Finished the final mission of Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition just now. I actually didn't want to do that until I got the collectibles, side-missions, etc out of the way but the story was so engrossing I couldn't stop :D Great game. Deserves a sequel.

 

Will take it slow with unlocking the remaining trophies. After that's done I'll tackle the DLC missions that are included in the definitive version. :)

Platinum for Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition (PS4) get!

 

Again: Great game :)

 

I said I wanted to tackle the DLC but unlocking the final trophies burnt me out on Sleeping Dogs. :hmm: I might play the additional content sometime in the future, though.

I may have had the game since receiving the Wii U for Christmas in 2012 but I've only just seen the credits in the Nintendo Land this week :grin:

I really enjoy most of the attractions but Animal Crossing Sweet Days never really took off between my friends and I, unlike Mario Chase and Luigi's Ghost Mansion, so I never had received a star for it. I put that right by myself the other day and even went about getting the final platinum trophy in Takamaru's Ninja Castle, something I never felt entirely brilliant at :indeed:

 

Anyway, it's a great game that I'm sure I'll still play (particularly given the fact that there are still numerous extra missions to take care of in some of the attractions) but thanks to @Hero\-of\-Time for inspiring me to see the credits :hehe:

 

I also finished off Dino Crisis 2 last night on PS1 :smile:

This sequel was considerably different from the first game but I enjoyed blasting my way through it, stress free :grin: It wasn't challenging at all as I played it on 'easy' difficulty but I just wanted to have fun with the game without fear of becoming frustrated at any points.

It's gonna be a slow month in terms of games completed methinks. I'm playing God Eater Resurrection (PS4) at the moment and the game will be a massive time sink.

 

I decided to pick it up after the latest Monster Hunter game left a sour taste in my mouth. This is another hunting style game but it is far more fast paced than the MH games and it looks to have a decent single player story going for it as well.

 

@Emerald Emblem I've noticed you're playing this too. You enjoying it? I'm gonna guess you are as it features anime women with their knockers practically hanging out. :D Seriously, how the hell does Alisa not pop out of her top? :laughing:

 

I picked up Mario & Sonic at the Rio Olympics (Wii U) on Friday. I was inspired to do so after watching the Nintendo Direct and seeing footage of Mario Sports Superstars.

The game is fantastic! It's so much fun and it's easily the best of the Olympic games they have done. What makes it amazing is that there's ZERO motion control garbage in the game. I can actually just kick back and play this on the GamePad.

 

The footy game is all kinds of fun. You can play a normal 5-a-side type game or mix it up for a Strikers type of gameplay style, with crazy power ups littered on the pitch. This is the same for both the volleyball and the rugby games.

 

There's a stupid amount of content to unlock. These range from flags, characters, music, Mii costumes and stamps. These can be either won by winning tournaments, bought by using coins or rings, or by completing special missions within each of the games on offer.

 

The actual hub world is a beautiful thing to look at. Your Mii runs around the beach and interacts with other Mii's that I assume are from Miiverse. You can talk to these and they will dish out hints and tips or even give you a flag.

 

I've yet to see the credits on the game but i'm certainly loving my time on it. After years of having to faff around with waggling your arms, it's great to finally enjoy and put a lot of time into one of these Olympics games. : peace:

I will borrow Ratchet & Clank (PS4) from a mate today and will start later tonight. I've been wanting to play this since its release and now I don't even have to pay for it :D

Can't Wait.

 

In other news: Hard-mode on Downwell (PS4/PSVita) is kicking my ass...but the game is fun and I want that Platinum :laughing: I will get it!

I am, for the most part, some of these mid-tier Aragami have ridiculous amounts of health and attack patterns, though I'm probably just bad at these hunter games most likely , also you don't question anime logic, just enjoy what the game developers provide. :laughing: :p

The amount of HP some of them have is quite large and they take a fair bit of winding down. Having Alisa on your team works wonders, though. She seems quite happy to provide with support by keeping your burst meter at level 3. You end up doing way more damage that way.

