Anyone else trying out Dead Cells at the moment? It seems all right but doesn't immediately live up to the hype, for me at least. Here's why: on my second run, I got stuck for a good few minutes with seemingly nothing to do but tickle some green goo, and man did I really hammer that tickle button (right shoulder) because I expected something to come of it. Like the goo would grow into a platform and let me access the above area. I ended up combing back through all the rooms I'd cleared out--even going back to the first area a couple of times to see if anything had changed there... maybe a triple jump or wall jump would be given to me?!--then after quite a bit of experimenting, I managed to make it to a platform that seemed unreachable and ungrabbable on previous tries. I only persisted with it because there were no other openings on the map. Maybe you get used to it over time, but something about the jumping feels off to me here. It doesn't help that the second area requires precise platforming to land between spikes and avoid rotating mace things.

Yeah, amazing game. Struggled big time at first but soon got into it and started to see why everyone was showering it with praise.

Cant speak to the green goo though.

P.S. You can do the one week free trial for free. :heh:

I know, but I'd rather save it for when I feel like playing Smash online again, or have little cousins around the house who might want to play Super Mario Bros. Or both. Don't want to waste the week trying a game for a few hours (and I know it'll only be a few hours).

Maybe I shouldn't have been expecting the modern classic I've seen Dead Cells touted as.

Rule of thumb, I'm always wary when people praise roguelikes, because roguelikes vary a lot in design, look, and philosophy. I love genre darlings like Rogue Legacy or Binding of Isaac, but thought Spelunky was just okay, and Risk of Rain felt quite mediocre. But all of them felt like they were equally, universally praised.

The key is to forget the roguelike aspect entirely when considering it, and just ask yourself if that game looks fun to play on its own terms. Because let's face it, raw fun is what roguelikes live and die by, not level design (and rarely story).

But it's an indie title and most of these developers seems to struggle with making a game without shoving these things into it.

Thank goodness :p

I wonder, did you buy Dead Cells and if you did, why? Usually you do your research about games and should've known that this is a roguelite, meaning you would've avoided it like the plague :D

Indeed I did.

The look of the game appealed to me and, if done right, certain rogue features can be fun. Plus, I'm usually willing to give a game the benefit of the doubt and try it myself. Sometimes I end up liking something I thought I would hate and other times it doesn't work out that way.

Fair enough.

I must've misremembered your disdain for roguelites then :p

I still dislike them but if there's something I find appealing about a game then I'll give it a whirl. For Example, ToeJam and Earl is one of my favourite Mega Drive games and I loved the recent reboot. It's a roguelike game that I love because it is fun, full of charm and character, with an amazing soundtrack.

The roguelike stuff is what puts me off Hades. Despite the adulation it has received. Got burned with Dead Cells - played it for a few hours and gave up. I hate starting again when you die. The lure of better gear/stats is not enough reward for me to keep playing.

Fair enough. With Hades there's also lore that you're rewarded with, though. And it's pretty great.
Probably not enough to pull you in if the general gist of rogue-lites puts you off.

Same for me. It's a shame because I love both Bastion and Transistor. I should really get around to playing Pyre at some point. It's been sat in my PS4 library for far too long,

Narita Boy is coming to the Nintendo Switch

Now up on the main page. :D

Narita Boy comes to the Switch, thanks to a publishing deal with Team 17.

Check the article for the press release and the latest trailer.

- - - - -

I can't believe its been nearly three years since the start of the Kickstarter.

I remember @Ashley posting about it, the game looked great, so I backed it as well, and its a title which has really been looking like it'll be great once it's out.

This is a perfect fit for the Switch, and I'm glad that Team 17 saw the clear sales potential that this game has.

Ah cool. Yeah it did look interesting, I may check it out. Or I may forget by the time it comes out, both things are equally possible.

And just realised this thread is on page 64 (if you use the default posts per page).

I loved this game. It may be short, hence the name, but I went in not knowing anything and thoroughly enjoyed it.

@nekunando and @Londragon were both positive on it, so I thought I'd complete the trifecta. The art style is also super cool.

Today I tried to buy the titles I wanted from the Capcom Arcade Museum. Sadly, it was nothing like what I expected: I thought I could simply buy the individual games I wanted, but no, gotta spend 15€ on a full pack of games.

Since Strider and Chiki Chiki Boys are on the same pack anyway, I might still wait for a discount. Not going to do the same for Cyberbots, I'm afraid.

Thanks for this.  I absolutely hate browsing the Switch eShop for sales; it's an absolutely miserable experience.

That price for the Castlevania Collection is absolutely insane! If you haven't already bought it? Do so immediately!

Surprised to see Melody of Memory on sale! It came out really not that long ago!  Me thinks it's time to snap it up.

Burnout Paradise is also finally the price it should've been sold at originally.

I can't see them mentioned in either of the lists above, so I've got to scream from the rooftops that both LIMBO (£2.24, down from £8.99) and INSIDE (£4.49, down from £17.99) are also part of the sale. They've been on sale before, so I imagine there's a good chance you might've already picked them up, but if not? Don't skip those games.

Both are wonderful and atmospheric; shorter games a bit on the bleeker side of things.  I think INSIDE is probably one of my favourite indie games, and I don't know many people who would argue with that choice. And LIMBO is also great, unless you have a crippling fear of spiders :p

I summarize the best of the eShop every Sunday in a video.  This week there's so much on offer that each sale item is flicked through with no video.  But don't want the video to outstay its welcome.

Well, I ultimately decided to not buy either of those two... but only because I already own Limbo, and I decided to get Inside on GOG instead :heh:

For the Switch, I noticed Katamari Damacy was at a good price, so I snapped it.
