General Gaming Sales/Charts Discussion

Cracking start for Until Dawn. The game may have some legs once word gets around on how good the experience is.

I'm surprised to see how low Disney Infinity is on the Wii U compared to the other platforms. Every other platform outsold it.

No sign of Devils Third. Not surprising given the reviews and price point.

Why don't we see any Japanese sales anymore? They used to be out on Wednesday.

From the Nintendo earnings report.

As of the 30th September 2015

Wii U LTD is 10.73 mil

3DS LTD is 54.34 mil

Yeah, the Wii U isn't going to get anywhere close to the GameCube numbers, which was essentially classed as a failure. I wonder what the Wii U is classed as then? Monumental cock-up?

They definitely need to compete with the other consoles. This is essentially as good as they can do by relying on Nintendo loyalists.

Or strike it lucky with the casual market again.

These numbers just continue the downward trend that has been happening with Nintendo consoles since the NES, the Wii obviously being the exception.

You can't run a company hoping to catch lightening in a bottle. However, Nintendo going for a dual console/handheld approach is different, potentially different enough to give them a real foothold again; no more resources split between two platforms and a piggyback on their reliably successful handheld platform are massive boons for them.

What they really need to do is to partner with more devs and indies.

Man the 3DS number is actually way lower than I thought it was. It's at the end of its lifespan but I was under the impression it was selling better.

The Wii U number is depressing, but what's even weirder is that Splatoon and Mario Maker have sold about 4.5 million combined. Using a best case scenario, if Wii U owners only purchased either Splatoon OR Mario Maker, that's less than 50% of owners purchasing the biggest games of the year on the console. Of course, it's pretty likely that most people who purchased Splatoon got Mario Maker and vice versa (which makes that worse), but it does make you wonder how active the current Wii U user base is.

Nintendo likely have figures that show how many of the 10 million Wii U owners are actually investing time in their system - it's a shame that we'll never know. I would be very surprised if it was above 5 million.

Interesting. I never looked at it like that.

As you said, clearly there are a lot of people not playing on the console. I wonder how many have actually given up on it and sold it on?

I probably won't touch mine again (unless Zelda DOES come out for Wii U) and I'm sure that the same applies to many on this board and those on GAF.

I think it's a long shot to be honest. The 3DS's best year in terms of sales was the fiscal year 2012-2013 - it would need a couple of monster year's to get near the PSP. It's just cruising to the end of its life to be honest...I think most 3DS owners are ready for the next Nintendo handheld.

This year I think mine has been used mostly as a Virtual Console machine. The serious lack of retail software has been a bit of a nightmare and it's no wonder why many on here ( and elsewhere ) have moved on from the thing.

There's still a few titles i'm interested in but, yeah, i'm ready for the next handheld. It's horrible switching between the 3DS and the Vita. The difference in visual quality is night and day. Nintendo's next handheld better be at least Vita levels in terms visuals.

Did you ever really believe it would manage GC numbers though? I know a lot of hopefuls were speculating it, but I can't say I recall having the grandest of confidence in it. The problem was...

This. I mean, I knew everyone here was getting alternate consoles and saying how they were etc but I was thinking even with my venture afield that I'd still play my WiiU from time to time - but I don't think I can be bothered to stomach it. I was thinking this a day or two ago(having not seen this) about whether I'd adopt another Nintendo console - and the honest answer was probably not. They're just so far behind standard that it's ridiculous - the amazing ease of PS4 is ridiculous compared to the struggles I had with Splatoon. The more annoying thing is it's not even the games/gameplay that's the issue, it's just the general infrastructure of it all. Splatoon is amazing as a game imo - but it's niggles really let it down and they're not particularly 'gameplay' ones imo. I was tempted to make an actual thread to discuss whether people would adopt the next gen Nintendo - but ofc a bit too controversial. It feels really mad to think I can feel like this now, because I honestly didn't think I would(despite many of you actually saying I probably would too :p)

It was always going to be a longshot for the Wii U to reach Gamecube numbers... The GC had quite a bit of third party support for about the first three quarters of its life. Wii U has had Nintendo alone supporting it for basically its entire life.

Gamecube may have failed for being too similar to the others, plus other reasons which we've been through many times, but Wii U was too different and didn't capture the general public like the Wii did. It's hard to know where Nintendo should go from here. It's hard to see them competing directly with Sony and Microsoft - even if they did go for parity with their consoles, Sony/MS are a lot more established in the industry than they were in 2001 and have fans who will stick with their consoles. Going for something different is just as risky - if it doesn't excite people at launch like the Wii did, it'll have no chance. Hence why they seem to be aiming for the mobile market - that's really where the money is now.
