Sales for smash are good. Hardware not so much and pretty much now confirms that no game will turn around hardware sales.

 

Also anyone who questions Nintendo releasing smash on 3DS first needs help. Very smart decision by Nintendo.

Wonder if amiibo will drive any sales. :wtf:

Most people STILL don't know there is a new system. They have ruined the systems sales through their dire marketing approach and mixed message.

 

It's crazy how many people I work with that have bought PS4's for their kids for Christmas based on the fact that it's the 4th version and they know it's the 'new playstation'. Nintendo ballsed up the WiiU's market awareness by name alone.

 

The sad thing is they won't change their marketing approach. Even some Christmas adverts along the lines of 'Did U know...' would have been good.

Did u know...free online. No subscription required

Did u know...best action game of 2014 Bayonetta 2

Did u know...Amiibo's/touch screen/virtual console...

 

No playing on the nostalgia for Wii Sports with the new version. No mario 3D World promo this year. No Mario Kart 8 Amiibo ads. Bayonetta ads?

 

Their marketing budget for Europe must be locked down tighter than Iwata's wallet. It has been embarrassing for system owners to see nintendo almost 'dismiss' the system from a marketing point of view. Thankfully they have been busy on their games, producing what many would regard as the best in their franchises so far.

What bothers me is that the next Zelda might be the best ever, and yet go totally unappreciated because of the system it's on. I'm telling people how good it looks at the moment, and yet they're so put off by the Wii U itself, they can't see past that.

Just today a girl at my work was saying she was going to buy a Wii game for one of her young relatives/cousin/whatever and said she hadn't realised there was this "other Wii" which has now complicated matters for her. Them casuals, they just don't know!

Isn't it more of a case that Nintendo know full well that they can't turn around Wii U fortunes so why bother throwing money at advertising which at the end of they day won't make a major difference.

 

Nintendo are looking to ride this generation out cheaply as possible.

Xbox One: Best selling console. 1.2 mil

Wii U: 220K * 1.1 (10% increase) = 242K

 

Seems like PS4 did 800k. That's a very good result for MS.

 

Wii U sales terrible. Smash Bros did nothing for the console and to only do 242k in November with a new game like Smash Bros is shocking. I don't think the platform will get close to GC numbers. Lucky to do 15 mil total I think. Not sure for certain but isn't it possible XB1 last month sold more than the Wii U has done all year?

 

COD and Madden 15 selling the highest on 360. Will this platform ever die? It just keeps on trucking.

Overall sales of Nintendo 3DS software in November increased by more than 40 percent over the same month in 2013, thanks in part to three huge games:

 

Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire: The next great Pokémon adventures for Nintendo 3DS launched on Nov. 21 and have already sold nearly 1.5 million combined physical and digital units in the U.S. alone.

 

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS: The best-selling individual portable game in the U.S. so far in 2014, Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS has sold more than 1.5 million physical and digital units in the U.S. since it launched on Oct. 3.

 

November was also a strong month for Nintendo on the console side, as sales of Wii U hardware and software increased by more than 10 percent and more than 90 percent, respectively, over the same period in 2013. In fact, the week of Nov. 23 was the biggest single week of Wii U hardware sales since the system launched in November 2012. Other Wii U highlights for the month include:

 

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U has sold nearly 710,000 combined units since launching on Nov. 21. With a current Metacritic score of 92, the latest iteration in Nintendo’s venerable fighting franchise is one of the best-reviewed games in the current generation of systems.

 

Nov. 21 also saw the arrival of amiibo, Nintendo’s new platform where gaming’s most recognizable characters can be used in different ways in many compatible games. Sales of amiibo are approximately equal to sales of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U so far, while Link, Mario and Pikachu (in that order) have been the best-selling figures to date.

The Wii U numbers are shocking, especially when you consider it was Black Friday. I guess Nintendo are happy for the thing to just chug along.

 

Great result for Microsoft, though not at all surprising. They've been really aggressive with their advertising, bundles and price cuts in the past month or so. It will be interesting to see if they put the price back up after Christmas.

Yep the days of 'Mario, Mario Kart and Smash Bros will save Wii U' are well and truly over.

 

No title is saving this console and it wont even get close to GC numbers when all said and done.

Their marketing has been atrocious. If they actually bothered to advertise it, it might actually sell more than three units a year.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. We'll see Nintendo's next home console launch in 2016.

 

Defo the handheld. They'll likely launch the home console in 2017 (5 year cycle). It's key that they nail down the OS with their next handheld first before shifting some resource over to the home console.

Would that actually achieve anything. More marketing doesn't necessarily translate into successful sales. Microsoft spent a fortune marketing and advertising Surface RT tablets. The end result was little sales and an eventual $900 million write off.

 

I think Nintendo are right not to waste money trying to advertise a 2 year old product that nobody wants.

 

The time to advertise aggressively was at launch and prior to the PS4 and XB1 being released. Unfortunately they got that wrong with some shocking adverts, no clear direction on selling the product so people knew what it was and not a Wii addon. Silly videos with that rufus dude and so on. The window of opportunity they had was wasted on very poor marketing and ad campaigns.

add RIM with the blackberry phones and the tablet they released also. they advertised loads and it achieved nothing!

 

if people are not interested in a product then no amount of marketing will change that opinion.

 

like you said, the time to advertise was before and in early stages of release. the problem was that the advertising that nintendo did do was really bad and then the fact that that there was very little software to advertise with the machine.

Marketing the machine is pointless now because gamers are already investing in the PS4 and One (or PC) and the casuals have moved on to iPads and other such devices for those quick-burst games. The only chance the WiiU has got is with the type of gamer who wants to experience everything, including the "quirky" types of stuff that Nintendo produces. This is a minority. Those types of gamers are already going to be clued up because they're the type who know the ins and outs of the gaming world, so the WiiU already exists to them.

 

Tbh, I want the machine to die a death and for Nintendo to go away and re-evaluate things and make the changes necessary (of which there are many) before coming back with a proper console. It's frightening how many people are unaware about the machine.

Nintendo are advertising the Wii U. Just the other morning I saw a Smash Bros ad followed by a Mario Kart ad. These were both on one of the cartoon channels, which I guess if nothing else confirms who Nintendo's target audience is.

Read a great article last week which concluded that you couldn't have a Wii U as your only console as you would miss out on so many AAA 3rd party titles, but likewise you couldn't just have a PS4 or XB1 as you miss out on some of the best games available. I think most of have already come to the conclusion that this gen, probably like the last few is a case of owning a Nintendo console and one of either Sony or Microsoft to tick all gaming boxes.
