General Gaming Sales/Charts Discussion

Recommended Posts

There seem to be a few people on here interested in the sales and charts of games, which is a totally fine thing to discuss. But rather than clogging various topics up I figured a separate topic should be created and stickied.

I'm pretty sure we used to have one of these in the past as Dante used to post them every week. Anyway, use this topic for such things now, which will free up the likes of the Wii U discussion topic for other things.

Thanks

Does there exist any numbers on how download-only eShop games are doing?

Good to see Nintendo Land and Mario holding and they should soften the blow from the HW drop which I think will happen over the next month. Hopefully it will stay above 50k a week but there is nothing coming out.

Probably a good idea to seperate the discussion into its own thread really. Plus it gives us a place to talk about Wii U and 3DS stuff together! :D

Wii U held on much better than I had expected BTW. It barely dropped at all! (As did the 3DS, continuing its rise to heaven!)

Its software also has some nice legs growing there. I suspect that they'll stick around for a good while there!

NSMB2 has bounced back quite a bit and Paper Mario SS is almost certain to become the best selling game in the series now!

Fantasy Life's drop is reletively low too. Looks like Level 5 have found their saving grace after their recent run of bombas.

Also where the hell did New Style Boutique come from!? It just came back out of nowhere! Nice to see a bump for MH3U 3DS and PKMD 3DS too (I wonder if we'll see a rise for that next week as a result of the Gen 6 announcement...)

Does there exist any numbers on how download-only eShop games are doing?

The only figure we have is for Animal Crossing New Leaf, which is now number 1 in the Japanese charts with over 500k sales.

Whatever happened to him?

Isn't he supposed to provide N-Europe with a steady supply of charts and such?

3DS dominating the charts in Japan. Animal Crossing is a sales beast.

Once Monster Hunter 4, Dragon Quest 7 and Pokemon have all been released later in year, its not mad to think that 3DS sales will be near 20 million.

Have we any idea how the 3DS is doing in the UK?

We won't know for sure into Nintendo release the numbers. We do know that over the holiday season Mario kart, nsmbu 2 and Mario 3D have been holding very well every week in the software top 40. I don't think it's doing wonders but I do think the 3DS hardware sales would of been pretty good in the UK during the holiday period.

NPD results are in.

Nintendo News

Wii U Hardware Sales Surpass Wii Sales by More Than $30 Million through First Six Weeks

With more than 460,000 units sold in December, Wii U has now sold nearly 890,000 units in the United States after only 41 days on the market, according to the NPD Group. To date, Wii U hardware sales have generated more than $300 million in the U.S. alone; Wii hardware had generated just more than $270 million at the same point in its lifecycle.

“While the Wii launch established new benchmarks in the United States, Wii U has surpassed its predecessor in perhaps the most important category: revenue generation,” said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “The demand for the Deluxe SKU, which was essentially sold out at retail this holiday, and the strong attach rate of New Super Mario Bros. U, shows that we have the value and the games to drive momentum in 2013. We look forward to offering great new experiences and bringing smiles to millions of new faces throughout the year.”

New Super Mario Bros. U has now sold more than 580,000 units, an attach rate of more than 65 percent.

Nintendo 3DS sold more than 1.25 million units in December and has crossed 7.7 million units sold life to date.

New Super Mario Bros. 2 became the fourth Nintendo 3DS title to surpass 1 million units sold in the U.S., and has now sold more than 1.45 million units life to date.

Nintendo 3DS continues to outpace the historic sales rate of Nintendo DS.

Wii sold nearly 475,000 units and crossed 40.8 million units sold life to date.

Ubisoft’s Just Dance 3 became the 10th Wii title to sell more than 5 million units life to date.

Nintendo DS sold nearly 470,000 units and crossed 53 million units sold life to date.

Yikes less than 500k in December. I like the spin but damn 460,000 units in December is very low. The wii outsold the Wii U!!

The attach rate for NSMB U is fantastic.

Great 3DS numbers. Brilliant!!!

Them Wii U numbers are horrid..

Its gonna get worse over next 3 months. No software to buy so that = low sales.

3DS done well.. :)

No big holiday software and it still shifted lots of units. Animal Crossing would have made a killing if it would have been released.

xbox 360 is a beast in the US. 8 years old and it is still killing the charts!!