 

Also, it helps if you bring a weapon that the Aragami are weak to. I was just using the one weapon to bring them down but then I started using a sword/gun with elements that the beasts were weak to and was bringing them down much faster.

I did have God Eater 2 preordered but it wasnt getting the most positive buzz before it came out so I cancelled the order. I think I'll probably get it on Steam when it has a decent sale price.

I'm really enjoying it. I've not gotten far - done the Eastern Palace. The graphics and music is lovely together with the traditional Zelda 2D gameplay, what isn't there to dislike?

 

So far it seems a little easy with handholding (I have just come from beating Super Metroid though). Also is it shorter than ALTTP?

As I mentioned earlier, I started Ratched & Clank (PS4) today and my God...it's everything I've ever wanted from a platformer. Can't believe this is my first game of the series. If I had to choose one word to describe my experience so far: Fun!

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns Of The Patriots

Finally got around to playing through the fourth entry in the Metal Gear Solid franchise. 'Snake Eater' turned out to be one of my favourite games of all time, so this had a lot to live up to and in many respects it's a worthy follow up. The game plays like a Metal Gear greatest hits, taking different elements from the previous entries - stealth sections in the jungle, a return to some familiar locales and fast paced boss battles, the games environments are incredibly detailed and offer up a number of different routes and ways to play.

 

Playing through all the entries over the space of the last couple of months has allowed me to see how the series have evolved over time and how each new entry offered up set pieces and interaction that would have been impossible in earlier games. MGS4 really highlights how far the controls have come from the clunky PS1 days to the smooth and streamlined experience that is now on offer. The game still suffers from some of the problems that plagued the earlier games though, with the blatant misogyny - especially in the cutscenes - still the biggest black spot. Characters and dialogue are still as over the top and farcical as ever but apart from being overlong in places they never really outstay their welcome.

 

One of main oddities with MGS4 is the way that the game handles its installation. Rather than install the entire game in one long go, it splits the install up in 5 pieces. Instead of waiting an hour for the game to fully install upon first launching, you instead wait a few minutes for it to install Act 1 and then once you have finished playing through Act 1, you wait another minute or so for Act 2 to install. It's not too much of a problem as you're never waiting around for long but its really strange and certainly breaks up the action a bit too much.

 

Overall the game doesn't ever reach the heady heights of 'Snake Eater' but it comes close on a number of occasions. For the majority of the game I had an absolute blast playing it and it does what the Metal Gear franchise does best - tense, heart pounding stealth and ridiculous, action packed boss battles. The only let down for me was the final boss battle which uses a completely different combat system to the rest of the game and the battle is a sluggish chore instead of the wonderful set piece it could have been. It's a fantastic game overall though and a fitting end to the Metal Gear story and I look forward to checking in with Big Boss in MGSV when I get a PS4 but until then I'm going to tackle The Swapper on Wii U.

I did figure that out, the problem I have is some weapon types I'm hopeless with against certain Aragami it'd be helpful against, the Hammer is my worst weapon, so I try and go elemental advantage rather than weapon.

I know I'm a few years late to the party, but I finally played this fantastic platformer.

 

I was surprised at how different it played from the original trilogy. The older games are fast-paced, regardless of who you play as, but this DK actually feels like a heavy, strong and clunky ape, I kinda like it. There's also the wonkier jumps and different roll physics, but I eventually got used to those. They make the Time Trials into very tricky things.

 

A few other stray thoughts:

 

  • I find it more difficult than any of the previous DKCs. For me, that's a plus.
  • Retro Studios are really good at creating immersive and compelling environments, regardless of genre.
  • The bosses pretty much sucked, including the anti-climactic final boss. The only exception is the chicken, who's one the funniest things I've seen in the game (and had cool music).
  • Ruins was the worst World, whereas Factory was the best.
  • Other than Aquatic Ambience and Palm Tree Groove, the remixes didn't do much for me. The soundtrack should've stuck more to jazzy tunes.
  • I wish the Golden Temple had more levels.

