Extra Life 2014

Recommended Posts

Once again, we're looking for ideas for this year's Extra Life, which is happening on the 25th October.

Last year our streaming was kind of disappointing due to technical difficulties, so this year we want to make something that's entertaining to watch, as well as making a fuck-tonne of money FOR THE KIDS.

We're planning to have a schedule of events, so people know when to tune in to watch what they're (hopefully) looking forward to watching. Each event will feature no less than 2 brave, enigmatic bros, featuring witty exchanges and ample joviality.

So far we have the following ideas for scheduled events (links for examples of potential radness):

Horror game for Halloween (currently Left 4 Dead)

Some sort of tournament

Race to completion (race to see who can finish a reasonably short game first)

And generally just some scheduled games in a sort of "let's play" style.

Any feedback would be appreciated. Would a schedule make you more likely to watch? Any suggestions for games/events you'd like to see?

Not meaning to come across as a critic but Extra Life is an Americo-centrique charity isn't it? Is there a reason you guys didn't support something a little closer to home? Or am I completely misunderstanding?

You pick a specific hospital to back and when we started a few UK hospitals were on the list (I originally chose Bristol IIRC). Recently, they've had to drop UK and Australian hospitals due to the laws in those countries (need to be a registered charity etc which is apparently a bit of a mission).

To compensate, they've highlighted the hospitals in America/Canada that offer specialist treatment not available elsewhere, where children from all over the world treated. Those are the hospitals we'll be supporting until the UK becomes available again.

It was on a recent tour of Boston Children's Hospital that the idea for what I am sharing with you today first came to me. My colleague at BCH was explaining how many kids from over 100 countries are brought to their hospital for life-saving treatment and that in many cases their families can't even begin to afford sending their child overseas to the United States for treatment. A little more digging and I found out that SickKids in Toronto treats thousands of kids from all over the world, as does Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C. These are just three of many North American hospitals with a huge outreach for kids from all over the world.

There was a way, after all, for Extra Lifers to participate and get the same satisfaction other Extra Lifers get, knowing their fundraising efforts will benefit kids close to where they live.

This year, we are adding 3 new choices listed when you pick your hospital for Extra Life 2013. Selecting any of these options will ensure that you are funding only the international efforts at these outstanding hospitals. They can be found at the bottom of the hospital selection list and are prefixed with "INT'L":

INT'L Boston Children's - in Boston, Mass.

INT'L SickKids - in Toronto, Ontario

INT'L Children’s National Medical Center - in Washington, D.C.

If you’d like to learn more about these hospitals before selecting one to support, here are links to their respective websites.

http://www.childrenshospital.org/

http://www.sickkids.ca/

http://www.childrensnational.org/

By selecting these special options, you will be ensuring that you want the funds that you raise to help to fund international efforts, and those funds will be directed accordingly within their hospitals.

We hope to add more choices for Extra Lifers outside North America both in 2013 and beyond. Until we do so, we always appreciate your frank and honest feedback and ideas. Please understand that Team Extra Life remains committed to growing and enhancing the Extra Life experience for ALL PLAYERS regardless of borders or language.

Thanks for getting back to me. Interesting how they have aimed to tackle that but a shame that things had to change.

I'll keep any eye out for what's going on (more likely through FB). Do you have any idea where you're likely to be hosting it? I'll see if I can use some of my contacts to help, might even be able to lend you some kit if you're lucky ;-)

We're still deciding on the location. It will likely be close to Manchester or not far from London.

Not trying to be funny or anything but we kind of do it because 5 years ago we were all extremely interested in doing our bit for the fantastic work that Children's Miracle Network Hospital does around the world. These days whilst yes due to various issues they have not been able to donate money directly to UK hospitals if you don't pick a hospital the money just gets put into the world Children's Miracle Network Hospital pot. Who would ever say that's a bad thing?! It's a weird thing of you to ask....like if someone told you they were running a marathon and then someone said you shouldn't be running for them you should be running for X instead...

Also you never know where the money could truly help you out one day. Having met my Canadian girlfriend I started donating my money to a local Sick Kids hospital and now 3 years later one of her kid cousin's who I've never met ended up in that very same hospital so it's nice to know that the $3000 we've raised in recent years can one day impact people we know along with all those countless other suffering children.

What contacts do you mean? We do this for the fun and to be part of zeitgeist that comes from being part of the Extra Life community without having any contacts. Also unless your friends with any of our team specifically how would you keep a track of it via facebook? Also we don't tend to post till you know it's actually happening and we want sponsors....

He's friends with me on Facebook.

At least I hope that's him, otherwise I'd look quite the fool.

@flameboy - I have contacts in telecoms and internet infrastructure as it's part of my business. I actually asked you a totally innocent question based on the information that I had about Extra Life and I'm glad Goafer answered before you did. Don't treat me like a dick or call me weird because I don't know anything about what you're doing.