Those Wii U sales numbers aren't very good. They had to try and put some spin on them. Saying it earned $30 million more than the Wii is lame. It costs $100 more than the Wii did. They're having a field day with this press release on other sites.

460,000 units sold really isn't great. Even Pachter, the most anti-Nintendo person on the planet predicted it would sell 700,000. What's he going to say about this?

At least we have ........??? to look forward to. The release schedule isn't going to help too much for the next 6 months. Somebody's getting a beating in Nintendo HQ over this and if they're not they should be.

The release schedule in every region is awful. Sales for the next few months are going to be bad. After seeing what happened with the 3DS post launch it baffles me that Nintendo have made the same mistake in regards to software droughts.

Dont have the numbers but here is the list of wii u software sold in December. The 3rd party numbers cant be great as Zombie u is the only 3rd party game to of moved 100k LTD.

Would really like to see the COD numbers. Looks like it's done nothing. Good to see Scribblenuts and Sonic racing high in the list but considering Zombie u is the 3rd party game to have moved 100k since launch then the other games must be doing real low numbers. Doesnt bode well for future 3rd party support.

One thing Nintendo should really do is drop the price of 3DS software. The big games can still be premium but everything else should be £10 or $10 cheaper on release.

Merged LTD 3DS and Vita 3rd party standalone titles with no bundles:

As this list shows handheld software has trouble selling and both the 3DS and Vita games need to be cheaper!!!

This is where the VC would have done nicely. Digital titles, whether it be original software or classics from the VC, help to bridge the gap between retail releases.

I can see this thread getting very sexy very quickly :D

As for Fantasy Life discussion, yup, stock problems both online and in store. Luckily if you don't mind going digital it's available there, but my lust for physical boxes just can not be resisted.

EDIT: Just got heads up from Amazon JP that new stock of Animal Crossing is due 20th of January. I guess you should probably expect another spike that week.

So let's get this straight:

The Wii sold 1.1 million in the same time period in North America.

The Wii U has thus far sold 890,000 in that territory.

It will outsell the Vita in a few months in the US and has been the most successful launch of an HD console.

I agree that the 30mill$ extra revenue is blatant spin, but I'm afraid so is the "not as great as Wii = horrid" line. Rather unpalatably for the black and white world of gamers, it's sold.. decently - and that's after after a disappointing E3, bad marketing, confusion, update meltdowns and (by general internet consensus, although I don't agree) "no launch games".

It's neither amazing nor terrible, but squarely in the middle, and therefore can be spun any way you like.

Those Wii U sales are alright, but not amazing. The Wii did 604K back in December 2006, so the Wii U's first December is not that far off (there's only 136k's worth of difference and the Premium model was supply constrained - with people largely ignoring the Basic model at this point in its life time). Considering that Nintendo themselves forecasted that the Wii U's first quarter would be slightly behind the original Wii, it looks like they're pretty much on track to hit their forecasted shipments.

That NSMBU attach rate is just nuts though! I'm also surprised to see ZombiU so low on the Wii U list. It's quite different to how it stands here in the EU where it's the current Wii U No3!

NSMB2 is the biggest shocker for me though. It has just rebounded out of nowhere!

You have to remember the supply issues that the Wii had though. Back in 2006 you could not get a Wii for love nor money. The Wii U, although had minor supply issues, can still be found on shelves.

That doesn't change the fact that it's selling to Nintendo's expectations. They forecasted that it would lag behind the Wii slightly and that's exactly what it has done.

It doesn't need to be the same phenomenon that the Wii was to be a success.

The wii had huge supply constraints. If it didn't it would of sold way more than 600k in Dec 06. The wii u sold less than the PS3 599 dollars console did in Dec 06. There is no way this number is good. 2nd month in December which historically is a good month for Nintendo. The wii is a dead console and sold more. I know the ps2 did the same but the ps2 was still relevant. This number is bad and it will only get worse.

Yes, that undoubtedly did affect the Wii's initial sales. The point about the Wii U eclipsing 360 and PS3 launches still stands though.

If the Wii U is even half as successful as the Wii overall it'll be plenty. I never expected the 3DS to do as well as it has, so who knows how things will go when some of the big name franchises are wheeled out.

It'd be nice to have some solid figures for Europe. The silence is deafening. It's be a shame if there a was huge discrepancy with other regions and we get treated like the poor relation.
