Cyberpunk 2077 (10th December 2020)

Recommended Posts

I've just spent over half an hour searching for a dedicated Cyberpunk 2077 thread to update, but I couldn't find one (if there already is, please, by all means, delete/merge this thread), so I thought it best to start one in the event of its absence.

Cyberpunk 2077 is an upcoming RPG developed and published by CD Projekt Red, whom are most well-known as the Polish developers and publishers of the The Witcher video game series.

What we've seen so far:

The game was initially announced in May 2012, before a teaser trailer was released on 10th January 2013 (which garnered a number of trailer awards).

Some concept art images were also released alongside the trailer.

What we know so far:

  • The game is likely to release on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Windows.
  • It will be playable in both first- and third-person perspectives.
  • The game will feature both a single-player story and an online multiplayer component.
  • The game is based on loosely on the Cyberpunk 2020 tabletop role-playing game, which was created by Mike Pondsmith. Pondsmith is consulting on the project.
  • Marcin Przybyłowicz, the composer for The Witcher 3, was chosen to write the game's music.
  • CD Projekt Red started upgrading its REDengine 3 game engine for the game around the time The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was released; a funding application for the Polish government, granting CD Projekt Red $7 million (USD), confirmed the employment of the next iteration of said engine: the REDengine 4.
  • The same funding application noted that the game's release could potentially take place in 2019.
  • It will be set in an openworld metropolis called Night City, a fictional city located between San Francisco and Los Angeles.
  • "Braindance", a digital recording device connected to the player character's brain, will enable the player character to experience the thoughts, emotions and muscle movements of other people (likely NPCs, but possibly even the player characters of other players) as if they were the character's own.
  • The game will feature non-English speaking characters. If the player does not speak a character's language, they can purchase translator implants to improve their understanding of them, with translation quality depending on the quality of the translator implant (i.e. an expensive implant will translate much more accurately than a relatively cheaper one).
  • During pre-production, approximately 50 staff were working on the game. As recent as last summer, around 550 staff were reportedly working on the game (compared to the peak staff volume of The Witcher 3 at 200).
  • As of October 2017, CD Projekt Red co-founder Marcin Iwinski and studio head Adam Badowski revealed in a joint statement that the game was moving along as planned.
  • In June 2017, CD Projekt Red published a statement explaining that data containing early designs had been stolen and threatened to be released to the public. The developer refused to comply with the ransom demand; the stolen data/ early designs have yet to be leaked.

Now, onto why I wanted to update the relevant thread...

Earlier this month, on January 10th (5 years to the day after the release of the game's teaser trailer), the game's official Twitter account posted for the first time since December 2013, after recently being verified.

A few days later, on 15th January, Gry-Online - the largest gaming website in Poland (more-or-less their version of the US's Gamespot) - published an article revealing that they had received information from two separate sources about Cyberpunk 2077 being present at E3 this year (12th - 14th June), with both a trailer and gameplay footage to boot (The Witcher 3 was previously present at E3, so this wouldn't come as too much of a surprise). According to their sources, the game will likely appear as part of either Sony's or Microsoft's conference, though they stated that it is more likely to appear at the latter; their sources also stated that a playable demo will be available at E3 behind closed doors for industry journalists. They ended the article by stating that this information should all be taken with a grain of salt, as the game's presence at E3 could be subject to change depending on how the development of the game continues over the coming months. In the article's comments section, it was posited that the site's information is "bulls***", but interestingly, the website's editor-in-chief responded to the comment by telling them to "Save this page and come back here in June. We'll talk then."

It's also worth noting that CD Projekt Red's co-founder - the aforementioned Marcin Iwinski - previously praised Bethesda's rollout of Fallout 4, saying that "We're impressed with Fallout 4's rollout. [Bethesda] came on stage and said, 'It's here, it's real, and it's coming out on this date.' We're going to do something similar. We're going to wait [to reveal Cyberpunk 2077] until we can show off a very meaningful piece of it." Granted, if the game is at this year's E3 then there's no guarantee that it will be released by the end of the year, but it's presence could certainly signify that it will be released within the following 12 months, given that the game has been in development for a number of years now.

“It was a good year, but we’re sure the next will be even better. You can see for yourself. 😉” is how CDPR closed their Christmas party summary over on their website

I’m not sure how that couldn’t be taken as a strong and suggestive hint that we’ll see something about the game this year.

The wait continues...

Man, forgot how awesome that teaser (and song!!) were.

Too damn long of a wait for this game.

In an interview with Vodafone, Mike Pondsmith - the author of the original pen-and-paper RPG on which Cyberpunk 2077 is based - has teased that the game's next trailer will exhibit "how much death" there is in the dystopian setting of Night City.

The fact that there's talk about the contents of the next trailer means that its in development to some extent, and seems to be yet another hint that the trailer could appear at this year's E3.

