Playstation 5 Console Discussion

Out of curiosity, what's turning you off of the new consoles? I've seen you mention in the PC thread you were looking to potentially dive in, and especially if simulation games like the F1 games are more your thing, it does feel like that might be where the better experience ends up being for the foreseeable future.

Series X is quite simple, no games so why bother? With PS5 I’m not sure I really want any of the launch games, they do look great but not my usual thing. I do love the stuff Sony’s studios put out but generally I don’t play them so do I really need the PS5? Then there’s the weaker reason of the fact that I find the PS5 so ugly I just don’t want it in my house, stupid I know but when the console is going to be on display for at least the next 5 years you do have to somewhat like the way it looks.

I do love getting a launch day console, but more and more I feel like I’d be buying a PS5 just because it’s new and exciting, not because I actually want to use it.

Games will come on Playstaion. That moment will vary for each person but it’s looking good.

For me it’s more about the new console experience on launch day. Sony are bringing good stuff to the table. No big mistakes like their competition.

Missed this so sorry for the late reply. Trusted I would say are the usual like Samsung, Sony, LG etc (but those are the standouts imo) though they tend to specialise their tv's in certain tech to differentiate themselves e.g. if you want an OLED, you gotta go LG. One thing is that I would watch and read up on this stuff because there are so many competing technologies like LED, QLED and OLED but the information between them could lead you to think they are the same (QLED and OLED) when the gulf in benefits is considerable (LED/LCD and OLED).

Personally, I go with OLED all the time. Once you have seen a proper one, you cannot go back.

It’s basically just OLED v LCD (LED, QLED, QCRAP, LCRAP etc.)

If you are after best picture it’s one thing. Gaming features are another. Gaming oriented tv like the LG OLED focus on the lowest lag and 4K 120hz (if a game comes along). You still have to handle burn in. But for pure gaming and lag it’s probably the top choice.

Best picture are like the HZ2000 Panasonic. You don’t have to set/calibrate  anything picture settings wise. More resistant to burn in due to to stronger cooling. Best in class HDR and better motion than everyone minus Sony OLED. Price is higher though.

Samsung’s QLED are mostly not great (overlap with OLED prices) and they have their own OLED coming called QDOLED. So they don’t care I guess. But they have their place as they are much brighter than OLED. So great for sunny rooms etc. Won’t burn in. Have backlit and zonal control for deeper blacks etc like the Sony below. These tv are slowly going the way of the dodo.

Sony have tv like XH90 and XH95 which are unique. Essentially priced under their OLED range. XH95 is picture accurate out of the box and XH90 is gaming and Center viewing focused. XH95 gets very bright and has great angles. Accuracy is highly praised vs Samsung. Motion and processing are best in class. You can get these sets in big sizes easily and cheaply somewhat. Like Samsung these sets cost too much to make vs OLED.

Well that sucks, have they mentioned when they might be able to fulfill it by? Was always worried this might end up being the case; out of curiosity, did you register interest prior to then going up, or register interest/order it after?

I registered interest then pre-ordered. I few weeks later they sent me an e-mail asking me to confirm my pre-order which I did.

Then yesterday I get an e-mail saying:

We have received the allocation details from Sony and, unfortunately, we regret to inform you that we will not be able to fulfil your pre-order on day one/release date.

But we value your custom and we would like to ask you to keep your pre-order with us.

What could happen next:

  • Sony may notify us of additional stock with extra allocation for day one and you have already reserved your place in the queue;
  • Some customers may cancel their pre-orders and that may allow yours to be next in line.

Also we would like to know if you would be happy to swap your pre-order for a digital console, if they become available and as you are in the queue, you will have the priority (please let us know on our website Live chat/messenger contact channel).

We apologise for this unfortunate news.

I guess they're selling to the first guys that pre-ordered or confirmed their pre-order. I'm hoping I get it around  early January in the second shipment maybe.

My family told me that I should keep my PS5 pre-order given that my birthday is less than two weeks after the console's release.
Sooooo....looks like I'll be joining the next gen sooner than expected :D

Digital pre-orders for launch titles are going up, not directly on the PS Store but hosted on the PlayStation site (note: these are UK links):

Spider-Man: Miles Morales

Demon's Souls

Destruction AllStars

Sackboy A Big Adventure

Godfall

Not sure exactly who here is going digital, but I know for sure that @Ganepark32 is, so I'll tag him :p note that as on PS4, these require immediate payment! Oh and for anyone in the US, just change the 'en-gb' part of the URL to 'en-us'  and @drahkon no idea if you're going digital with some of these, but just in case, I think you would just need to change 'en-gb' to 'de-de'.

Thanks for the heads-up, but for new releases I almost never go digital.

Thanks for that, the page for Sackboy answers the question I had which is that there is a free upgrade though I guess the price will be the same for both the PS4 and PS5 versions digitally do it doesn't make much if a difference in the end for saving a couple of quid.

I'd seen Miles Morales is up to pre-order on the PS Store already for the PS4 so with that being £49.99 and giving a free upgrade to the PS5 version, I'll probably grab that as it'll end up cheaper going down the route.

Apart from that, I'm not overly fussed for the rest. I may try Demon Souls at some point but I'm not the biggest fan of the Souls games so its not top of my list.

Out of the gate, I've decided I'll be going with Assassin's Creed Valhalla, Cyberpunk 2077 (I know its a backwards compat title but it launching on the same day as the PS5 and me wanting to play it on hardward that isn't going to melt makes it an unofficial launch title for me) and Miles Morales. That's probably it for bigger games at launch, just waiting to see what the launch lineup is like for indies and to see whether The Pathless will make it for launch (again, its cross gen but its a game I've been looking forward to since it was announced). Curious if there will be any surprises indie wise for launch, suppose we'll have to wait a couple more weeks before we know for sure what'll make it there for launch indie wise but I'd love for something huge, like hypothetically Hollow Knight Silksong (I've brought this up before but you can guarantee that Sony and Shuhei Yoshida will have talked to Team Cherry about bringing that game to PS5 as soon as possible and if it is to see a release this year, that would be a huge get. The game won't make this year but that'd be an awesome heavy hitter out the game indie wise).

