It's just people on the Internet who feel it's all about the conference who did not. Shame that guy is misreporting the news. You're missing the point, completely. Okay, here's a starting point. Imagine 1000 journalists live blogging a conference in a room full of publishers and developers. They are watching a conference when a company X are detailing their upcoming plans and making some big announcements. It's very easy for Company X to directly communicate their strategy to these people, who can spread the word instantly through twitter/websites etc. This is BEFORE they've even got to playing the games. It's organised and easy to get the message across. It generates excitement/hyped but also a message to the industry. With last year's direct, did Nintendo make it clear what their message was? Most people saw it as a Wii sequel machine. Even to this day people are saying 'what are Nintendo doing'. I listened to a recent NWR podcast and they were all saying that they loved Nintendo's show floor experience last year but they left E3 with no clue what Nintendo were doing/thinking with the Wii U. Of course, i'm not saying the same will apply this year, as last year could be an example of Nintendo experimenting, whilst they 'fine tune' those decisions this year. It seems more multidimensional this year, which is great news. The interesting stuff will come from how they can show that they are fixing their reputation with western gamers and how they plan to do it. Smash and MK will help with the Nintendo crowd but they can seriously sell another 10-15 Wii U's with some forward thinking. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
Posted April 29, 2014 Last year's E3 direct was filled with games and no extra fluff, I genuinely thought they showed off more than they could in a presentation. The pleasing thing about all this is that Nintendo seem very invested in this year's E3 as they seem to be going all out (lack of conference aside), let's hope that means they're confident in what they have to show and announce. I listened to a recent NWR podcast and they were all saying that they loved Nintendo's show floor experience last year but they left E3 with no clue what Nintendo were doing/thinking with the Wii U. They're releasing great games for their new HD console, that's probably what Nintendo were doing/thinking. Really really doesn't need to be any more complicated than that. Posted April 29, 2014 How are Nintendo 'wasting' E3? It sounds like they're going to have a bigger presence than ever! A presence that is even more beneficial for the consumer at home, thanks to things like Treehouse Live. Posted April 29, 2014 Although I like a stage show, it does sound as though Nintendo realises a normal Nintendo Direct is not quite enough for E3. I honestly think the Digital Event will be well-scripted, funny and entertaining. With Zelda almost confirmed and so many hints dropped about Metroid, as long as the actual games themselves look good, this could be an awful lot better than many of their live shows. Posted April 29, 2014 Hopefully their booth is as amazing as last year's too. One look at that would have convinced anyone they were far from giving up on E3. Posted April 29, 2014 Hmm, not bad. No conference, but at least they're expanding on what they had last year. Posted April 29, 2014 How is that logical? You do realise that the amount they showed in the E3 Direct last year is on par with what they'd show in a conference. It was just shorter because they didn't waste 10+ minutes on gameplay demos, trendy guest stars and pauses for applause. When I say enough I mean nothing press conference worthy and I think Nintendo feel like that also hence the no conference. My view is that the traditional conference is getting a bit stale and pointless, unless you're going to unleash new hardware onto the scene. As a way of showcasing yourself as a company, it is still pretty much the strongest and most effective method there is. Like it or not, E3 is attended by more than just hardcore fans and specialist press and by not having a stage presence it will easily get overlooked. When you consider that Ubisoft and other smaller companies still have them, Nintendo's approach seems to be very narrow minded. Big showy events are part of the TV business, film business and many others. There might well be more effective ways of reaching out to fans but these are trade shows.
