I really hope for Zelda launch title as I think that a lof of people who don't "love" Nintendo would buy it. Mario will not do it.

 

Also, Mario and Zelda should be OK at launch, because even if people don't buy both game at the same time, they will buy it with time, they will not make any losses on these two games.

 

After that they can bring other titles more slowly in, but I think that they should bring the big games a bit earlier so that they build a big isntall base quickly.

I think Mario has much wider appeal though and is probably the smarter choice as a launch title, IMO.

 

Also, Mario and Zelda should be OK at launch, because even if people don't buy both game at the same time, they will buy it with time, they will not make any losses on these two games.

 

It's not just about software sales numbers though, it's also the opportunity to have a big spike in hardware sales with the second game coming out later in the year and all the marketing and advertising to come from that. As a gamer I would hate both as launch titles, I'd much prefer a nice gap between both to space them out a bit.

Yeah, but Nintendo fans will buy it anyway, but THIS Zelda could be tempting for lot of people who decided to skip Nintendo this generation.

It could bring different type of gamers on board at the same time. Also, Nintendo fans who skipped it this generation, could see that Nintendo really means it this time, so they could come on board this time. It's all theoretical of course.

 

And if they bring some big third party titles quickly, than of course they can make the windows between their games bigger.

Yeah I don't know why but I never imagined Zelda having a big appeal outside of gaming circles (unlike Mario who is at least well known/recognised and easy enough to jump into). I know the games do well, but it's never felt like Zelda would push new people to a console. I don't know how to explain it...

Because this is absolutely true.

It's much easier to get into Mario than it is to get into Zelda.

It's much more of a time commitment.

I'd hope that there's a multiplayer game ready for launch. They need something to promote the benefits of the system, hope the online and community functions will play. I cant see anything other than Splatoon, MK or Smash doing that.

 

Plus those games keep giving unlike the single player games that leave a droughty kind of feeling.

I think having a free to play MMO at launch would be smart as well for similar reasons. Something like the rumoured Marvel Heroes console release, Neverwinter or even FFXIV if they want a full on subscription MMO thats actually still going pretty well.

I don't know if having Super Mario Mexico and Zelda Breath of the Wild on day 1 is a good idea. There's something to be said for spacing out your releases so that they don't cannibalise each other (people only have so much money to spend at a time after all).

 

I reckon they'd be best served by having Zelda Breath of the Wild on day 1, alongside Mario Kart 8.5, Splatoon and their inevitable New Concept game that fills the Wii Sports/Nintendo Land role. That's enough for day 1. Have SMMexico within the first 6 months or at around Xmas time alongside Retro's new game and space out the other ports like Pikmin 4, Smash Bros Switch and Animal Crossing Wii U Switch over those first 6 months. Give themselves and their 3rd parties a bit of breathing room instead of throwing too much at people on day 1.

Haha, just had a quick self joke at the thought of a new console launched with all the games it will ever get on day one.

 

Could that actually be a good thing? Having all of the next 4-5 years offerings from Nintendo on day one.

I think it's sad day when games like FIFA and CoD are considered more as 'System Sellers' then games like Zelda and Metroid.

 

But I do believe that Nintendo are at least trying to target the console at the right people this time around. This is based off of the age of people in the switch teaser.

 

I think Nintendo's biggest problem is getting the 'younger generation' of gamers excited over it's first party titles again.

 

Someone who I work with, who is ~10 years younger than me has never heard of games like F-Zero, Earthbound or Metroid. When I try to explain what these games are, and I'll use F-Zero as an example, I'll say "it's like Wipeout", which he knows.

 

For as big as Nintendo are and for as many franchises they own, if it's not one of the 'big 3' (Mario, Zelda, Pokemon), people who have never owned a Nintendo console wont know what they are, and this is something I believe Nintendo need to address.

It is what it is and not unique to games. The biggest grossing films of last year were Star Wars, Jurassic World, Avengers, Inside Out and Furious 7 and they're all fine films, but hardly the best the medium can do (Inside Out at least tries a bit more, but still) and other than one are all sequels.

 

(collective) You can sit around complaining about how populist art isn't as good, but there's more reasons for it being popular than the fact its popular. Hell I bought COD to socialise with friends and I would probably be so inclined with FIFA if I didn't find football boring as all get out.

 

And its petty but COD and FIFA aren't "considered" system sellers. They are system sellers ;) Same way Mario would push it to some people, but the reach is smaller and that's why a breadth of titles are needed from a variety of publishers.

Agree wit this. To continue the comparison with film, I consider a lot of the big AAA titles in the industry like summer action films, big budget entertaining popcorn epics that you soon forget by the time the next one comes around but sell a huge amount. It's the smarter, more charming films or in this case games that stick in my mind a lot longer, but sadly none of those would be considered system sellers, at least on the competition.

Although I'd want it, i think Mario and Zleda at launch would be way too much.

 

I also don't think they need to appeal to the wider public at launch, not only is it no the time they'd probably buy a machine, I don't think they need to. Zelda at launch and more traditional gamer games would appeal to gamers and launch day buyers of hardware; save mario, mario kart and other wider appealing games for christmas period where families and kids would want it more.

 

Also, although a strong laugh line-up is vital, I think a steady stream of games is far far far more important than day one games. Strong games every month leading up to a huge christmas with mario, Mario kart and something like Metroid would be just perfect from a strategy perspective I reckon.

How you describe AAA there is exactly what I thought of NSM3DW. The only level I can really remember was the one at the beginning where they're showing off the cat suits.

Nope, don't remember this being in it at all. Meanwhile, I can remember every single level in Mario 64.

 

A big part of this I think was that SM3DW had no theme of its own - the level themes were mostly taken from the traditional 2D Mario games.

That's the exact reaction several friends of mine had about 10 years ago. The only reason they knew of F-Zero and Metroid was because of me. It's nothing new, those two were never system sellers (though the Metroid Prime series came close to that benchmark, I admit).

 

Let's face it, Nintendo has a handful of widely-known IPs, but the rest is known only to dedicated videogame fans. As is the norm with the majority of videogame series in general, anyway.

 

(Also, Earthbound didn't even exist in Europe before Smash Bros. Even for my generation, it's obscure. It's a really bad example of a series that could get people excited for a console).