I bothered to find all of the puzzle pieces, but I haven't completed all the time trials or mirror levels yet. I'm currently at 121%, and will be completing the missing stuff very sporadically.

Hard to say as I know LTTP like the back of my hand and can probably knock it out in a day. I wouldn't say ALBW is that long on your first play through, though.

 

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns Of The Patriots

 

Like you, I adore MGS3 and it's easily the best of the series. MGS4 does hold a special place in my heart, though. It's pure fan service at it's best. Some of the cutscenes, such as I am lightning the rain transformed, Jonny and Meryl holding off the Frogs, Crawling through the microwave corridor and the battle of the Metal Gears are simply amazing.

 

Shame you didn't care for the last battle. I personally love it. It just feels so raw, with both guys just going at it, all the while the music changes to represent the various games in the series. Fantastic stuff :love:

Great to see you enjoyed it. You don't have a Wii U, do you? Shame, if not, as I think Tropical Freeze easily surpasses Returns, in both level design and obviously music. Dave Wise is in God mode with some of the stuff he made for Tropical Freeze. :bowdown:

This was a console generation that I skipped, due to life situation (no fixed address, no certainty of TV, etc). It was lucky enough that I had enough time to play Returns on the good ol' Wii.

I swear to God, at one point in my life I will play every MGS game (main series) back to back...Probably the most influential gaming series of my life. I mean, the games helped me so much with learning English :D

Like you, I adore MGS3 and it's easily the best of the series. MGS4 does hold a special place in my heart, though. It's pure fan service at it's best. Some of the cutscenes, such as I am lightning the rain transformed, Jonny and Meryl holding off the Frogs, Crawling through the microwave corridor and the battle of the Metal Gears are simply amazing.

 

Shame you didn't care for the last battle. I personally love it. It just feels so raw, with both guys just going at it, all the while the music changes to represent the various games in the series. Fantastic stuff :love:

 

I still enjoyed the final battle eventually, but it was jarring going from the smooth and quick controls to a more rigid system. I died a few times before I really got the hang of them so it was frustrating for a little while. In terms of the set up and the music it was perfect though.

 

Also forgot to mention what a great character Sunny is, her appearances in the mission briefings are fantastic.

A while back I played through all 3 Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan! games on the DS.

 

For those utterly bewildered, they are rhythm games that exclusively use the touch screen. The object of the games is to touch icons in time to the music, the more precise you are, the more points you score.

What's that? It's suddenly looking very familiar?

 

I'm sure a lot of you are thinking, "Hang on, that's Elite Beat Agents, isn't it?" Yes, that's because it basically is. Elite Beat Agents is a kind of westernised version of this game made for us lot. It's part of the same series.

 

"Osu! Tatake! Ouendan!" and it's sequel "Moero! Nekketsu Rhythm Damashii Osu! Tatake! Ouendan!" (Bloody hell...) both never made it out of Japan, because let's face it. They're very Japanese. The songs are all Japanese, obviously, and I'm not surprised they just made a different game for us lot.

 

Ouendan! follows a professional cheerleading squad as they go around inspiring people to overcome daily life challenges, such as trying to get a promotion, studying for college exams or growing to the size of a building and punching an equally titanic mouse in the face. You know, the usual stuff.

 

Anyway, the gameplay is great, simple to get to, but the higher difficulties can really challenge you. It takes no prisoners.

 

I'm sure many of you DS owners played Elite Beat Agents. And if you were ever craving more of that. You should try and get your hands on these Japanese versions, you definitely don't need to know Japanese to enjoy them. Just don't expect many songs you recognise. Although they are very catchy.

 

And if you haven't played Elite Beat Agents yet. GO PLAY ELITE BEAT AGENTS, IT'S BRILL!

First up, Yoshi's Wooly World!

OH MY GOD IT'S SO FLUFFY I'M GOING TO DIE!!!

 

 

So... yeah... This game is super kawaii desu neeeee! In case, you know, have a heart of stone and can't already tell.

