just waiting for the world to right itself. If it goes on for too long I'll move back to London

- Ultimately plan on leaving the UK permanently, just haven't figured out where yet

- Currently doing some consultancy work in the same field as I was working in and obviously I am grateful for it but I would very much like a break right now. Still slightly mardy that I shouldn't be doing this right now (but aware others have it far worse)

- Trying to learn Italian (for a few years but let it slide recently) and Spanish

I left primary school a few days after the original thread was posted. That's probably going to keep me up at night

  • My name is Julian
  • As you might be able to tell by this point, usernames aren't my forte. Unless they involve puns. Then maybe.
  • I'm 21 years old
  • I am half English, half Filipino. It's very interesting having ginger hairs thrown in with the black and dark brown hair I have (like natural highlights), and then being confused with every other race under the sun (it ranges from me being 100% English, to Hispanic, to LITERALLY ANY TYPE OF ASIAN). I love it.
  • My birthday is on Christmas Eve (cue all of the other kids telling me I get less for Christmas :D)
  • Like @will' (talk about a small world!) I'm from Stourbridge, and have lived here for 21 of my 21.5 years on this big hunk of rock. I think it'ss actually a really good place to live if you're starting to raise a young family, or are anywhere up to the age of 18, but I am neither of those...so I can't wait to get out of this town :p
  • The six months that I didn't live in Stourbridge I spent living in Plumpton in Sydney, Australia, for the first half of 2007, as my mom had work lined up as a social worker over there (they had processed all of the paperwork and such beforehand, just needed her there to confirm the job), but that didn't work out (yeah, they refused to give her the role they lined up for her). Young me completely misunderstood at the time and had been telling people I would only be gone a year at most, but guess I got the last laugh there. Believe it or not our local ice cream vendor was from Brierley Hill! It was great, so many fond memories and so many friends made over there. We were enrolled for four months or so at a Christian school while there, which had the most diverse range of students I've ever seen; in my class in particular, we had one white Australian, whose best friend was an Aboriginal Australian, plenty of mixed Filipinos, and a number of other Asian races too. I encountered zero racism while there, it was so weird for once not being the odd one out, and everyone of all ages were so welcoming. Genuinely the happiest I think I was as a child, maybe ever. Also learned how to play handball - what I would describe as a weird street version of tennis which you play with your hands - and got really good at it. Great times. That was long-winded, whoops!
  • I work as a Financial Advisor for those facing financial difficulty at one of the bigger banks, and have done since last year. It's tough, but can be very rewarding. It's just a way for me to make money at the moment and help people as...
  • ...I haven't gone to university, but I fully intend to. Had a rough few years since leaving high school in every aspect of my life imaginable, but (very) slowly, I'm starting to get the feeling that things will be okay. Hardest challenge I'm facing right now is picking between two things I'm very passionate about to turn into a career path, and then working towards taking that up at university. Which means I have a lot of free time on my hands right now, even though I'm working.
  • Like many here, I love travelling. Last trip was a solo trip to Edinburgh back in December for my 21st. I travelled over much of Europe with my family growing up because my mom pushed this hard, at least one new country a year, which I'm very grateful for, and has instilled me with a love for finding about other cultures and places. I feel like that bleeds through into me just liking to learn more about others in general.
  • I've been quiet and shy much of my life, though after putting on a little muscle before leaving high school and dealing with quite a lot of drama and nonsense, I've become pretty indifferent to how people see me, for better or worse. Would definitely say I'm introverted though, considering one day in a social situation might leave me needing to recharge for a few days. After everything I've gone through and my academic woes compared with where I used to be, it's still odd that my friends from high school introduce me to strangers as "the smart one/genius/smartest guy I've met". Its nice that they still have that confidence and trust in me, but I wish they'd accept my shortcomings, and just introduce me as I am now. Or at least let people make up their own mind, because it puts a lot of pressure on me!
  • Single since the day I was born, and thank goodness, because I used to be a hopeless romantic (thanks western TV!). Those potential relationships really would not have worked out well, and I recognise that I've still got plenty I want to learn and work on about myself before looking for a relationship. I'm buying more into the "there's someone best suited for where and when you are in life" than "The Mythical One" that I used to think of growing up, which I'm glad about, because I feel like it's going to help me get out of my own head and not put too much pressure on myself and others when I do get into a relationship one day. But I definitely want to get married one day, trusting that I meet the right girl, and have kids. If I don't meet the girl, if I'm in a stable position where I feel I have something to potentially offer as a father, I'm currently of the mindset that I'd still love to adopt.
  • A rack of ribs with whatever it's being served with is my go-to meal, and a  lemonade would be my drink of choice.
  • I didn't drink alcohol at all until last year by choice, where I had a few whiskeys. I don't mind it, but I honestly just don't care for it - or more importantly the atmosphere which normally surrounds it - so I'm back to being a teetotaler. I'd love to say something profound, or that maybe it was for family reasons, but honestly it's just because I have little interest in it. I've had some great nights out not drinking, why would that night be any different? Also, I can confirm that there is little more annoying than people trying to force alcohol on you or asking your reason for not drinking for the fiftieth time.
  • In terms of sports, football has been the big one that's followed me throughout most of my life. I'm a Chelsea supporter, honestly based on the fact that the first game I watched was the highlights of a Liverpool v. Chelsea match on Match of the Day on a Sunday morning, and I remember really enjoying watching them play. Favourite colour at the time was blue, so it only made sense. Think I was four or five at the time? Gone through periods where I've got interested in swimming, F1, tennis, and basketball too (played for my high school basketball team), and though I don't keep up to date with all of them, it's nice to have a good enough understanding of a number of sports to be able to talk about them at length.
  • Didn't grow up with games as much as most others here, but it's been a great crutch over the last 5 years. Also love storytelling in any medium: film, TV, books, comics/manga, et al. A good story is a good story to me, that's all I care about, and storytelling fascinates me. Had a very deep love for Star Wars growing up (wrote a treatment for Episode VII back when I was in Year 4! Half tempted to write one for Episode IX in hindsight...) which has stuck with me to this day, and Pokémon of course has been a massive part of my life too. Toy Story was the film for me before I could speak, apparently I'd slot that VHS in time after time long after my parents would fall asleep. Anime has also been a growing interest of mine over the last few years too.

