PlayStation 4 Console Discussion

Recommended Posts

Had an email through from PayPal saying a refund was issued for £15.99 from Sony Computer Entertainment (i purchased the Spider-Man DLC content on Friday).  Had a check on PayPal, and a refund was issued to me.  So, have just got off the phone from PlayStation support who said it's weird why this has happened, they never ruled out it's their issue or PayPal's issue.  But i might get a banned account, which will be lifted as this isn't a fault of my own.

Are you on a Pro? My PS4 fans also go kinda crazy playing any HDR game to be honest. I have not considered cleaning it, I'm just chalking it up to the intensive processes. I just put headphones on :p

Might just try swapping the hdmi cable to see if the dimming problem goes away?

Nah an original.  I got it with Destiny which was I think...9 months into it?

Not tried swapping the HDMI cable, will give that a try at some point cheers.

I used compressed air to clear out my Pro when I got God of War, it sounded distressed. Afterward it would still rev up occasionally (usually during cutscenes) but it's so much quieter now.

Shame I can't easily steal this now!

Hopefully just cleaning around the edges (a lot of dust did come out) will have done it, but not used my PS4 since.

Hollow Knight: Voidheart Edition is set to release on PS4 on September 25th. Includes all 4 expansions that have been released so far and comes with a 20% discount for pre-ordering (making it £9.27, down from £11.59).

Not sure I'll triple dip for it, even though it is a fantastic game, but great news for anyone who hasn't played it on PC or on Switch yet.

Not too surprising, given that Kaz Hirai has mentioned wanting something to this effect in place before he steps down from Sony.

No PS3 games, though?

This is the one thing that could make me buy a subscription.

Not yet but if they can get those up and running then it will be amazing. As it stands, it's essentially a great way to rent and play PS4 games.

Not holding my breath for that on PS4. Maybe something for PS5.

Indeed.

For me it's useless, though. Just looked at the list of games and every game I'm interested in I already own/I've already played.

Im in the same boat but it's great for those who don't buy many games throughout the year.

You gotta imagine that the Xbox Gamepass has forced Sony's hand to do this. It's still not at the level of that service but it's certainly a step in the right direction.

Saw the trailer for this at the weekend when checking out what indie games were coming out in the next couple of weeks and it became an instant buy after seeing it in action.

There's only a handful of reviews out but they're all positive about the game, pointing out the similarities to Symphony of the Night and Chrono Trigger but saying it makes it's own case in the metroidvania genre. It also looks fantastic and the soundtrack is great too.

It's out today on PS4 and PS Vita and it's crossbuy (sadly not cross save as the dev has admitted screwing up his planning and wasn't able to get it in on time). Got it downloaded so looking forward to giving it a go later.

And if anyone is interested in a simple puzzle game with a good mechanic (and an easy platinum for trophy hunters), I recommend giving The Gardens Between a go. Really simple mechanic if fast forwarding/rewinding through levels and manipulating environments go progress, with some really nice touches on the gameplay front. Again, it's got a really nice chilled soundtrack to go with it and a nice story running through it too. It'll only run you a few hours, maybe 2 to 3, but I thought it was a really nice game and a nice change of pace from all the big hitter releases at the moment. There's a 20% discount until the 4th of October if anyone's interested.

Shawn Layden has confirmed that PSX will not be held this year in the PlayStation Blogcast.

Quote

For 2018, I know this is going to be a disappointment to some people, but we decided to not hold PlayStation Experience this year.

We won't have it in the States this year. The reasons behind that really are we don't have...we have a lot of progress that we're making on our games...Now that we have Spider-Man out the door, we're looking down into 2019 games like Dreams and Days Gone.

But we wouldn't have enough to bring people all together in some location North America to have that event. We don't want to set expectations really high and then not deliver on that. It was a hard decision, but we have determined that this year we will not hold PlayStation Experience.

So, it sounds like the focus on PS4 game development is slowing down, seeing as they don’t have enough to bring to PSX to warrant staging it, which would be smart, considering the reaction to last year’s event: the PlayStation WeSitDown&YouWatchUsTalk Experience.

PS5 inbound?

To be honest I think that was obvious at this year's E3. We'd been seeing the same games over and over and the fact that there wasn't much new this June really points to these being the last big PS4 games coming out.

On the other hand I heard rumours before that, suggesting that the change will potentially wipe everything from your account except PS4 purchases. So, trophies, PS3 games, etc etc. it's almost akin to making a new account. If that's true, it's basically pointless.

I think I read similar, basically that the setup that they had for PS3 wasn’t designed for changes such as this and that if it wasn’t sorted then that would be the only solution, and the problem is that, because the PS4 setup is built on top of the pre-existing PS3 code, going back to an earlier point in the code (i.e. the PS3 user ID) and changing the username would have the ripple effect that a lot of stuff further down in the code could be lost as a result.

However, I don’t see them offering that specific solution just because, as you say, it would be pretty much pointless. I have to imagine that they’ve figured out some sort of solution which isn’t going to tick many of their consumers off.

I still can't believe it's because the primary key in the DB was the username and not a user id. So everything else is linked to the username and not a unique ID.

It's like the first thing your learn in database design, dont do that.

Crazy. Nintendo get grief for friend codes but at least you can change your Switch online name whenever you want.

But then surely they can go through a ball ache of a process to move everyone to a unique primary key that's not their username and then open it up? I know that would need to happen and all affected services would need to be updated too so it'll be a hell of an undertaking, but why not build a new system for PS5 at this stage?

Considering Sony's terrible security, for lack of, back then, I'm not that surprised.

Where did you hear this? It doesn’t seem very likely... and if it was true it would be something you could solve very easily.

Gearnuke is reporting on a rumour that the PS5 will not only be backwards compatible with PS4 games, but with PS1, PS2, and PS3 games too

The recently updated patent which sparked these rumours is described as follows:

Quote

Each asset such as a texture called for by legacy software such as a legacy computer game software has a unique identifier associated with it.

The unique identifier can be rendered by imposing a hash on the asset, and then the asset stored with its identifier in a data structure. An artist remasters the textures for presentation on a higher resolution display than envisioned in the original software, and stores them back in the data structure with their identifiers.

The original software is then played on the higher resolution display, with asset (such as texture) calls being intercepted, identified, and the data structure entered to retrieve the remastered asset having a matching identifier. The remastered asset is then inserted on the fly into the game presentation.

I think that many of us will agree that Xbox’s backwards compatibility is one of only a few things that Xbox objectively has done better than PlayStation this generation with the Xbox One, so this would be huge.

Though, is it me, or does the patent read more like a virtual console/Xbox One X visual enhancement type of thing?

What games are people most hyped to play from now til new year?

For me it's Red Dead and Battlefield - love having the option of switching between a campaign-driven game and a multiplayer behemoth. All itches scratched - get bored of one, start up the other.
