Xenoblade Chronicles X (4th Dec)

Recommended Posts

Even the standard version is 50 quid on the Nintendo store - that was the same amount I paid for Mario Maker and Yoshi with the Amiibo. I guess they need to recoup the higher translation costs.

Anyway, I have preordered with the game collection for 35 quid, so its all good.

The reason why it's £50 on the Nintendo Store (and the eShop) is because that's the standard RRP for Wii U retail titles (MM and YWW were released at lower than full price RRP). Every other online store will charge £34.99-39.99 for it though as no 3rd party store ever really sells games for RRP (likewise, if you want the digital version for cheaper, you can get a download code from GAME for the same price as the physical version at retail - so probably £39.99)

Yes, but something is up:

Mario Maker RRP 40 GBP (presumed).

Nintendo Store Price - 40 GBP

Amazon/Shopto/gamecollection price ~35 GBP.

Xenoblade RRP 50 GBP (presumed).

Nintendo Store Price - 50 GBP

Amazon/Shopto/gamecollection price ~35 GBP.

I guess it could be that Mario Maker is just not that discounted because they feel they do not need to. YWW tends to be 32-35 as well though.

Bingo. The retailers set whatever price they want, but the standard RRP of Wii U games is and has always been £49.99 in the UK. Has been that way ever since launch, even if nobody other than B&M GAME have had the balls to charge that much for them.

It's only in the last year or so that Nintendo has started releasing Wii U games at variable RRP prices around the world (These games are all cheaper than the standard $59.99 price in the US as well)

Laughing my head off here at how quickly people forget about RRP.

1 year, guys! You seriously can't remember that far back?

Not the sort of game that lends itself well to demos, I would presume.

Did you you see any of the world?

Was it the combat that was confusing?

I was just wandering around the overworld, there were lots of mobs too high level for me. The Nintendo rep used the map on the gamepad to change my location then told me to head towards a cave, then he wandered off. The cave was full of small but strong enemies, so I left... wandered around a bit more til I found some plant enemies around my level. I didn't find the shield that fills your health back up for a long time. One of my NPC teammates went down, and I was able to rez them, but another went down and I couldn't, for some reason. Occasionally I would come out of combat without understanding why, and couldn't figure out how to change targets. There was a QTE style prompt to land damage but I couldn't figure out why I was getting "good" sometimes and "fail" othertimes (might've been controller lag).

Anyway it looked great and actually the combat felt kinda fun, but like you say, it didn't lend itself to that environment. I would've preferred to run through a tutorial.

Thanks for the update. :)

The descriptions of the health regaining/shield stuff seem complicated/difficult to me from other previews I have read.

Have you played Xenoblade Chronicles on the Wii?

This makes me furious. Nintendo has censored the bikini for at least one female character in the West.

http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2015/10/nintendo_is_making_female_characters_cover_up_for_the_western_version_of_xenoblade_chronicles_x

The image on the right is the Japanese version and (to my eyes) shows a young woman with developed breasts, curved hips and long legs. The image on the left is the Western version which, as well as removing the bikini, they've actually made her look like a little kid! The legs looks shorter and the head far bigger in proportion to the body.

People can delude themselves that this is because of the character's age, but after the Project Zero debacle, I'm almost certain it's caused by the prevailing Puritanism of the time. The original character model is beautiful and, to me, doesn't look anything like a child. If the other female characters are allowed the exact same bikini, I'll take it back, but as it is I'm very disappointed Satoru Shibata is letting the European versions of games be ruined.

It may not "look like a child" but it is a child. They even say in that article that her age has been increased from 13 to 15 to make the outfit on the left (which is still pretty revealing) acceptable!

Can you imagine the outrage from some places if they see that Nintendo have children in such sexualised outfits in their games? And do you really think such sexualised outfits are really necessary?

I think the outfit on the left actually looks more appropriate for the game. The bikini outfit looks out of place.

And does it seriously ruin the game? It's a bloody costume!

Can you imagine the outrage if Nintendo implement a messaging system and people use it improperly to send indecent material to others?

There will always be loudmouth SOBs. Nintendo need to not pander to these foo's.

Oh I know, but that's a different subject altogether :p

You can argue that the original Xenoblade had bikini costumes, but they weren't on 13 year old characters!