Down the line, looking to pick up Immortals Fenyx Rising, depending on reviews, and then Hitman 3 in January but all that and being able to replay God of War thanks to the PS Plus Collection should keep me going through the new year.

Sorry to hear this. Eurogamer have an article about the ShopTo preorder situation. The ShopTo spokesperson told Eurogamer that this issue was down to the customer not clicking to convert their interest into a preorder in time. Seems as though ShopTo are not being honest and suggesting it was down to the customer being slow rather than the issue being caused by them releasing too many preorder slots (and later finding out they didn't have a big enough allocation).

Either they had too many pre-order slots or their "interest-to-pre-order" system is broken and doesn't check stock at any point during the process of ordering.

Both of these are entirely ShopTo's fault.

Do any folks reckon Sony might have underestimated disc-model demands?

I think it might be more of an issue to do with overall stock levels. It's rumoured that up to 80% of the consoles they've manufactured are the disc version so they must have believed the digital version would have fairly limited appeal. The digital model has also sold out everywhere which suggests demand is there for it.

I was pretty confident that the PS5 would sell out across the board (unlike the PS3/PS4) just because of how well the PS4 did this generation, and video games becoming more popular during the pandemic. I'm guessing they just couldn't produce more consoles in time.

PS3 and PS4 sold out at launch, most consoles do these days. Hell even the Wii U sold out, of course the PS5 was going to.

Could it be a case of people preordering more than they are actually intending to buy? I.e. putting a pre-order down at more than one shop, or for a console they might change their mind on later?

Not true, both PS3 and PS4 were readily available in the UK around launch, they never fully sold out over here. PS3 in particular there were plenty on the shelves.

Not saying they might have sold out locally in some regions around the world, but they were definitely available here.

That could amount for some of the consoles but I wouldn't think many. Most people I would think have only ordered one.

ahhh fair; makes me feel better they werent trying a digital grab by cashing in on desperate demand - and its just market forces. I'd agree same re: you to Bob's point - I doubt there's too many 'multiple' pre-orders causing problems and I imagine its a pretty kind of accounted for thing now in places.

Ladies and gents,

we can now officially say: PS5 is out next month.

:bouncy:

Yep, 7 weeks. 49 days. Still feels so far but at the same time, so close.

And I've just sorted money out in my accounts for my pre-order so now all sorted and away to pre-order Miles Morales but its now very real and the hype is only going to build from here.

Have to wait a couple of weeks before I put down any other pre-orders game wise but at the same time, I'm kind of waiting to hear what else will be coming at launch beyond AAA releases. Don't think we'll know more concrete details on stuff like that till the end of this month but still, I'll have Miles Morales at launch, probably Cyberpunk 2077 and AC Valhalla to play so November 19th can't come soon enough so that I can get stuck in.

On the debate of console sellout at launch, with the PS5 it is very much a case of demand has well and truly outstripped the supply for both models. While its still likely you'll be able to walk into a store and pick one up on launch day, I really do suspect that it'll be in a very, very small number of stores that thats the case and even then, an hour after opening and there'll be none left.

I've seen several people I know who were not gamers at all say they've picked up a console or are intending to, be that a current or a next gen one. The pandemic has turned a lot of people to gaming and so it really is at a point where Sony were never going to be able to meet demand because its just so high with everyone staying home, people wanting to and being ready to make that jump to next gen and because of the quality of Sony's first party titles that even this year, they've maintained to the highest standard. Combine all of those and you have a player base that was always going to outnumber the supply Sony was able to bring to market.

Expect long instances where consoles just aren't available to buy online or on stores because, as I say, demand is well and truly outstripping supply, perhaps akin to the PS2 launch if anyone can remember that (those were going out as fast as they came into stores and people were literally brawling over getting one before Christmas that year. I know people who had to have theirs collected at the back of the store up here because people were getting jumped for them).

Another game for launch. Wonder what other indies will be available?

:bouncy:

Was hoping this would make launch but the Holiday 2020 date they kept going with made me wonder if it would maybe launch in December instead. Happy that it'll be there day one, and a week earlier on PS4. The first of many indie games for me on next gen :D

Hopefully they'll put it up for pre-order so we can get the price point. I'm expecting it'll be more than Abzu was, and frankly even with it being included on Apple Arcade I could see it being £39.99 with how things are being priced for next gen (not that I'd complain as I think it looks great).

It's frustrating that none of the stores let you put in an order in perpetuity, I'm not fussed about getting one on launch day but I would like to get one within the first few months. You'd think with all the technology we have these days that retailers would have been able to implement a queue system, seems nuts that we still have to scramble to get pre-orders in. I've signed up to a few lists to be notified when stores get new allocations but even then I could get an email at 8 in the morning while I'm still in bed, then wake up and be disappointed that I missed out. Surely there is a better way to do it!

Anybody going to watch the Japanese hands-on videos (that sounds like porn...)?

People are expecting UI and everything...they will be disappointed. I'm 99% sure this'll be just clips of a few games.

Yep, going to be checking them out for sure, but mainly because I just want to see a little more of Astro's Playroom. A bit surprised Godfall of all games is going to be the other main focus point, but oh well. Still can't decide if I want to play Astro's or Miles first when my PS5 arrives, so hopefully seeing a little bit more helps!
