Yoshi's Woolly World (June 26th)

Recommended Posts

I'm really looking forward to seeing how the general public find the game when it comes out later in the week. I'm genuinely baffled by how a game that I loved so much is getting such middling reviews. How a game like this can be called unoriginal, but the New Super Mario Bros games - the epitome of predictability in 2D platformers - can get a free pass is beyond me.

Easy.

This review came after Nintendo's E3 showing.

I dunno, I feel 2D platformers really don't get reviewed highly anymore. It always seems like reviewers of some places really look down on the genre. It's a similar thing to what we were discussing in another thread about top-down Zelda titles.

I personally can't wait, though.

God how do you get through life being so paranoid?

You think people, after weeks of having this game, changed their minds and reviews in the last few days because of E3?

I'm glad you felt the same way as I did about!

Just seems strange that I enjoyed it so so much, yet others found it so mediocre.

I know I'm a Nintendo fan writing for a Nintendo website (perhaps that's why NLife gave it such a good review too) but I'd like to think I'm not that blinkered!

Ah well, as you say can't wait for everyone to have a chance to play it and see what you all think :)

I did say to @S\.C\.G that me, him, Yoshi and Sonic would be bobbing along in a boat down shit creek together if I was wrong about this... ;)

A reason for its mixed reviews is maybe some people are tired of 2D platformers on Wii U. Super Mario Maker may escape that wrath because he's Mario, it has some online features and if the levels are bad it's because you suck.

Still should not effect a review of an individual game. It's unfair marking it down due to being bored with platformers.

If that were the case, it would be scandalous. Each game should be judged on its own merits. You can't simply score a game lower as you are tired of the genre, and if you are tired of the genre you shouldn't be reviewing the game.

My copy has shipped from ShopTo. :)

Quicker than the Nintendo store and cheaper in this instance it looks like, I got my game + amiibo copy for £42.61 whereas it was nearer £50 on the Nintendo store.

I think ShopTo finally realise how many pre-orders of Nintendo games they have been losing from me - probably others too - thanks to the Nintendo store and its all too tempting pre-order bonuses. :D

The Gamespot review ended with

Rob resisted playing The Witcher 3 just so he could review Woolly World for you. Please understand.

Makes me suspicious that he wasn't the guy to review it. Especially as he said the controls were too perfect and used it as a thing against the game.

Plus ShopTo have been a bit dodgy of late with their deliveries. I got mine for £38, thanks to the £5 I got from them fucking up my original amiibo order which caused me to start to mistrust them.

It's almost as bad as bringing up the PS4 every time someone has something bad to say about Nintendo ;)

The N-Europe Review is here! :)

Hope you all enjoy, I quite liked it... And as before if you have any questions and want any info please mention or PM and I'll do my best to answer ASAP!

Excellent review, makes me more tempted by the game! Gonna see what the damage is on this month's pay and consider picking it up at some point in the coming months. Too many things I want to spend my monies on!

My bundle has been dispatched from Nintendo. Fingers crossed it turns up tomorrow like Splatoon did!

Regarding the review scores it's not unusual for more niche titles to review differently on a general gaming site than a specialist one, you see it all the time with JRPGs for example. Ideally the reviewer should be someone who has at least some interest in the game in question, but it's clearly sometimes not the case.

Woolly World does look like it might borrow quite a bit from Tropical Freeze. I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't feel the most revolutionary of platformers in terms of gameplay by this point.

I cancelled my order with thegamecollection. I told them if they can't have it here by Friday then I want my money back. I'm not having another Splatoon on my hands. That didn't arrive until the following Tuesday. I said they treat international customers badly, sending games out on the same date as UK orders knowing full well it takes longer to deliver. Here some of ye again are going to have the Yoshi's Woolly World tomorrow when thegamecollection won't send it out until Thursday. I'll get the amiibo bundle from Smyths instore on Friday. Sure it's more inconvenient and expensive but it's just one of the many joys of being an Irish consumer.