 

Did you know that it's a pretty gosh darn good game too? You do? Oh bloody hell, you're no fun :heh:

 

Ok, fine. So I suppose I'm gonna have to explain why it's good then, hrumph!

In short, it's a well made platformer with lots of creative levels that make novel use of the adorable art style for cool gameplay mechanics that unravel around you. Levels fold, unzip and do lots of neat stuff. Hidden secrets and goodies are cleverly (perhaps too cleverly?) hidden away for you to find and the game has a bit of bite to it (though naturally, the game is a ton easier in co-op since you can cheese almost everything).

 

It's also super chill, to the point where you could easily fall asleep while playing (and not out of boredom; it's just mellow man!). Kind of an odd vibe really; especially when the music suddenly takes a turn for the odd when you get into the castles and you inevitably burst out laughing because it's just... what!?

 

 

From eerie to porn in 60 seconds!

 

 

So yeah! The first really honest to goodness good Yoshi game (without any caveats) since Yoshi's Island. Not bad going there! Not much more to really say, it's a good time, but try not to play too much at once or you might die either by cuteness overload, or from the comatose state induced by the sheer chill factor.

This game is the same as Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire but with prettier graphics, the same crappy framerate and lack of S3D from X/Y and absolutely nothing fixed about Gen 3. So incredibly disappointing that I only just recently mustered the strength to finish it a few months ago, despite having a roughly 80% complete save file for over a year...

 

... only to find a completely rubbish and pointless additional "episode" at the end that desperately tries to rip off Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Red/Blue Rescue Team but ends up falling flat on its face.

 

About the only really cool new addition is the Super Secret Bases (it does indeed earn the right to that ridiculous moniker). As such, it deserves an actual screenshot, which I will now present to you below...

Otherwise, it's Gen 3. The same incredibly boring Pokemon game where absolutely nothing of interest happens for around 80% of the game, then you see a cool monster (or a lame one, if you bought the wrong version), then nothing happens for the rest of the game. It's also the same game which has over 350 Pokemon (now over 700), yet every single team at the end looks exactly the same because there is absolutely no variety in wild Pokemon whatsoever. Oh, and of course, because this is a very interesting remake, all the trainers you fight have all of the same incredibly boring and predictable Pokemon as in the original versions of Gen 3! What's that? You thought that they would go ahead and have them use the massive variety of new Pokemon now available to them from subsequent games? Aww... that's cute...

 

Oh and post game? You're wondering if they added anything fun to do at the end of the game this time?

In short, it's an incredibly disappointing remake of the worst mainline Pokemon games ever made. Kinda fitting I suppose.

These American Kirby boxarts sure get some strange typefaces these days

 

 

Kirby Planet Robobot is one hell of a palette clenser! I've already raved about this game before, but suffice to say, it's one of the best entries in the series. Fixing all of the issues I had with Kirby Triple Deluxe, gone are the slow and unskippable cutscenes, the frequent and lengthy loading times and in its place is a (literal) rocket boost of nitro! This game is fast, fun and fantastic!

Mario Strikers sure got weird all of a sudden...

 

 

The game keeps a brisk pace throughout and begs to be speedran! The levels are inventive and make even better use of plane switching than its predecessor. The copy abilities are brilliant and inventive (even though Poison is a blatant knockoff of Water from Kirby's Adventure Wii) and it's... well, it's Kirby! Kirby with a massive and stupidly awesome mech!

The mech is a well thought out and very welcome addition. Taking on a similar role as the animal buddies in Kirby's Dreamland 3, the mech basically gives you access to an entirely unique moveset for almost every ability in the game; and it's stupidly powerful (but limited in mobility). Naturally, this means that it's perfect for smashing baddies in the face, which means that it's awesome.

 

The game is also chock full of an insane amount of references to past games, little touches and bits and bobs that just simply exude love, joy and happiness. It also has an extremely morbid story! Which you may actually miss the nuances of quite easily if you don't pay attention (The game's Miiverse page has a cool Behind The Scenes section that I recommend checking out once you've 100%'d the game; but not before! Don't even dare ruin it for yourself!)