Awesome thread Will, it's been really interesting learning more about everyone else on the forum, and sharing more about myself which I highly doubt would have been shared otherwise.

I agree, this thread is awesome. I'm loving learning about different people and @soag, BIG DISNEY FAN HERE TOO and very jealous you got the official Disney Proposal. If I would ever marry, I would propose (or would only accept a proposal- because y'know, 2020 so why can't women propose, right?) at Disneyland!

Here's a bit about me. I've posted on the other thread but I've changed since then so here it goes:

  • I'm Darren but everybody calls me Dazz (spelt with two Z's), which is the name I prefer.
  • I'm 30.
  • I live in good old Birmingham.
  • Left-wing and I'm passionate but I also believe that everyone is entitled to their own opinions and I'm not disrespectful about it, like with any subject. I believe that the only way forward is through regular, normal discussions without the need to insult anybody but with social media, it's difficult to maintain a decent discussion.
  • I have OCD and I was embarrassed about it but now I'm not. It's not a "germophobe" one (although I don't like germs and Covid has triggered me quite a few times) but it's more the "checking locks and checking stuff" one. I've learned CBT, which is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, and I'm better for it. I have attacks but not as bad as I used to.
  • As many of you may know (or guess...man, I love brackets in this post...) I'm a massive self-confessed Disney geek and own most of the films on blu-ray or DVD including Classics, direct-to-video sequels, Disney Channel movies or pretty much anything with Disney on it. If I can't get it on blu-ray because it's not been released here, I have it on DVD.
  • I also collect blu-rays because I adore films and owning them. People see it as a colossal waste of money but 1. I love physical media and 2. It makes me happy and that's all that matters. I would much rather buy something physically and own it rather than stream it or download it if I intend on keeping it forever. Also, it's just really nice to look at.
  • My favourite animated film is Beauty and the Beast (if you didn't guess) and my favourite films are Shawshank Redemption, Rocky and Titanic.
  • My favourite books to read will forever be Harry Potter. I've read either one or all of them nearly every year.
  • I still love gaming. I currently play Fortnite with my mates and we get a lot of Victory Royales without building because we're shit at it, lmao.
  • I have counted and verified this and officially, I have had 14 jobs and used to be sort of known on here as having them and telling you all the stuff that happened to me at work, good and bad.
  • I have lost copious amounts of weight (gained a bit back on from lockdown admittedly) and I'm currently training to be a Personal Trainer, Gym Instructor and Class Instructor as fitness is a new-found passion of mine and I would love to pursue it as a career.
  • I love to read and I love to write. Ever since I have had my new laptop, I have been writing short stories and I've recently written a short horror story to which an author has said it was brilliant but I need to tidy it up a little so that's quite cool.
  • My dream is to become a father and it's a dream I've had since I was young. People always tell me that I'll change my mind when I'm older but here I am, over 20 years later, still dreaming it.
  • I can drive cars and ride motorbikes. I drive but I don't own a bike yet.
  • I'm single...still. I've been on a few dates but we just didn't click. I could write a book on disastrous dates.

