The End For Neogaf?

Recommended Posts

If this place dies then surely there'll just be another place catering to hardcore gamers. Feels like when they banned certain torrent sites...more just popped up to take their place.

Maybe we’ll see some of them end up here at N-Europe? Who knows? I like to think that we’re a nice little community with an open and friendly attitude (which is certainly quite rare these days, especially with the Gamergate types flooding the interwebs), so perhaps we’ll see some of the good ones end up here!

It would be nice (and obviously welcome), but given that "N-Europe" was banned/censored on there I doubt it will happen :heh:

Why?

Anyway, I never directly interacted with Neogaf so this is all ::shrug: to me.

Damn.  Like Hero of Time, I lurked in the background on NeoGAF to read up on whatever the latest and breaking news in gaming was.  But honestly, this is a crap show.  Bet the owner is now kicking himself for not taking that supposed offer of 10 million.

What'll become of NeoGAF.  At the moment, it's reading an error 503 so I'm guessing it's overloaded with all the topics going right after the owner (which doesn't surprise me really, to be honest).  Hopefully, it pops back up at some point down the line, and hopefully Evilore free.  May try Reddit, but that place is a mess and is confusing without knowing how it works (especially with all the subreddits dotted about)

I too want to know why! Never even knew knee was too risqué for the gaf. Not that I find it surprising. I’ve been reading elsewhere about people’s experiences with having dissenting opinions being banned.

Waypoint made it clear that they won’t be a neogaf replacement. Makes sense as there were many ‘allowed’ toxic elements and issues of inclusivity that goes against their philosophy.

Hopefully whatever replaces neogaf is improved.

Years ago Tellyn reported that THQ were shutting down. This news spread around the net but the source he had was wrong and the news was false. This got us banned on Gaf.

Personally, I just thought it was Nathan seeing into the future because THQ did eventually close down. :D

Wouldn't expect much but you'll at least get back some people like me for sure.

Hey, by the way.

Completely unwarranted, I feel. The way she tells it it comes off sounding like a misjudged and horribly timed attempt at being spontaneous and romantic with someone with whom he obviously shared some sort of connection (since she herself did say they ended up hooking up later down the road) rather than anything genuinely malicious, especially since he didn't really do anything about it after she shut him down.

Why this is outrageous or unacceptable in any way whatsoever is a bit beyond me right now. “I feel gross from having ever been in contact with this person" doesn't really fit with the rest of what she's saying.

Not that harassment should ever be tolerated, mind...

Edit: how does one multiquote under this new interface? Ended up having to rewrite this whole post because multiquoting Smeagol made this one disappear. Can't exactly copy and paste since it's not just text now so I was counting on automerged doublepost to fix that but I can see that feature isn't a part of this platform either.

Edit 2: nevermind figured out the multiquotes, it works fine on the desktop, wasn't working on the tablet but oh well.

This is how I'm seeing it too. This story doesn't really seem to add up if she later went onto have a relationship with him afterwards.

What I still can't figure out is why a random FB post  caused all of this. Why did the mods all stand down now when just a few months ago,  they were all being told to lock and delete any mention of Amirox and pretend that they all had no idea who he was and sweep under the rug that one of the major mods of Neogaf had been arrested for owning child porn? Why did none of them call Evilore out and stand down then?

Got in to work, checked my emails and then went to click Gaf to check the news. Feels really weird it not being there. I was doing the same yesterday while I was at home. I kept instinctively clicking on the saved Gaf link on my phone right after checking N-E. Slow days at work are going to be an absolute nightmare now. :(

Really is weird how many gamergators are out there who absolutely detest neogaf. Didn't know Gamespot mods are like that...

Gamespot is one of the biggest names in gaming media. Kind of insane. Do people not realise how toxic that is.

Very bizarre seeing NeoGaf disappear like this.  I was never a member over there due to their pretentious registration system, but checked it out pretty much on a daily basis for gaming news. The pre-E3/Nintendo Direct hype over there was always entertaining too. :D

I think it's the end.

How can a site function without moderators and admin staff.

Can't they just....appoint new staff?

Can't be that hard to find moderators, I mean look at the state of some of ours.

Who want to work and support the owner with such a questionable background? Even if they did they will lose many followers who won't continue to use the site.