I'm trying to be supportive through understanding why you guys are doing what you do as, from the way you post about it, you assume that I should know what this is all about already. Being defensive and preachy is putting me right off.

This feels like something I would enjoy doing for charity, any chance you guys have space for more people? :p

We're already struggling to find a place with enough space to house the current lineup!

Unless we find somewhere big to host it or have 2 seperate events, although that would divide the viewers (what little we have!) and we're trying to build an audience this year.

That's where contacts and things would be useful. We could really do with someone to help promote it or provide a place to host it. It's great doing it in a living room and all, but a third party venue would make it feel a bit more official. I don't think any of us like the idea of a live audience though if it were to be a public place.

And @Jamba, I think Flameboy got bit defensive because of the highlighting of the Americo-centrique nature of the charity. It can be hard enough to get sponsors because not many people want to sponsor us for "having fun" (even though 24 hours of anything is pretty difficult. Factor ReZ into the equation and it becomes almost unbearable. Love you ReZ). Finding another reason not to sponsor is a bit of a sore subject with us. That said, I do realise you're trying to help, so I just used it as an opportunity to explain what's being done internationally.

It's ok, I fully understand what you originally posted and it informed me about how the organisation works. It would probably be a good idea for you as a team to address that issue though, as if it's turning sponsors away then there might be room to improve on delivering the message.

But yeah, sure you've got this in the bag ;-) Carry on...

I'm gonna be honest it's you that's coming across as a dick... Like questioning why we do it and then making out that you can help if we are lucky? Even your message to Goafer second time round comes across as if your trying to tell us how to do something that's for fun and as a side effect we raise money, that we've done for 5 years.

Even now your not really saying what kind of help you can give us other than making yourself sound high and mighty. I don't see how my response was in anyway being a dick and I didn't call you weird just said it is a bit weird to question why someone is doing something for charity and then I pointed out why where it's going is irrespective of the point.

Compare it to the friendly nature of @Sheikah 's post.

Well way back when the 3 of us started in my living room we always said it would be awesome to rent somewhere to do it....I remember the college I worked at used to rent the meeting room for reasonably cheap not that it's an option but that kind of venue would work...plenty of room, internet connection.

I agree though having more locations would make things crazy as we are already trying to juggle between two as it is! I'm hoping to expand our numbers here in Canada too! So we could end up with quite a big team, nice to think how we've moved on from me randomly inviting people to my place all those years ago.

I was going to try and help you with your internet issues and what help I can give depends on where you are but seeing as you persistently want to be a tool about it and somehow feel entitled to support from people without them questioning it, you can go swivel. Why would I want to help you when you're behaving like that? I've never said what you guys are doing is bad, I've tried to understand why you are doing it and apparently that offends you... as a person that is volunteering my help, I have the right to do so and frankly, as a someone that is raising for charity, you should be grateful for every scrap of help you get.

I'm running a charity event on Saturday and if people ignore us or don't contribute to the event then that's our fault for delivering the message properly not their because we think their stupid or not compassionate.

@flameboy, not once have you asked me a question about how I can help and you're getting angry with me for not giving you that information. I had no idea that you wanted me to be clearer so that's just as much your fault for not bringing that up.

This will be my last post in this thread, as despite offering some help it's now wasting my time having to justify why I should help you.

There's no need to be so rude calling me a tool and telling me to swivel...I still don't know what your actually saying you can help with? You've not said? Even though I did question it earlier You said with your internet issues, we never had internet issues. Technical difficulties you never even checked before waltzing in like some kind of savior. Like saying you have "contacts" and being vague, whether you like it or not comes across as arrogant.

I mean after Goafer did a great job of explaining and I said how much we enjoy being part of the greater Extra Life cause and the zeitgeist around the event etc.... You've just remained vague and aggressive I don't it, I'm baffled to be honest how you've seemingly got pissed off for not getting enough credit for offering non-specific help. It's like someone saying they will sponsor and then don't say how much and then never do but then expect credit for it. I don't feel entitled to help it feels like your acting entitled having not even helped and just derailed a thread by your nature.

I've clearly offended you and even though I don't fully understand the reasoning why I will still be gentlemanly enough to say I'm sorry.

Actual news:

The international options weren't showing up when I was trying to sign up for this years event, so I asked why on the Facebook page and whether there was any news on UK and Australian hospitals. At first they said they were looking into why the international hospitals weren't showing up, but there was still no update on UK and Australian hospitals.

But then:

Hi again - Tech. Support has advised that international has not been activated for 2014 because there might be an update after all. We don't have any details yet but will share on our blog, Facebook and Twitter once we know what's going on. Please stay tuned!

So maybe UK hospitals are coming for this years event.