CD Projekt Red has been confirmed to be attending E3 this year

Could be nothing.

Could just be some news on Gwent.

But after everything that has happened in the last few weeks, it seems like it's almost a formality that Cyberpunk 2077 will have a presence at this year's E3.

I really hope that they show off the game at E3. Eager to see how it's progressing! Trying not to build up my hopes too much, but The Witcher 3 has set the bar reallllly high.

Watching Altered Carbon recently has got me more excited for this game again. There's so much potential with genre and CD Projekt working on it.

CD Projekt Red have opened a third studio in Wroclaw to aid in the development of Cyberpunk 2077; the studio is comprised of 18 veteran game developers, many of whom are former members of Wroclaw-based developer Strange New Things (which was founded by former Techland and IO Interactive developers).

Pawel Zawodny, Head of CD Projekt Red Wroclaw, had this to say:

Quote

We're pretty hyped to be on the spearhead of this new office. We know Wrocław inside out and it’s an amazing place to make games. The team is strong, and I’m sure we have both the experience and the creative firepower to make Cyberpunk 2077 an even better game.

CD Projekt President and Joint CEO Adam Kicinski added:

Quote

Wrocław is one of the biggest and most technologically advanced cities in Poland and a playing field for serious creative talent. I think the scope of our current and future projects, as well as the overall package we’re bringing in, will pull in people who were hesitant to move to Warsaw or Cracow.

The founding dev team of CDPR Wrocław is already pretty stellar, but I still can’t wait to see what talents we’ll discover in new people along the way.

Elsewhere, CDPR has also been confirmed to be attending Gamescom this August, and Gwent’s Community Specialist has recently stated in an AMA that there will be no Thronebreaker at E3, which is yet another strong hint that Cyberpunk 2077 will be present this June.

Ugggggh I just want concrete information about this game. Less rumors more footage and announcements and E3

Slightly unrelated, fantastic that CDPR is growing to the point of opening more studios. More developers of their caliber and morality is a good thing.

During CD Projekt’s fiscal year 2017 financial presentation, President Adam Kiciński mentioned that he’d “terribly” like to say something about Cyberpunk 2077, but today is not the time.

When asked when we’ll know more, Kiciński commented that he can’t just announce the announcement. Pressed further on what will be showcased at E3, he mentioned that it will be announced “just before” the show.

An analysis firm recently suggested that the game could be a cross-generation project involving the next round of PlayStation and Xbox consoles. Asked to comment on this, Kiciński explained that the next generation has not been announced yet, so he can only speculate. Technologically-wise Cyberpunk 2077 is “very advanced.” The studio’s tech is “ready to interface with future generations.” The game is developed in such a way that it can take advantage “of future, very powerful” hardware.

Kiciński confirmed that it’ll be possible to create your character and choose among various classes. This pretty much denies a wild rumor that was spread on youtube a few months ago, alleging that the studio had moved to a different design with no classes.

Asked whether there will be multiplayer, he confirmed that first of all, the studio is going to deliver a huge story-drive single-player role-playing game as it was the case for The Witcher 3.

As for the possibility of adding multiplayer in expansions, he mentioned that he does not like to comment on that, but he won’t say that it’s not going to happen, as the developer already mentioned in the past that they want future projects to include online components at some point.

Asked whether the developer is considering the Battle Royale genre for Cyberpunk 2077, Kiciński explained that at the moment they’re considering everything and anything but as of today they’re not discussing the game yet. The first thing they’re actually going to discuss is the immense story-driven role-playing single player experience without any microtransactions whatsoever, or any hidden payments, just as it was the case for The Witcher 3, even if it’s going to be a very different game, with no predefined character, a futuristic world, and 3D movement.

Key points:

• CDPR will reveal their E3 2018 plans shortly before the conference.

Cyberpunk 2077 is extremely advanced.

• Character creation is available, and we will be able to choose among various classes.

I can almost smell Cyberpunk 2077 in the oncoming E3 air.

It's been over 2077 days since we announced our plan to develop Cyberpunk 2077. We released a CGI trailer, gave some interviews and... went dark. Normal procedure for these kinds of things - you announce a game and then shut up, roll up your sleeves, and go to work. We wanted to give you The Witcher 3 and both expansions first, which is why this period of staying silent was longer than we planned. Sorry for that.

As soon as we concluded work on Blood and Wine we were able to go full speed ahead with CP2077's pre-production. But we chose to remain silent. Why? At some point, we made a decision to resume talking about the game only when we have something to show. Something meaningful and substantial. This is because we do realise you've been (im)patiently waiting for a very long time, and we wouldn't want anyone to feel that we're taking this for granted. On the contrary - it gives us a lot of extra motivation. The hype is real, so the sweat and tears need to be real, too :).