I only see some kind survival if the owner is no longer involved.

There is news of a new GAF-style forum cropping up later today or tomorrow (depending on timezones).  Looking on Twitter, some members have moved onto SLAENT and Waypoint.

Wow I'm busy renovating my house and not on the internet for two days and Gaf dies? I'm not sure how to feel about that!

On the one hand Gaf is great for news and expose's, I loved people's deep dives into game history, development and secrets (Mama Robotnik's Legacy of Kain stuff was amazing) and some of Off Topic's discussion was amazing

but on the other hand over the past two to three years I feel the moderation and forum has become increasingly intolerant of opposing views and I don't mean accepting right wing views I mean accepting any view that even slightly leans away from the hive mind neo left view that sections take. GamerGate was the catalyst for this in my mind, I saw people make quite reasonable neutral views or even be willing to discuss the opposing views and make concessions that there are issues and they'd get dog piled or banned, likewise with social issues if people didn't take the typical view then they were dog piled of banned and all tared with the same brush of condoning violence and abuse against women.

I remember getting banned when Clarkson hit the top gear staff member, for criticising the choice of wording in some articles, I drew issue with violent and sustained attack over a 30 second period which implied a constant barrage of fists, when other articles said it was a few blows over said period. I said we should wait for the full facts to come out before jumping up and down and revelling in how he was exposed as some sort of brute, however the hive mind at the time was how he was akin to some violent sociopath who had been exposed as beating a man to within an inch of his life - I was banned by Modbot along with anyone who defended or took a neutral stance, with the explanation of "encouraging violence". People even said they couldn't believe I was banned in said thread, people who towed the 'party' line. but that's my example, I've seen other discussions occur and beyond page 2 reasonable discussion doesn't occur its usually back patting and dog piling beyond that point.

I think it got addressed at one point and moderation on that stance drew back, but equally for fear of banning and dog piling a lot of people didn't post comments or opinions and you'd get threads pop up where discussion could occur but it would be an echo chamber of people agreeing, and sometimes hilariously because nobody was there to dogpile people would then pick apart posts and argue amongst themselves over semantics and implied this and that.

All of which is hilarious as I'd heard about Evillores questionable history in the past and other mods who had hilarious double standards.

I hope someone takes over Gaf and it survives but with some changes, otherwise on a purely selfish basis I say we start a membership drive on Gaf and try and poach the user base

People on there would only know about us if they have previously been member on heres. We are hardly a blip on the radar anymore.

The mods were heavy handed all the time. Seemingly randomly banning. That is known.

I am not convinced at all of the bolded. All of society is sexist, Its how we have been. Left or Right as labels are almost meaningless when it comes to human behaviour. Neogaf especially, has flaws typical of its userbase which is very much in line with studies and work done on online communities. Sexism was rife there they just somewhat prevented many from speaking it out and letting it consume all discussion. The same goes for race and other issues.

The gamergate narrative doesnt stick, shouting loudest or drowning out others does not mean your opinion is more correct or valuable. As it is gamers have a bad reputation for good reason.

This #Metoo movement is a good thing.

Looks like the official gaf Discord chat have already started making a new forum called ResetEra and they expect to launch it sometime today. Seems it has the biggest group of Gaf members and some of the old moderators behind it.

If was up to provide specific examples i would, i've been dogpiled on there for offering a view that didn't meet the hive mind. The best example i can think of was a thread about a speaker being effectively prevented from speaking at a US university because of protests over prior comments, and people quite reasonably argued that it is censorship and that freedom of speech allows them the right to speak, they should be allowed to speak and the correct way to protest them is to challenge and debate their views to prove them wrong, that suppressing a view point pushes it underground and allows resentment to foster. That asn't a popular view by the vocal members who argued allowing them to speak perpetuates their views and its a waste of time discussing anything with them they are not worth the air or the time, basically viewing them as nothing, they didn't see how that in itself is a dangerous view point to take, to censor those who don't conform.

The Gamegate things on gaf were a shit show on both sides, i stuck well out of that.

The problem was there was a core of vocal members who were either mods or friends with mods who shielded themselves from things and as you say random in their enforcement of rules.

The MeToo movement is a bloody amazing thing.

Yeah like when I reported about Beyond Good and Evil 2 and IGN slagged it off.  It was eventually true!
