Posted March 18, 2016 (edited) Well, I'll give you two of my favourite movies: In Bruges Black comedy crime thingy and - in a way - really dark. Love the setting, love the actors, love the dialogues, love the atmosphere. Coherence I can't tell you why this is one of my favourite movies because it would spoil everything.. Posted March 18, 2016 Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain Funny. Great Music. Wonderful Idealised version of Paris. My Neighbour Totoro Old Style Japanese Culture. Imaginative Great Characters including the standard Miyazaki independent girl. Great music. The Big Lebowski Funny. Great Music. The Dude. Juxtaposition of two great characters that are opposites of each other, but still best friends. Hmm. From this it seems I only like movies with music I like that are funny. Posted March 18, 2016 Intouchables: great French film about a guy from the projects who gets hired by a quadriplegic to be his helper. Kung Fu Hustle: Stylish Kung Fu comedy film thing. A Chinese mafia boss tries to oust the residents of a council block, they resist. South Park the Movie: Just fucking hilarious. The Prestige: Hugh Jackman vs Christian Bale in a magic-off. The Lone Ranger: Absolute crud for 2 hours, but the final 20 mins is cinematic glory. Can't think of any more right now. I've left out obvious ones that you've probably seen. Ghostbusters because it's amazing The Shawshank Redemption because it's a beautiful masterpiece that never gets old Titanic because it makes me believe love exists and I'm a soppy tart Kick Ass because it makes me believe anybody can be heroes and also Hit Girl is a boss bitch! Posted March 19, 2016 By genre... Horror - Aliens because it blends the right amount of pathos with fear. Action - Avengers the final scene in New York is just such an amazing thrill. Comedy - Airplane! I don't think enough good can be said about this movie. Without it, I don't believe that a lot of modern comedy would be possible. Drama - To Kill A Mockingbird probably the greatest book-to-movie adaptation of all time. I dare you not to tear up when Tom Robinson starts crying, protesting his innocence. Animation - A tie between The Iron Giant and The Lego Movie. Both very intelligent movies that reward second viewings. Sci-Fi - Wrath of Khan. A beautiful movie. Probably the best of all the Star Trek movies, and certainly the equal of virtually any science fiction movie before or since. Genuinely fantastic performances from everyone in the cast. Posted March 19, 2016 My all-time favourite has to be Alien. Fantastic pacing, amazing tension and just a fantastic thriller. I've seen it millions of time, but my favourite ever viewing has to be the time I saw the Director's Cut for the first time when it was shown for Hallowe'en many years back. Must be over 10 years ago! After that... E.T. A film that was an important part of my childhood that I still HAVE to stop and watch if it's on telly, even though I already own it on DVD. Amazing film with such a beautiful and uplifting soundtrack. The ending still gets me every time. The Lion King I'd still say that it's my favourite Disney film and seeing the musical was perhaps even better! Rocky A good shout for my favourite film series that just continues to deliver. Creed was also fantastic, but the original will always be my favourite, closely followed by 2. Although 4 has possibly the greatest soundtrack of all time in terms of cheese. Interstellar Wasn't sure what to think of it the first time around, but I adored it after the second viewing. There's a lot to love about this film and although it may not be for everyone, it ticks all the right boxes for what I look for in a film. Mr Nobody This has to be in there just for the ideas behind it. When I was younger, I wanted to write a book where a person reached a crossroads in their life and there were several different "universes" that all resulted from that one decision. This film does that, it's what I wanted to make, but somebody else did it and did it better than I ever could. I've got a huge man crush on Jared Leto, too. Goundhog Day Bill Murray at his best. I love the premise of this film, I love its execution and I love its ending. I've seen it over a billion times, lawl. It's another film from my childhood, but one that I think fondly of and can still watch over and over. The Entire Dark Knight Trilogy I actually disliked The Dark Knight when I initially saw it. I didn't really understand the praise behind it, so I saw it a second and third time and it quickly became one of my favourite films. The entire trilogy is superb, imo. It's redefined what we think of when we talk about super hero/comic book films. They're great thrillers or action films in their own right. The second is an excellent crime drama that just so happens to feature a vigilante. It's a template for other films and tv to use and it has to be the most important film of its kind. Stand By Me It's my favourite type of Sunday afternoon film. I've seen it so many times that I feel as if I know these characters for real, all of them. The ending still manages to choke me up or makes me stop and think every single time I watch it. The real travesty is that River Phoenix's life and career was cut so short, especially after such promise was shown in this gem. Lost in Translation Beautifully filmed and with some superb choices for the soundtrack. I remember when my mind was blown upon hearing The Jesus and Mary Chain for the very first time. Just Like Honey has become one of my favourite all time songs and it was used to utter perfection in this film. But, the acting in this is awesome, as well as the way the dilemmas are pitched with regards to each character. When I watched this film, I guess that I was also at a crossroads in my life due to me being at uni and not really sure what I wanted for the future. About a year later, I met Ine. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind This film is just too fucking good. Not sure there's much more that needs to be said. Alongside that, The Science of Sleep by the same director is also fantastic! Posted March 20, 2016 (edited) My favourite movie people would know about is probably The Matrix. It's genuinely a modern masterpiece, fastastic pure entertainment but with an inteligence behind it, works on many levels. The sequels are good fun too but the original was practically perfect. My other fave that most people won't know is Miracles, also known as the Canton Godfarther and Mr Canton and Lady Rose, a film starring and directed by Jackie Chan. It is a remake of Frank Capra's Lady For A Day, and is a homage to the classic Hollywood era with a cool 20s/30s gangster look. It's got all the action and comedy and heart of a classic Jackie Chan film but with impressive production values for the time in Hong Kong. It's also a bit of a who's who of HK stars with it's cast and cameos. I'd also like to give a mention to another underappreciated film many wouldn't know called Brotherhood Of The Wolf. It's a fantastic French, period, dark, generic hybrid of a movie with mystery, monsters and superb action. I have to second The Science of Sleep that @Fierce_LiNk mentioned. It's awesome. I feel that Scott Pilgrim deserves to be mentioned on the first page of this thread! Other than that, I agree with many of the above, great movies have been mentioned here. Personally, I don't have any favourite movie, nor any favourite dish or favorite travel destination, it's all down to what I want at the moment and can therefore never make a list of the best. Posted March 20, 2016 May I add to my list another; Akira Kurosawa's 'Seven Samurai'. The movie pioneered many film making techniques that are still in use now. Awesome cast of Japanese samurai defending a town against rampaging bandits. Many western/cowboy movies use Kurosawa's themes and style, such as Sergio Leone's Man with no name Trilogy, and the original idea of Star Wars' story seen from the robot/servant's viewpoint comes from his great movies also.