Who is telling you this? Surely for most people it is the other way around - when you are young, you don't want kids, but as you get older you change your mind.

  • Stefan's my name, everybody calls me Radi (thankfully)
  • I'm from Germany
  • was an Air Traffic Controller for a few years but quit due to being incredibly unhappy with that job
  • now I'm 30 year old student (Applied Molecular Biotechnology) with no degree, yet (please don't ask how long I've been a student...)
  • working part time (15 hours per week) to finance living in the city of my university (Aachen), my studies and my biggest hobby: video games
  • I'm into comedy and would love to write something (little stand-up routine, a sketch, a joke) but no inspiration so far
  • been single for a few years; had some chances for relationships but blew 'em 'cause of my commitment issues (thanks for that, ex girlfriend)
  • fun fact: I've watched all Harry Potter movies this year...for the first time in my life
  • I like to get drunk/high, but reduced the frequency of being in that state (now maybe once per month; it was once or twice per week for a while)
  • recently got more into playing the e-guitar I've had for 10 years now (I know a few chords, can play a few songs, but that's it)

I know and I don't know why but I've always wanted to be a father. I know it'd be difficult and stuff but it's just something I've always wanted. As I've got older, the feeling to become a father has been stronger every year to the point I feel jealous...not in a nasty way but I have this feeling in my stomach...like it's something I really want more than anything.

I used to be told I should live my life and that I'd have other dreams where I would want to do stuff but honestly, it's never gone.

Sounds totally weird, I know, but I can't explain it properly.

Oh I don't think you're the weird one. The people who think that the desire to have kids reduces with age are weird!

I don't want kids. I haven't thought about it until I was like 25 but I can say with 100% certainty that I do not want to be a father.
My dad died in 2009 (when I was 19) and I still occasionally struggle with it. It's the biggest reason why I don't want kids: The possibility that I could die and my child feels the way I felt when I lost my father.

Edit: It always sounds weird to me when I say it out loud (or in this case write it down).

Who I am now:

  • My name is Jim. My real name is actually Jamal, but I've been called Jim since I was about 6 and it's followed me around everywhere. All through school, my friends (even non-friends) would call me that, and it was the same at uni and now at work.
  • 33 years old. Originally from Newport in South Wales, but have been living in Bournemouth for 10 years.
  • Brought up by my grandparents, but called them mum and dad. Mum is from Manchester and Dad is from Pakistan, so I have an all year round tan. Often get mistaken for being Spanish, Italian, Mexican, Portugese. Anything but Welsh.
  • Engaged to @Eenuh and we're due to get married next year.
  • I'm currently in charge of the Junior School part of our school (Junior School Leader/Head of Junior School) and also teach Year 6. It's a very time consuming job but I do love it.
  • Big fan of music. I'm a self taught drummer, bassist and guitarist. Trying to learn a bit of keyboard too and am getting better with the theory side of music. Plan this year is to start making my own stuff, which I'm super keen on doing.
  • I have tons of interest in languages. I know Dutch/Flemish now due to Eenuh, but also speak Spanish and am currently learning Italian and re-learning French. I find languages interesting. I did start doing some Japanese a while back, but couldn't commit to it due to having too many other things to do.
  • Spent 4 years in Brighton where I studied/trained to be a teacher.
  • Huge Manchester United fan due to mum being from Manchester. Most mates in school were either Liverpool or Arsenal supporters, or were more into rugby. I aim to watch/follow every game.
  • Quite into my fitness, too. We converted the garage into a home gym, so I exercise about 4 or 5 days a week. Sometimes this can fluctuate depending on how busy work is. I find lifting weights very fun and spend most of my time doing this, with bits of cardio mixed in.
  • I have a few too many hobbies and it's difficult to balance everything!
  • My biggest fears are rats and karaoke.
  • Thanks 1

What a great topic! It's nice to get to know more about all of you! :)

Who I am:

  • My name is Ine, my forum name is how English people might try and pronounce my name (but then still fail).
  • I am 35 years old.
  • I'm from Belgium but have been living in the UK since 2012.
  • I moved to the UK to live with @Fierce_LiNk, who I met through this forum! The first time we met in real life (and also our very first date) was in Disneyland Paris! We've been together since 2008, being in a long-distance relationship until I moved in 2012. Been engaged since 2015, finally (hopefully) getting married in 2021! :D
  • I really want to visit Disneyworld someday, hopefully as our honeymoon in the future!
  • I have a Master degree in Illustration.
  • I am the only employee of a company which makes whiteboard animations. This means I do most of the work, including storyboarding, drawing up the images, making the video. My boss (or the client) does the script and we get other people to do voice-overs.
  • I have been working from home for a few years now, so this lockdown stuff is my usual routine haha.
  • Recently, I have really got into gardening and growing my own vegetables (see the New-found Hobbies thread)!
  • I love chocolate, pizza and pasta.
  • I love travelling but don't really get to do it enough. We went to Italy a few years ago (Milan, Florence & Rome) and we loved it. We've been dying to go back!
  • Despite being 35, I still love playing games, even though it's not as much as I used to.
  • We have two rescue cats, Aya and Ico. They are our babies!

  • I'm Luke.
  • Just turned 35 years old.
  • I live with my partner, with our pet dog and tortoise.
  • I bought my house in Warwickshire about 5 years ago.
  • I'm originally from Oxfordshire, so haven't moved far.
  • I did well in school, but didn't know what I wanted to do when I left, so I basically bumbled my way around until I got into Photography and Graphic Design. I now work from home as a Graphic Designer for a fairly decent training company.
  • I spend most of my spare time either gaming, doing something with cars, taking photos (using either a DSLR or drone) or playing Dungeons and Dragons.
  • I love cars and currently have 3 (A fast one, a practical one and a retro one). It's very rare that all of them work at the same time.
  • One car is an estate, which I'm currently kitting out to be a sort of camper van. Basically a rolling tent that I can take places and sleep comfortably in overnight. I want to use it to travel more on the cheap.
  • I used to be quite good at long distance cycling, then I took a break for about 8 years and put on a bunch of weight. Now I'm rebuilding my fitness and hoping to lose some weight and get back to my former distances. With the combination of exercise and diet, I've lost 2 stone in about 3 months.
  • Went vegetarian just under a year ago, mainly for ethical reasons (although I don't preach to others and I'm not a fan of those who do).
  • I collect retro games, with a focus on Sega Saturn games in particular.

It was the most perfect proposal!! I almost died!!

Pic of the moment, I look like a fool but I was in shock!!!!

This is great, good to get to know you all. I’m quite surprised by how many people are in and around the midlands. Maybe we should have Christmas drinks in Birmingham.

  • I now work for an engineering consultancy who specialise in automotive suspension design
  • I do not like cars

This must be interesting. Is it just a general non-interest or an actual dislike?

After years of living in a depresed mood, I try to have a postivie outlook on life and always greet people with a smile.

That’s great, was there anything in particular that triggered the change?

Wow! What part of town are you from? Where did you go to school? What do you think about the Tesco?!?!

My dream is to become a father and it's a dream I've had since I was young. People always tell me that I'll change my mind when I'm older but here I am, over 20 years later, still dreaming it.

I thought people usually do this the other way round? People not wanting to be Father’s and being told they’ll want it later. Either way, it’s a great experience!

I think not wanting kids is fine, but for the right reasons. If you really want kids but don’t do it out of fear of how they’ll feel when you die then you’re missing out. If it’s for other reasons then it’s totally understandable.

I know you talk about the cars a fair bit so sorry for not remembering this - what are the three cars your currently have? Driving is one of the things I really miss and really hope I’ll be able to have a car at some point in the future.

I cut down my retro collecting and now only buy GameCube and Saturn. Love exploring the shops in Japan for anything new whenever I’m there. As the console was quite popular there the prices aren’t as ridiculous as they are in the west. Panzer Dragoon Saga usually 20 quid or so for example.

Do you have a favorite thing in your collection?

Goodness its been a while, I'm really glad to hear how you're all getting on. @drahkon thats not a weird reason you lovely person, its perfectly fine whatever you choose to do!

Me then?

- My name is Steph
- I'm now 30 years old!
- I live with my partner, we've been together 6 and a half years. We're due to marry sometime this year (fingers crossed)
- No kids or animals in our household. I can't have children, but we hope to have a couple of cats soon. :D
- I currently have about 30 houseplants? I'm currently looking for a rare one from the US/Asia.
- I now weight lift and love going to the gym 3-4 times a week (older forum me would have found this crazy).
- I work for a billion dollar company testing software for a living. We now get to WFH permanently - woo!
- I have a fair whack of health problems that have been laying "undiscovered" since I was about 14. But we're on the road to sorting that all out. It does mean a fun 7 inch scar to show people, I usually said I had a fight with a shark and lost.

:bouncy:
