I sense that the joke was not to your liking, m'lord?

How did it make you feel? Did it touch a nerve?

So I thought that whole thing was basically a waste of time? Quick look at the controller, told us some stuff we already knew and then interview with Eric (I used to work with his wife!) about global marketing. I’m glad I didn’t stay up specifically for it, but upset I watched this instead of doing something useful with my time.

Yeah, there really wasn't that much to it. It was always going to be weird just seeing the controller and being told how nice it feels, what the haptic feedback and adaptive triggers are like, etc., but still felt like a bit of a letdown.

Only thing I liked as something to take away from this is that we'll hopefully stop seeing a dozen articles every week titled "PS5 PRE-ORDERS GO LIVE TOMORROW?!" with Eric talking about how we'll definitely know ahead of time. Though that does make me nervous about scalpers (but then that recent article about boosting initial production from 6 million to 9 million units will hopefully stop that being too much of a factor).

Still, as someone who has yet to play any of the Astro Bot games (waiting for that PSVR2 to play Rescue Mission!), it's definitely got me a little more excited to play it while waiting for everything to install.

OK, I keep hearing that the Xbox Series X is more powerful than the PS5 is, but I think most of the games I'm going to be interested in will probably end up being PS5 exclusives. So it looks like I'll have to get a PS5 for any future The Last of Us games, and also potentially for the Silent Hill reboot, which Dusk Golem claims is 100% happening. In fact, it could even make an appearance at Tokyo Game Show. Although for obvious reasons, that's going to be an online only event in September. I'm sure it's taken place around the 27th. Hopefully it's not gonna be like the recent Sony events where they showed off utter garbage.

Years ago, I skipped the PS3 for the Xbox 360, but after my console went busted, I got a PS3. I seldom ever played games for a long time. In recent years, I remembered what I was missing. For a while, I wasn't interested in gaming much because I just had too much stress and personal shite going on. But I have played my PS3 a bit since, although I mostly play the PS4 today.

Looks like kiosks are starting to be set up in Currys PC World, some 4 months ahead of launch:

Can't imagine us being too far from a launch date and price with these popping up, but at the same time, even with masks becoming mandatory in stores...seems a bit risky.

I guess maybe they could just make sure the demo person wipes down everything after use but the concept does seem antithetical to everything else going on at the moment.

Yes...wipe down everything after use.

Grubb is teasing a PS5 State of Play between 5th August and 11th August...

...though he has said this is very shaky due to everything going on at the moment. Apparently PlayStation have some more third party deals to share (Doritos swooped on Call of Duty this year though, clearly!). With the Tokyo Game Show going digital for the first time this year and unlikely to attract huge crowds from abroad, hopefully we could see some Japanese developers at this potential State of Play.

I don't care if it's a couple of years away and is a completely CG trailer. I want to see FFXVI!

Would also love to see some more of the PS5 UI that they teased during the event back in June.

Side note: August looks packed, and like a great way to wrap up this summer of gaming news!

It would definitely make sense for information to start coming a bit more regularly from now on. Assuming a launch in November I’d expect some sort of drop every month between now and then.

Update on compatible peripherals and accessories. Biggest takeaway is that the DualShock 4 will not be compatible with PS5 titles, but will be compatible with supported backwards compatible PS4 titles.

Quote

In our June Future of Gaming digital event, we announced an array of PlayStation 5 peripherals and accessories that will be launching this holiday season. But we know that many of you were also wondering if and how existing PlayStation 4 peripherals are compatible with the next-gen system. Today, we’re happy to share a brief FAQ that will answer some of your questions.

If you have questions that aren’t addressed, feel free to leave them in the comments below.

Which existing PS4 peripherals/accessories will work on PS5?

- Specialty peripherals, such as officially licensed racing wheels, arcade sticks, and flight sticks, will work with PS5 games and supported PS4 games.
- The Platinum and Gold Wireless Headsets, as well as third-party headsets that connect via USB port or audio jack, will work on PS5 (the headset companion app is not compatible with PS5).
- The DualShock 4 wireless controller and PlayStation officially licensed third-party gamepad controllers will work with supported PS4 games.
- Both the PS Move Motion Controllers and the PlayStation VR Aim Controller will work with supported PS VR games on PS5.

Please note, not all PlayStation officially licensed or third-party peripherals/accessories may work on PS5. We recommend checking with the manufacturer to confirm whether a product will work on PS5 and specific titles.

Will DualShock 4 work with PS5 games?

No, we believe that PS5 games should take advantage of the new capabilities and features we’re bringing to the platform, including the features of DualSense wireless controller.

Is the PlayStation Camera for PS4 compatible with PS5?

Yes, PlayStation Camera will work with PS5 for playing supported PS VR games. It will require a PlayStation Camera adaptor that will be provided at no additional cost to PS VR users. More details on how to get the adaptor will be announced at a later date.

And that’s it! We’ll continue to provide updates on PlayStation 5 down the road, so make sure to check back soon.

I think it’s a good thing you can’t use the DualShock 4 with the PS5 games. Sony have been very clear that generational gaps are an important part of their process and the controller is an integral part of that.

Good to know that the specialist peripherals will transfer across though. I’ve been considering spending a considerable amount of money on a racing wheel and it would totally suck if it wouldn’t work on PS5.

Made a dedicated thread for it, but wanted to put it down here too, because I do think it's an important part of the conversation surrounding the PS5: this week's State of Play won't feature any news on the PS5.

