amiibo (NFC)

From Nintendo France

Wii U had suffered the past a lack of games a year, with widely spaced outlets. The beginning of the year 2014 was also quiet, what will happen after the release of Mario Kart 8?

Many games release will be formalized at the show at E3, but you already know that we out action game Bayonnetta 2. By the end of the year, there will also be the new Skylanders, the new Disney Infinity, Sonic Boom, Watch Dogs or Zelda Hyrule Warriors. And on the output side of games produced by Nintendo, there will obviously be the fighting game Super Smash Bros.

E3 is also an opportunity to show the use of NFC technology [used in Skylanders and Disney Infinity, allowing the use of real objects - here, figurines - in video games] in Nintendo consoles . The NFC will be used in the Wii U version of Super Smash Bros.

Mon dieu! Mon pauvre portefeuille.

I was expecting that.

Yup. I think most of us on here called it and it makes perfect sense given the amount of characters that are in the games.

I wonder if this means if DLC does happen, will the characters be sold as the figures?

I must be for some kind of seperate mode.

Maybe an alternative way to carry around your customized character, because it will save your character's moveset and whatnot into you figurine. Then you go to a tournament/friend's house, scan that fucker and presto.

Na, I think it'll be more like how Pokémon Rumble U works.

Since we know you can customise moves, you save the customisations to the figure. You can then take your figure around to a friend's and scan it when you play. You have your customisations.

Such a boring application, basically just a glorified memory card.

If that's really how they plan on using the NFC (what serebii suggested), it shows how much they want to take advantage of current Wii U owners as they know hardcore Nintendo fans would buy a pile of shit with the word 'Nintendo' on it.

To clarify, these are going to be figurines that I'll need to keep around in my house? I mean jesus, the onboard memory thing on the Wii remote..now that makes sense. But if I'm supposed to carry these figurines AND a controller around with me it's just so silly. I don't agree with the 'it looks cool comment'; they just won't fit in to the majority of households unless kids are present. I live with my girlfriend and I don't think she'll be too happy with a figurines lying about, it will make the place look ridic.

That said, if this is for some kind of special mode, then it's a decent shout. But for now, I want character move sets and preferences to be saved onto the Wii-mote.

Nintendo doing exactly what all of us expected? Cést impossible!

Anyway, I expect these figurines to be used in two ways. Firstly you'll have character figurines that will save your custom movesets and stats and then you'll have trophy figurines which will act more or less exactly the same way that the Kid Icarus Uprising AR Cards did...

Hope you guys have lots of space for your new toys! (And a wallet big enough to match!)

I'm surprised I expected them to drip feed the figurines. A new major character every month or something like that (packaged in a set with 2 or 3 minor characters)

Bingo! The kids!... Not everything has to be marketed to the 20-something year old male and his girlfriend. :indeed:

Chill out dude. Tbh can kids even afford a Wii U? As long as it's not necessary to unlock stuff and as long as the wiimote solution isn't replaced.

Its just... the moaning. Most kids have parents who can afford a Wii U.

With that logic, why market anything on any console or device to kids. Kids can't afford to buy anything as they're kids and don't have steady jobs

I'll be surprised if this takes off in any significant way to be honest.

It's not moaning, I just don't see why Serebii's example is any better than the wii-mote solution they already have. I also don't think it's a very sound business model; why buy 3 or more figurines if you only need 1 to transfer a character? Or could was @Serebii suggesting that you could only transfer any character data if you had that specific figurine (apologies if I misunderstood that, Joe).

The other interesting factor is whether they use it in some kind of bonus mode or alternatively, unlocking characters. Although I'm not hugely keen on the latter.

Either way, I like NFC and think it's a sound idea, but I don't want it shoehorned into games. A ground up approach can work, but forcing it into games can go either way.

Really?

Skylanders took off big time, despite this being something completely new. Or, well, I recall it was some kind of Spyro tie-in from the start, but that franchise was long-since dead. Plus it's solely targeted at kids.

Nintendo have a huge library of well-known characters. Grown men are salivating over the concept of having "toys" in their bookshelves! Only the Wii U itself talks against this taking off.

This is just speculation, if that is the use then maybe it wont really have any real impact, but we don't know it is for sure yet.

Plus NFC is supposedly used in several games.

This could be quite a boring use of it, but hopefully there's a game built around it too.

It sure did. But that doesn't mean something else like it that comes along later will too.

Out of interest, how big did Skylanders get? I've never really heard of it but do the young kids love it?

Skylanders is HUGE. The amount of shelf space it commands in supermarkets and game stores is truely impressive.

I'm sure I heard something like Skylanders has outsold Barbie!

... now whether that was lifetime (damn impressive), or just over a year (far less impressive), I'm not sure?

Don't people realise that holding your character's individual data is exactly what the Skylanders and Disney Infinity figures do? And they've been a massive success. Yes, I hope there's another game built around NFC too, but to see them introduced in Smash Bros, which will probably be an optional feature like Pokemon Rumble U, is a good thing in my opinion and will differentiate it from the 3DS version.

What nintendo have copied the successful system in place that other third parties have done? my god they've finally tried to catch up with the crowd and emulate a successful thing, the internet must be ablaze with praise for them

wait this is the internet, nintendo do what people ask and everyone hates it

this is a "hardcore" popular game with a huge fan base, its now copying skylanders/disney infinity (exactly right down the figure memory) aaaaaaaannnnnd nobody is happy

what really did anyone expect from NFC with nintendo? let alone any company? they've copied whats been done and worked? did you expect full blown action figures? what seriously did people expect from NFC on a game console?