Well, that's a problem of where you live, not thegamecollection's problem. I've never heard of any retailer who would send out international orders before their own country.

Well if they'd matched Shopto's delivery it could have arrived here by Friday. Thegamecollection said why they wouldn't send it out earlier because it was "to avoid games being leaked early". It's hardly leaked early when it would be in transit somewhere over the Irish Sea. Where I live isn't the problem. It's their delivery policies that's the problem.

If that were the case, it would be scandalous. Each game should be judged on its own merits. You can't simply score a game lower as you are tired of the genre, and if you are tired of the genre you shouldn't be reviewing the game.

Reviewing by nature is gauging a game against our expectations. I'm not saying get someone who dislikes a genre to review a game from that genre, because they're bound to review the game with a bias. But I think being bored by a series can validly form part of your review - if the particular game in the series you're reviewing was exciting you, because it was still innovating, you wouldn't be bored; right?

Let's say a game was the 10th game in a series or something, and very little had been improved over the course of the past 4-5 games. Even if the game was sound, maybe even mechanically great, it's also possible it's not exciting because it's the same thing again. Maybe it's also rehashing a lot of content from a previous game, or using gameplay mechanics that have aged with the times; should each game be treated a masterpiece, even if it's mostly all the same old spiel? In my opinion, part of keeping series going is knowing how to improve games so they still feel relevant. This feels particularly more important in less story-driven games.

Sorry I think that's rubbish. The reviewers expectations shouldn't be a factor, games should be judged on their own merits.

Agree re: the tenth installment in a series being judged based on what came before it though.

Yeah, was about to say the same thing.

The only thing a Yoshi game should be directly compared to are other Yoshi games.

There's a lot of shooters out there, but that in no way should affect a review of a new one.

It's a poor reason to mark something down in a review.

Also, someone mentioned something about someone saying the "controls are too perfect"?

Can someone get me a quote or something? I can't believe this without some kind of context!

Seeing as you asked, I went looking.

As expected from a Nintendo platformer, the controls are immeasurably perfect and dependable. Along with the usual high-jumps, tongue-whips and ground-pounds, Yoshi can also carry balls of yarn with him, which can be tossed at the press of a button. This manoeuvre requires timing, as once you hold down the throw button, a reticule will run up and down the screen, which will determine the projectile's trajectory upon the button's release. Care and attention is necessary, as Yoshi only has a max capacity of five yarns, and they are handy in many scenarios, such as activating secret platforms and wrapping piranhas in cotton muzzles. Since the vast majority of foes are made of wool, Yoshi can pull them in with his tongue, and instantly digest them into new balls of yarn. It's probably not worth mentioning where the balls sprout from.

The excellent controls only makes Woolly World easier to finish without many issues. In fact, if you have experience playing the likes of Super Mario World or Yoshi's Island, it's likely you'll be able to breeze through the game's first half on autopilot: Run right, line your jumps along the craniums of Shy Guys and Koopas, eat foes with a whip of Yoshi's tongue, and reach the exit on the furthermost-right point of the level. No real peril or heroics; just violent tourism.

How is that a negative, @Serebii?

Yep, that reads as positive. Ta very much, @Wii!

If the review said something along the lines of "The great controls makes the game so easy, it stops being fun", then that'd be dumb.

So you disagree with me, but then agree that actually we do have expectations as we judge them based on previous games in the series? :heh:

We judge games all the time based on expectations. Splatoon lost some favour because people judged the game to be lacking in content (based on expectations of how much content we should receive for a new game). It also lost favour as people wanted voice chat (again, an expectation). This is not a dig by the way, as Splatoon sounds excellent, but I'm pointing out that expectations do affect reviews, and it's impossible to rule out (nor do I necessarily think it should be ruled out). You can bet the new Destiny DLC this September is also going to get a bad rap unless it's really amazing, because it costs the price of the full game. Again, we have an expectation of how much game we should get for that money.

If the next COD launched and there was no voice chat, well, people have come to expect that feature in FPS games and would voice their anger.