We'll wait and see if adult characters have swimwear in this, if they don't it won't ruin my enjoyment of the game a single bit!

Also, considering Xenoblade 3D, which was released this year, had all the bikini costumes intact, I'm pretty sure it's the age thing!

She's 13 years old (15 years old in the western version for some silly reason). It's very obvious why they changed it and quite frankly, it was offensive to begin with. It might not technically be child nudity, but it's pretty damn close and is absolutely inappropriate.

The 3D character model itself has not been changed though (it's just the deceptive looking angle that the shot was taken at - someone on GAF posted a pic from the Japanese version at the same angle to prove it, as you can see below).

Good riddance I say.

If this game is ruined for you because of a costume change (from a 13-year old girl in a tiny bikini to a 13 year old girl in a slightly less revealing costume) may I suggest you seek some professional help.

I've (obviously) not played the game but if this is a character who is directly referenced as a 13 years old then, i'm sorry, it is darn right to remove it; in fact it should have been removed from the Japanese version (I've no idea if this is considered 'decent' in Japan, but it's certainly not in the West).

It's nothing short of voyeurism involving a child subject and it's disappointing to see this mild shit storm erupt - I though quite a few people in this world thought the sexualisation of children is a terrible thing. The original costume is way, way off the mark. Perhaps it could be justified if Monolith were making some form of social commentary but i'm quite confident they're not.

@Grazza, I mean this in the nicest possible way...

Your priorities are eschewed.

That outfit is so much more interesting than the Japanese one.

If you're playing this game so you can dress characters up in revealing outfits and then proceed to get angry when one cosmetic change is implemented, claiming it "ruins" the game, you're playing this game for the wrong reasons.

@Grazza I'm with the others, it is RIGHT it is changed, it's a bit weird you're so disgusted by the change, a little girl in a bikini is wrong, even if it's an adult it's still pretty classless.

Can I ask WHY you want these woman in bikini's? How does it make the game better?

Aside from the sleaziness of it all I actually think the new costume is far far superior. Looks to have some personality now.

As a father of a 2,5 year old daughter, I would not have any plans to buy the games if that was the costume (especially if it's the only costume). I am not even happy with the second one, but it's better.

I get the sentimentality. We should be playing the same version in Europe as Japan, or at least the vast majority of the game should be the same. That I agree with.

But, in this case, I actually think it's the wrong way around, in the sense that the Japanese version is wrong to begin with. The version on the left seems more fitting in with the tone of the game. Why would a character be running around with a bikini in the first place? THAT should be the default, not the one that the Japanese actually have.

Sharla wore some questionable armour in Xenoblade on Wii. I accepted that because it was part of the fantasy theme on the game. I can see the version on the left working in pretty much the same way. We're kidding ourselves if we think the version on the right fits in. What's the defence/armour level going to be for that? 0? It's pointless and doesn't fit in with the theme at all.

It's not a child though. It's a collection of polygons that, I still say, in the "silver bikini" image I posted looks like a young woman in possession of all the things that (as far as I'm aware) paedophiles aren't interested in.

They say she's 13, but we all know Japan has a strange attitude to age, where they design characters like adults, but then say they're much younger. Dead or Alive is a good example. Personally, I care about what I see more than the age they say a character is. Apart from if it's a real person, of course - that's very different.

And does it seriously ruin the game? It's a bloody costume!

When they take things like this out it does make it less enjoyable, yes, and thus "ruins" it to some extent. However, as I say, if they keep this exact costume for the older female characters, I will accept it was just an age issue.

Because I hate the way things are going. I see the World become more and more Puritanical, where less and less is allowed (try and get a nipple on the mainstream internet). People made excuses for Project Zero, they make excuses for this and you know they'll make excuses for the next one (whatever it is). I've had drawings of adult women in bikinis (I never, ever draw children, because those aren't the shapes I'm interested in) taken down... and for what reason? Because someone thinks it's rude. Someone thinks it's pornographic.

The human body is being redefined as obscene, to the point where soon we will no longer be able to show an ankle. I didn't have a single sexual thought when I saw the Japanese character; I just thought she looked sleek and the bikini was a good design. In the same way, I'd probably think the male characters had good muscles if they were shirtless. Not everything is sexual. We've adopted such strange values.