 

And that pretty much sums the game up, without spoiling anything to boot! It's another amazing Kirby game that manages to one up its predecessor. About the only negative I can ding against it really is that the bosses aren't quite as spectacular as in Triple Deluxe and that it leans a bit too heavily on its assets as well; making for some overly familiar encounters at times (you'll recognise a lot of things lifted straight out of TD here). But that's the nature of the beast when it comes to making a sequel on the same engine, on the same console, within 2 years.

 

As much as I have loved the newest Kirby trilogy, I'm hoping that the next mainline Kirby game really shakes things up. I think 3 games in the vein of Return to Dreamland/Kirby's Adventure Wii is enough now. I'm ready for something totally new (time for a true 3D Kirby? Kirby's 3D Challenge is a cruelly short tease here!)

Yup! It's everyone's favourite black and white Metroid game! It's Metroid 2!

 

This game was actually a pretty big leap forward for the series. Gone are the cavalcade of copy/paste rooms (ok, there's a few still there, but not that many; it's actually very completable without a guide!), gone are the lengthy and nonsensical passwords (Justinbailey never made sense) and gone is the totally non-linear design (wait? Hang on! Didn't Metroid Fusion do that first? It didn't!? OH MY!!). Instead we have a Metroid game with a clear goal from the outset.

That's right, you gotta KILL 'EM ALL! And the way you go is clear as well! You gotsta get to the bottom, by KILLING THEM ALL!

Which makes this go away and allows you to decend further, where you can KILL THEM ALL EVEN MORE!

 

 

It's actually refreshingly straightforward and it feels pretty satisfying to know that you're distinctly making progress and heading the right way. Watching that Metroid counter drop as well makes Samus feel cathartic on the inside as you head towards your ultimate goal...

 

Oh, BTW. This game also introduced save points to the series, as well as a ton of items that are now series staples, including the Space Jump, High Jump Boots, Spider Ball, Spazar and more! Hi 5 Game Boy!

 

It then seems absolutely baffling that for a game that went out of its way to introduce save points, to go out of its way to be the first handheld entry into the series, that it actually is incredibly stingy when it comes to placing those save points! Some sections can go on for over an hour without a single save point in sight! On a Game Boy! Before the days of Sleep Mode even! It's mad!

 

Otherwise, the game is thankfully much more forgiving than its predecessor, but the dearth of save points really hurts it as a handheld title.

 

The controls are slow and floaty, but they fit this game's slow pace. And the slow pace is a smart choice for a game designed with the original brick Game Boy's spinach green screen in mind. The Spider Ball doesn't work as well in 2D as it does in 3D though and always feels a bit clunky to use. This Metroid is generally low on action and heavy on the exploration side of things; again, a smart choice given the hardware, but the popcorn enemies and lack of bosses outside of the Metroids themselves (which all generally play out the same way; though they do evolve into stronger forms as the game progresses) mean that it feels a bit lacking as an action game.

 

One thing that is absolutely baffling though is the fact that missiles do not drop, ever (with the sole exception of one single enemy type that appears late in the game, but that's beside the point; YOU GET THE IDEA, GEEZE!). Considering that missiles are the only thing that hurt Metroids and that they can only be replenished by finding missile stations hidden throughout the caverns (and of course they're very hard to find and require a lot of backtracking, of course they do...), this is a problem...

 

Overall it's an interesting entry in the series and one that definitely stands apart from all of the others. I actually do like it for what it is, despite its issues. Which is why I went and played it again right afterwards!

A game so nice, I played it twice

 

 

AM2R (Another Metroid 2 Remake) is a fan made remake of Metroid 2 with a very catchy title that rolls off the tongue nicely. You've probably heard all about it recently since NOA decided to be a bunch of doodoo heads and issue a DMCA to the game's creators; asking sites to not offer it for download, but in case you don't know about it...

