Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart (11th June 2021)

Recommended Posts

I forgot about that, I was a bit confused when I collected the last gold bolt and no trophy popped. I thought it must have glitched.

Got the Plat last night.
Found a MUCH easier way to get that last Trophy.
For anyone going for the plat, my advice is to buy and use the Void Repulser as soon as possible in your original play through.
Get it up to LV 5, and then it’ll become the Void Reactor.

Once you have that, don’t bother with the bronze challenges as there’s a much easier way! See video below. I did this for 5 min and it popped. There is a Ms Zurkon right next to the area so you can keep running back and refilling your ammo which depletes rapidly when using the shield.
:)

Thanks for the tip, I just got the void reactor so will level it up.

With the frequency trophies kept popping I figured it would be a pretty easy plat tbh!

Hopefully no trophy tied to levelling up all weapons cause some of them are a bit rubbish for my play style

Finished up the main story last night, totally loved the game and for me it was pretty much the ideal length. Wasn’t as keen on the sub-levels but they were still OK I suppose. Still blown away by the look and feel of it, the production values are really top notch - Insomniac are at the top of their game with stuff like that. Only real complaint would be that there were quite a few invisible walls which broke me out of the experience a little, nothing too major though.

The use of the controller is also pretty fantastic. When utilized properly I do think that the Dual Sense is a bit of a game changer. Can’t wait to play more proper PS5 games with the haptics and adaptive triggers really taken advantage of.

Got about 50% of the trophies and will work through to the Platinum. Trying to make that a regular thing with PS5 games.

Yeah no level up trophies other than getting one item up to lv 5. Which will happen fairly quickly. Really nice trophy list. Nothing too grindy whereas it would have been so easy for them to add some in to get ALL weapons up to level 5 or something.
The only negative of this trophy list is it not adding much more game length. The best trophies IMO make you look at the game again in a different way, or add length with fun trophies. These were just a bit run of the mill. Fun though, nonetheless!

I'm starting to remember why the PS4 game didn't really stick with me, the gameplay here is incredibly repetitive and one-note.

I'm still really enjoying it and obviously the visuals and presentation are incredible, but I feel like I'm just doing the same thing on every planet. All the gameplay concepts like the crystals that swap dimensions, that should be a mechanic they build that whole planet's puzzles around, but no, it's as linear as you can get and they barely do anything with it.

Don't want to sound too down on it cause it's still loads of fun, but yeah...

I get what you mean.
For me, it varied the gameplay up enough. Like the scuttlebug sections, the bigger planets that had you skating around and finding the lorb / orb things. And then the gravity planet etc.

There was just enough variety but that’s where my complaint about the game starting to outstay it’s welcome came in. A little too repetitive in terms of combat. And not enough interesting weapons this time around for me. They all felt like they did the same thing.

I think they could have done more differentiating between Ratchet and Rivet too. Both had the same weapon set, move set, everything.

What you’re saying though has been my biggest problem with the last couple of Sony exclusives I’ve played. All the same. Spider-Man. Combat bad guys, new area, combat bad guys. Move on to new area. Combat bad guys. Rinse and repeat.
The Last of Us. Basically the same game as the first only one million times longer, infinitely more boring with the same gameplay from the original game. Only strung out over two “campaigns” with different people.

There is still enjoyment to be had with them, but I do find them a bit copy and paste and same can be said for R&C to a degree. I loved this game though overall! If it were two hours longer I’d be saying the same.

First party Sony games have definitely become copy and paste, that's for sure. They've a one note formula and they stick to it, for better or worse.

Rift Apart is tons of fun but I think my criticism came after 100%-ing the mining planet, where I tried to think back to what I actually did in that previous hour or so, and I couldn't think of much that hasn't happened on any other planet to that point, apart from the crystals that they could have taken so much further (think the time stones in Skyward Sword for instance).

Probably best to look at this game like a summer blockbuster or Marvel film, you go in for the flashy visuals and cool action.

100% this, I've been thinking the same, think it would've helped to keep things fresh too. I also found it weird that unlocking an item as Ratchet you'd automatically get the same weapon as Rivet, and vice versa. It's even weirder if you consider that you can only (re-)visit certain planets as each character, you'd think that would've been down to them having unique mechanics rather than "uh, I guess they won't go here?". Especially after things open up too!

Rivet even has a bionic arm -- how do you not do something unique with that?!

Yes completely. Such a missed opportunity. Didn’t think about her bionic arm and what that could have opened up, game play wise.
I feel like I’m hating on the game. But couldn’t be more opposite. I loved it overall. Just think there were a couple of missed opportunities.

Made my way through and got the platinum last night. I kind of agree that there were a lot of missed opportunities both with what the trophies were awarded for and the lack of additional stuff within the game. As a linear story experience I still think it’s up there with the best, but it’s missing that something special that makes it stand out from the rest.

Really enjoyed my play through and glad I’ve got the platinum before F1 launches later this month. The PS5 really has been great for me so far, glad I jumped in on day one.

Platinum'd the game just now. Overall I thought it was great, even if it plays things incredibly safe (even by Sony first party standards). Still, quite an accomplishment from Insomniac to have this and Miles Morales release so close together. That said, much as I had fun I was quite keen to be done with it in the latter half. Like the PS4 game it's one I'll forget about pretty quickly, though this was definitely a step up from that game, at least in the story-telling.

As fun as the shooting gameplay is I'm disappointed there just wasn't more to the game than that. Barely any platforming, no puzzles, no exploration, only a tiny handful of sidequests. The changing dimensions looked hugely impressive but ultimately added very little. I expected the Pocket Dimensions to be more than they ended up being, very very short and simple, and frankly a bit pointless. The whole game just got really repetitive and one-note pretty quickly. Most worlds play out exactly the same, just run along a linear path and shoot stuff every few minutes. Some levels mercifully offered something a bit different, the one where you alternate dimensions and hide from that creature, that one was a standout for sure.

The actual gun play was a lot of fun and the various weapons were enjoyable to use, levelling up the Enforcer to level 5 and holding the trigger as it shot out electric-like fire 4 times was brilliantly done. Set dressing wise the game is full of lots of tiny details that really elevate it, shame about all the invisible walls though.

Visually it obviously looked stunning, some areas more than others. I went back and used an unlockable weapon (you'll know it if you're aiming for the platinum) on the very first parade level and the game just crashed, probably under extreme graphical pressure! Actually there were a surprising amount of bugs. As above, one important cutscene 2/3rd though didn't even play.

8/10 for me. Really fun and enjoyable in a beautifully polished package, I just wish there was a bit more variety to the gameplay.

Oh and the 'Glitch' sections were offensively bad. Made all the worse by what is easily the most annoying voice acting in video games since "Excuuuuuuse me Princess". I have no idea what they were thinking!! That voice and the arena/weapon announcer, my god :blank:

Coming to PC on 26th July 2023 courtesy of an Insomniac and Nixxes collaboration:

Great get for PC, had a lot of fun with this and still one of the few titles to really feel next-gen for me so far.

Nixxes? Should be a good port then.

Honestly.  Sony should probably just let them handle every in-house PC port from here on.  After the disasters that were Returnal and TLOU Part 1? Just leave it to their own PC port specialists, staff them up if necessary, and let their other internal studios just focus on the console versions.

For those that have played the game.  I’ve never played a Ratchet & Clank game before, but I have both the PS4 Ratchet & Clank remake (via the PS+ free game a while back) and Rifts Apart.  Would you recommend playing the original before Rifts Apart?

That’s what I was planning to do, but it would be useful to get your opinions?  Thanks!

Having played the 2016 remake for the first time just a month before Rift Apart's launch, I don't think it's essential to play the remake at all, though it might make you a little familiar with any returning faces.

However, I would recommend playing it before Rift Apart if you ever plan on playing it, because I think Rift Apart is a step up in almost every way, and so I imagine it could be difficult to go back to the 2016 remake after playing Rift Apart, which I think feels tighter, has mechanics that are much more fleshed out, and also just looks better (not that the 2016 game looks bad, by any stretch of the imagination!). Fwiw, I had a blast with Rift Apart despite not having the greatest time with the 2016 remake!

Look forward to hearing your R&C thoughts whatever you decide :peace:
