Gotta Get Thru This

Recommended Posts

Most of us are under some kind of lockdown so what media, activities, hobbies etc are you using to help you get through this? Thought it might be a way for people to find new things to try but focus on the fun stuff away from the reason.

I'm rewatching Jane the Virgin because it's knowingly silly, fun and lighthearted (although does get to the emotions sometimes and there's a storyline in season 4 that really cuts too close to home for me but I've still got some time yet). The use of the narrator (officially known as "Latin Lover Narrator") and on-screen visuals/gags works really well too and I tried to find a video that sums it up pretty well but couldn't.

Finally begun Elite season 3 too which I once saw described as "sexy murder school" and that's all I really need right now.

If anyone has any podcast recommendations I'd be interested as I always seem to struggle to find new ones. I like My Dad Wrote a PornoStuff You Should Know and the Brooklyn Nine-Nine/Good Place official podcasts and then do random episodes from random shows based on the subjects.

I am likely to pick up Animal Crossing soon, just waiting for some confirmation that I'll get work coming in soon, but it seems like a popular distraction right now. But in the meantime I picked up Pikuniku and Snake Pass in the sale and the former was silly and fun but I've not tried the latter yet. Still got Pokémon Sword which I've barely played.

And as mentioned in the languages thread I'm giving Spanish a go (as I was supposed to be in South America right now...).

My Brother, My Brother and Me - A comedy advice show where they take Yahoo! Answers questions and answer them. It's probably my favourite podcast and reminds me a bit of MDWaP, in that a lot of time is just spent laughing at ridiculous situations, albeit not as sexual as MDWaP. They've just hit 500 episodes, so there's plenty to listen to if you end up liking it.

The Adventure Zone - The same people as MBMBaM (plus their dad), but they're playing D&D. Same sort of humour, but with the structure of a story/campaign. Pretty funny at times, but gets surprisingly serious/emotional at times, especially as they get more comfortable with D&D.

FRUK Unwrapped - @ReZourceman would probably not forgive me if I didn't plug this one. I thought it would be weird listening to a friend doing a podcast, especially as food isn't really a topic I'd be interested in listening to, but the 3 hosts (ReZ, Nate and Stuart) are bloody gold at times. Like, I've been in tears of laughter listening to it on multiple occasions. Plus, I've been on it (Episode 44 for those interested), so I'd say that was a huge bonus.

The Adam Buxton Podcast - It's basically just Adam Buxton chatting to his celebrity mates (such as Louis Theroux, Simon Pegg, Billy Connolly, Chris Morris etc), so will hinge on if you like Adam Buxton or not really. Although I wouldn't say it was a comedy podcast, it's a good mixture of humour and interesting topics. I tend to give it a listen every time there's a guest I'm interested in and skip the rest.

As for me, I've got quite the backlog of games to play. Currently FF8 Remaster, Division 2, Shadow of Mordor and Dragon's Dogma, plus FF7 Remake when it comes out/if it gets delivered. I've also taken up D&D, so I've got a Skype session of that planned for early April.

The dog also helps keep me sane, as he needs walking twice a day. I try to limit it to the space out the back of our house, but if I feel like a bit of a longer walk, I'll take him to the park (avoiding other people, obviously). I'm trying to think if I could take my drone with me, but I'm fairly sure that's against the rules. Unfortunately, my house is too close to the neighbours to take off from within my property and I think hanging around outside whilst flying it would be a bit of a stretch to class it as my daily exercise. In terms of keeping my distance from people, I would have no problem as the area round my house is basically empty countryside. When I walk the dog, I almost never see anyone else, but the rules are the rules I suppose.

You saying about a friend having a podcast could be weird has reminded me a hook-up from months ago has one. Maybe I'll check that out!

Oh and I have no idea who Adam Buxton is.

He's one of those celebrities that has kind of done everything and knows everyone in the industry, but hasn't really made it big in anything. You'll probably have seen/heard him in something at some point.

When I think of Adam and Joe I always remember Adam's Baaddad or the Star Wars stuff they did plus this sketch for some reason -

I've got a backlog of DVD's and games to go through but when this does blow over I will be getting a Switch (finances allowing). Also I'm trying to resurrect my Japanese skills and go on Wii Fit/U again.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is proving to be a great distraction from everything going on, it's just such a fun and chilled time. I'm purposely limiting myself to an hour or two a day to get into the habit of shorter sessions with the game, and it's proving a treat so far.  I also want to do that so it doesn't distract me from my "main game", which at the moment is my first playthrough of Final Fantasy VI. Which I'm loving. Keep catching myself humming the themes walking around the house!

Kind of in the mood for a film today, not really sure which one yet though :p also been watching That 70's Show between install sessions and when eating in Netflix, which is a fun little way to pass the time.

Haven't watched an anime since December (which was K-On!!), mainly due to a heavy binge on HxH 2011 whilst balancing that with a full-time job...got through that in three weeks back in November/December, after rewatching some of my favourites (FMA:B, Steins;Gate) and watching stuff like Haikyuu, which is also a great time. HxH was heavy and long, so I'm not too surprised that I haven't got back to anime yet, but I feel myself slowly starting to want to get back into it. So we'll see what happens there.

Also figuring out what I want to watch on Disney+ besides showing my family The Mandalorian. Started adding films and shows to my list from my childhood, or things that I wanted to watch, and it's growing at a steady rate. Debating just running through The Clone Wars in its entirety for the fourth time, but I might just wait until the summer for that.

Played Monopoly with my family last night, which was fun - we haven't played a board game in years, but I reminded them why we at least stopped playing Monopoly. That involved me ending the game with £9K :p

Been running (grateful for us having a big garden!) and doing home exercises for health, and got a book I'm starting to chip away at too. Got the good news that our noisy neighbours (I'm talking screaming child in the waning hours, revving and working on their motorbike until after 22:00 in their garden, etc.) are thinking of moving out soon too. Not normally one to hold grudges, but they've definitely hurt my sleep patterns over the last few years, and despite politely asking them to keep it quieter late at night (i.e. by, you know, not working on their motorbike at stupid o'clock?), the tipping point was when they got into a fight with some family friends/neighbours in their front garden and started saying some horrible things, which I unfortunately overheard (you know, when they were working on their motorbike). I wish them good health and hope they improve, because they just completely lack respect for those around them - they're a young family with a lot to learn.

Most importantly, what I find is helping me get through this is just not paying attention to it; I'm avoiding the dedicated thread, only checking the news for it once or twice a day (mainly for the uplifting stuff, like Italy turning it around), and just keeping my mind busy with all of the above. Work was stressful before all of this, but their handling of the situation was embarrassing, so it's nice to be out of the office for a little while.

Going to start typing up my Gaming Diary entries to catch up on last month soon too, which I'm looking forward to!

I've played up until FFX at this point and VI still has my favourite world map theme. It's beautiful.

I'm doing the same thing, An hour or so in Animal Crossing to do what needs to be done and then playing Pokémon Mystery Dungeon. I've also started playing through Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. I saw this cool retrospective on the trilogy and it made me want to play it again. (I played through the first two recently)

Those controls are still great. If a Switch version comes out without motion controls, I legit won't buy it. (I'm looking at you, Resident Evil 4 Switch)

Just decided to get back on an absolute masterpiece on Netflix and recommend a huge binge to all whilst in isolation.

Baz Luhrmann's The Get Down. Smooth ass shit.

I started watching that when it came out but it was one of those Netflix shows where they decide to make the first episode about two weeks long and I just couldn't.

Been spending a fair bit of time in the garden, really fortunate to have that luxury. Been listening to Pearl Jam’s new album, playing Animal Crossing, watching Better Call Saul and will soon make a start on the new seasons of Ozark and Westworld. Finally bought a new PS4 controller the other day as mine had a faulty D-pad so I may make a start on God of War soon. I bought it a while ago but soon realised it was unplayable without a working controller. Been chipping away at a few Game Pass games on Xbox, mainly Ori and the Will of the Wisps which is a superb game, but it’s buggy as fuck, unplayable at times.

But this has been my week of annual leave so I’d likely be doing these things anyway. I go back to work on Sunday seeing as I’m seen as a key worker. I’m strangely looking forward to a change of scenery, though I’ll be careful to wipe down what I’m about to touch.

So it's been a few days but I'm already near halfway through my Level 3 Personal Trainer course. If I was still at work and I had the gym, I wouldn't have even got passed the first module. Now I'm on the third one out of six (there's eight altogether but they're greyed out and I can't access them at the moment).

I've watched all of Torchwood. I bloody miss that show. It was so good. Miracle Day ended it on a good cliffhanger. It's a shame it got cancelled. Jack Harkness was a good character in Doctor Who. I also watched all of Death Note. Loved it a lot. I think it's something stupid like my eighth time watching it.

I watched all of the Resident Evils recently. The movies are so dumb and got ridiculous with every sequel but I'll be damned, it's so much fun. It's like Fast and Furious to me- they're stupid, unrealistic and goes against everything but it knows how to be fun.

At the minute, I'm reading my Kindle and watching a lot of my blu-rays.

I've decided to re watch a short film I was in over and over and over...

Anyway if you're a touch bored, a 6 minute film I was in (filmed two years ago) was accepted to a London and Oxford Festival before all this stuff kicked off, if you fancy a watch of this horror masterpiece "Stakeout" then...

My feelings throughout this period can be summed up by this image:

536.jpg

Basically my job allows me to work from home, and its been working very well. Thing is, all i read about on here and elsewhere online are all the people who are stuck at home with loads of time to play video games, while i still have basically the same amount of free time i always had...

I realise i shouldn't complain, because i am extremely lucky to still have a job, but it's kind of frustrating - i want to buy Animal Crossing damnit!

We're quite fortunate, as we have this within walking distance of our house, which we've been using as our daily exercise.

It's about 20 minutes each way, which leaves us 20 minutes to have a walk around. Normally the place is really busy, but we pretty much have the place to ourselves now that people aren't allowed to drive places.

The Dog House on Channel 4/4OD/All4. Watch it last though, not enough episodes and almost too emotionals. Basically First Dates but if the first date was you adopting a puppy.

Friday Night Dinner on Channel 4/4OD/All4. Great family style laughs(not as an audience per se i mean i am watching this and laughing at YOUR family you ridiculous fools!). Probably watch it first.

Little bit of the good old The Windsors. its on Channel4/4OD/All4. Watch it whenever you need to just fill the gap.