It's a lot less faithful than the shot implies, but it's just as pretty

 

 

... it's basically to Metroid 2 what Metroid Zero Mission was to Metroid 1. A brand new game, loosely based on the original Metroid 2 (though it doesn't deviate quiiiiitttee as far as MZM, it's a very close comparison). It's so well made that it could easily pass as an official Nintendo product!

 

It takes the same setting, story and general level design from the Game Boy original and crafts a new game based on the gameplay of Metroid Zero Mission; complete with everything that game introduced into the series, with a few new tricks thrown in for good measure.

 

They've added brand new bosses, completely new areas, new music, and... well... just tons of new awesomeness! It's absolutely brilliant and an absolute joy for any fan of Metroid! I highly, highly recommend it to everyone!

 

(Though it does still have the same issue with popcorn enemies. Nothing puts up a fight outside of the Metroids and the new bosses, which is shame. But hey! Those Metroids and bosses are awesome! So it's cool.)

In Metroid II, the Spider Ball gave a wonderful sense of freedom of movement. It doesn't simply remove obstacles (like walls and mountains), it also changes how one navigates the map (like going down pits slowly, or using the ceiling in certain passages). By comparison, its 3D incarnation is more limited in scope, only allowing for specific puzzle/platforming segments (even if they're fun).

 

I agree with the rest of the review, though. Metroid II is a very underrated game.

I'm talking more about the controls really. Metroid 2 (and AM2R) tend to get confused about which surface you want to go up and which direction you want to move in when you're trying to use the spider ball. Metroid Prime's implementation is a lot more elegant in that regard though, and moving around with it (even omnidirectionally) is a lot more fluid, responsive and reliable than its 2D counterpart.

 

But yeah, you're right in saying that the spider ball is much more limited in scope in the 3D games (that's the trade off I suppose). It's actually quite shocking that they give it to you so early in Metroid 2, considering how much it blows the level design wide open (likewise, Space Jump also comes into play quite early, considering that it pretty much removes the need for platforming altogether). I thought that was a really brave move, but it works out very well and goes a long way towards encouraging the exploration aspect of the game; which is definitely its strongest point. Goes to show how the focus was moved away from action; which again, I feel was a good choice for the hardware they were making the game for originally.

Since replacing my old 3DS with a New 3DS earlier this week, I feeling like I'm ready to wrap myself up in a cosy Nintendo blanket for the next few months and put some time into a few quality titles in the run up to Christmas :hehe:

 

2016 has definitely been a strange year for me (not least my newborn disrupting my gaming flow :heh:) but I've at least put a dent into the considerable backlog over the first two thirds of the year. Some of it has felt like time well spent but I've also played a few forgettable titles and one absolute stinker :blank:

 

I usually preach on here for people to play what they want to play and not to force yourself through games you don't enjoy because there's plenty of great games out there to play instead but I have found myself persevering through several games in the last 8 months just to get them finished and out of the way. I don't regret clearing up some of my barely touched games of the last decade or more but it can be tiring and I feel like I now deserve to treat myself to the indulgence of my Nintendo catalogue and dig even deeper into those titles that deserve to be explored :hehe:

 

I'm currently in the middle of Doom on PS1 so I do plan to finish it but that could be my last non-Nintendo experience of 2016.

Just finished playing through The Swapper on Wii U, a really fantastic game. The swapper mechanic provides some really intricate puzzle challenges and the narrative unfolds really well. The presentation of the game is flawless with everything working together to create an eerie sci-fi atmosphere reminiscent of 'Alien'. A lot of indie games can be full of great ideas but rough around the edges, something like 'Never Alone' is so utterly charming but is let down by poor programming and design decisions, but 'The Swapper' is an almost flawless experience.

 

I also played through a free Steam game called Moirai. It was a fun little game and only takes about 10 minutes to play through. I'd thoroughly recommend you guys check it out but don't look up anything about the game before playing it, the install is only about 25mb so it's really not much of a time or data commitment and the game is all the better for not knowing anything going in.