Now really isn't the time to start mixing their messaging, I feel they should be all-in on PS5 now, especially seeing as we have the (presumably) last of the first party exclusives out of the way now that TLOU2 and Ghost have released.

Would hope that they at least have the foresight to confirm a date/time for the next State of Play if there is indeed another one scheduled for August. Weird too, because the Champions League kicks off again this Friday, and with PS5 advertising being on show, you'd think now would be the time to pounce.

But alas, guess we might end up waiting until Gamescom for more game news, but I would hope that we'd have been able to pre-order it by then.

As with everything Sony has done so far regarding the PS5: They know what they're doing. ::shrug: Pretty much every little (and big) thing they announced (be it via a stream or just a photo on social media) was a huge hit.

This State of Play won't affect the PS5 marketing negatively at all.

I think the PS5 advertising during CL is a pretty big "pounce".

I'm getting really bored with this cat and mouse drip feed build up.

Anyway, really weird announcement, but at least they've learned to manage expectations since that Cerny talk blunder. Putting a blunt "no big PS5 announcements!" says it all.

You mean like revealing the PS5 and release window on the same day Concrete Genie came out? Great timing guys. :indeed:

Oh yeah, I totally agree that they know what they're doing, though I just think it's an odd thing to do at this time. Now that TLOU2 and Ghost are out, I think most were fully expecting them to turn their full gaze towards the PS5.

Which I don't think is a totally unfair expectation three and a half months from launch.

Agreed, but an even bigger pounce I think would be advertising going around saying "PS5 - Pre-order now".

They no doubt know what they're doing and this thing will break records, I'm sure, especially after the reported increase in units being manufactured for launch, but I feel like it would have been a great way to show that the PS5 is now their main focus.

It just reminds me a little too much of Xbox's handling of their Showcase where they looked like they were caught in the middle of two generations. Don't think that's the case here, but I do hope this is the last PS4 SoP and that they share some plans for the PS5 not too long after.

Sure, but that holds true for the past, present and the future. I think the reaction to Sony saying "Pre-order now" will always be "awesome!" (depending on the price, of course).

I think it's pretty clear that it is. For Sony.
The upcoming State of Play will surely be for third party games only, which I think is great for the devs. The PS4 player base is huge and giving devs a show to present their games is pretty nifty. There's no doubt there's still a substantial demand for PS4 games.

Of course, I'd also love to hear more news on the PS5, but for now, I'll be happy to tune in on Thursday and see what's in store for the console that's still rocking the show :D

Waiting for the inevitable "PS5. 5, for five 5's...the PS5 will be on sale for $/£/€555.55" to come out of all of this :p honestly don't expect that to be too far off the mark now that I type that.

I've done my saving so far based on £499, but left myself quite a bit of wiggle room. Much more interested in seeing the price for the digital edition, even though I don't plan on getting one, because that seems best positioned to try to match any potential lowball Microsoft puts out there, such as with Lockhart, if that still comes to fruition. £449, £429, and £399 all seem kind of realistic for that version in my eyes.

Yeah, I'm just getting to the point where I want to have my pre-order in, if nothing else, and I know a lot of others are in that same position too. Might be a bit impatient of me, but I'm really excited!

Of course I'll still tune in though, curious to see which indie games will be showing back up.

I swear you keep saying the Cerny talk was a blunder in the hope that you'll convince people through repetition. 3:1 likes to dislikes ratio doesn't lie.

I'm not trying to convince anyone, I've no need. That seemed to be the general consensus after it came out. Interesting talk but badly messaged and not the right time for it. No point getting into this again, you disagree, that's fine.

Except it wasn't the general consensus, either with people or the websites which analysed his talk!

Seeing some rumours of a big PS5 event in the coming weeks. Fingers crossed it's true.

I do think Sony are going into next gen with a tonne of momentum compared to Microsoft. They've just announced sales figure for the past quarter and quite frankly they are extraordinary. At the moment, PS4 is tracking above PS2 sales, which says a lot given that home gaming in Japan is non-existent. One thing that I never thought about until just know is that more than ever, gamers don't want to switch ecosystems as they'll lose their digital software. Sony are selling huge amounts of software at the moment and I've got no doubt it will stop people switching over to Xbox Series X.

I don't think I've ever been this excited by a next gen console to be honest. With PS4/ XBO, we saw big jumps in GPU power and RAM but fairly modest CPU gains. With PS5, we're seeing a 8x increase in CPU performance, 20x performance in speed (from HDD to SSD) and even then, the GPU's are better in 2020 than the PS4 GPU was in 2013.

I've just completed RDR2 on XBX and whilst the game was utterly gorgeous, you could tell it was really pushing the limits of what game design could be like on a current console. I can't wait to see what the future holds

Regarding the bolded bit, I absolutely agree. I've said it before but it's far, far more difficult to simply switch consoles than it has been in previous generations. You've got the digital software you'll lose access to like you said but there's more than that - people have got a lot of physical games that they can continue to play due to backwards compatibility and friends lists that they would lose if they switched. It's also become more difficult than ever to afford more than one of these new consoles due to how expensive it will likely be plus the online sub costs.

It really did make that 2013 E3 so very important to get right, as we're seeing the knock on effects carry through to the next generation, and probably even beyond that.

I'm also really excited about these new consoles. I think the introduction of the SSD will make the older systems feel really quite outdated by comparison. For a lot of the games that have recently come out (e.g. TLOU2, GoT) I'm holding off in the hope that they get a patch shortly after the release of the PS5.