But to the point. Today is the day. If you're seeing this, it means you saw the trailer - our vision of Cyberpunk, an alternative version of the future where America is in pieces, megacorporations control all aspects of civilised life, and gangs rule the rest. And, while this world is full of adrenaline, don't let the car chases and guns mislead you. Cyberpunk 2077 is a true single player, story-driven RPG. You'll be able to create your own character and..., well, you'll get to know the rest from what we show at our booth at E3. Be on the lookout for previews!

Before we finish, you probably have some questions, right?

When? When we told you we would only release the game when it's ready, we meant it. We're definitely much, much closer to a release date than we were back then :), but it's still not the time to confirm anything, so patience is still required. Quality is the only thing that drives us - it's the beauty of being an independent studio and your own publisher.

How big? Seriously big, but..., to be honest, we have no bloody clue at this point in time. Once we put it all together, we will openly tell you what you can expect. And we promise we'll do this before we start talking about any pre-orders or ask anything of you.

Free DLC/Expansions/DRM? Expect nothing less than you got with The Witcher 3. As for DRM, CP2077 will be 100% DRM-free on PC.

Microtransactions? In a single player role-playing game? Are you nuts?

Once again, thank you for your patience. If you have a minute, do visit cyberpunk.net and share your opinion (about anything) with us. We read everything you post and we treat it very seriously.

Yours, CD PROJEKT RED Team

Looks AMAZING!!

Definitely going to be worth the wait. This'll no doubt be the game to get me playing (and hopefully enjoying) a story-driven RPG again.

After my complete loss of interest in Fallout 76, this has now become my most anticipated upcoming game. Looks absolutely great, plus CD Projekt Red seem like my sort of developer.

Looks as epic as I thought it would. And you’ve gotta love how they handle PR and game development compared to everyone else, and it makes them stand out as one of the best studios out there.

They’re scheduled to turn up on YouTube Live @ E3 tomorrow to talk to Geoff Keighley about the game, and they’ve teased that we’ll still hear/see plenty more at this E3. Behind-closed-doors demos as rumoured a while back are expected, but I won’t be at all surprised if we get the first public look at gameplay when they talk to Geoff tomorrow.

Killer soundtrack, excellent cyberpunk design ethos...it’s a great time to be a gamer! I have a feeling it’ll be coming in late 2019/early 2020 now, seeing as we didn’t get a release date last night, but I don’t mind. Incredibly smart in making it clear that the game’s development is coming above their bottomline, and that the game is still a while off, and will be ready when it’s ready.

Roll on our next look at the game! :D

So refreshing to hear from a company like this. Can't help think that it won't last forever, one day they'll be bought and ruined by Microsoft or something...

Has anyone been on Resetera? not sure if it extends to the net but people are freaking out over how this game isn't Cyberpunk.......because it has a bright day time in the game

Yes you read that right, because it has a day and night cycle and because smog/a grey wash/ an orange wash isn't making it seem cloudy and over cast during the day its not true cyberpunk etc

Every single year i am just as surprised by the random fallouts over announcements as i am by the games

Oh my God...now we have a historically inaccurate Cyberpunk game.

The gaming industry is turning to shit. It's all doomed. DOOMED.

Jesus wept. If genre parameters were that narrow then every new game, book or film would constitute its own unique genre.

Genres are fluid and somewhat arbitrarily defined by critics. They change all the time with new ideas, and all works of art straddle a mix of genres to some degree. So to get aggy over a perceived colour inaccuracy is beyond pathetic.

As for this game - I'm digging what's been teased so far, and I like how they've gone for an on-the-nose title as well.

No, and frankly I’d appreciate it if you didn’t bring happenings of that cesspool here and make me read it with my own eyes.

That shit is just depressing.

I can understand what they're trying to say, but I don't consider it to be true. Yes, typical cyberpunk would give off images such as many of the scenes that you would find in Blade Runner. High-tech futuristic societies that also combine with the breakdown of society, leading to those feelings of isolation or loneliness. I'd picture crime-ridden streets, lowlifes, all amongst a backdrop of bright neon street signs and tall buildings, with the dark sky helping to make those flashes of colour stand out. Society should be a utopia, but is much closer to a dystopia. But, that is a stereotypical view of what cyberpunk is. It's a bit like saying that all rock should sound like AC/DC or Aerosmith. That's not really telling the whole story.

To me, I instantly thought of the game as Cyberpunk much as in the same way that Blade Runner 2049 was Cyberpunk, despite much of it being set in the daytime. Those feelings of the breakdown of society or where people live in slums and poverty amidst the backdrop of all of this technology around them were present in both Blade Runner and Blade Runner 2049. To say that all Cyberpunk should be set in the night time is silly or that a game that features daytime isn't Cyberpunk is just daft, tbh. Yes, the stereotypical images will always be set at night, as it makes those neon colours and bright lights stand out. But, the darkness is but just one feature. It doesn't encompass all of what Cyberpunk is.
