Missing files on USB drive - HELP

Recommended Posts

I plugged in my usb drive at work and was gutted to find that all of my planning that I did during the summer has gone. One of my folders has changed into a "blank" file, as in it has a plain white icon and asks me which program I would like to open it up with when I try to open it, whereas it was simply a folder containing about a dozen word documents.

Some of my folders still contain some documents, but the majority are missing. Something did flash up when I tried opening up the drive at the start, but Windows asked if it could recover it, only to then say that it couldn't fix the damaged files.

Am I right in thinking that a recovery program will sort this out? These files are important and I need them urgently. Also, to add insult to injury, I can't download any recovery programs at work due to Administrator privileges/settings, which means I will probably have to try at home.

I just really want to know if I can get these files back, or else I'm going to have to spend weeks working on them again, which is time I don't have.

Perhaps try this:

http://www.piriform.com/recuva/builds

They have a version that will run on a USB drive. Don't put it on the drive you want to recover from try and put it in your my docs folder / public. It doesn't require an install so should be ok.

Amazing, thanks.

I have managed to recover some of the hidden files. But, one or two of my folders which have those "blank file" icons didn't seem to be recovered. Are those damaged? Can they be fixed at all?

From memory recuva shows you how damaged a file is. If it's green it can fully be restored, yellow there may be some corruption. Red then it can't really be recovered in any usable state.

I don't think you can recover any files beyond that. The best thing to do would be to not use the drive at all and see if there is a more powerful recovery program that you can use. I haven't tried any beyond recuva. One that showed up on a quick google search was: http://www.undelete360.com/

This one claims to repair corrupted files: http://www.filerepair1.com/

Since I haven't used either of them myself I would suggest a virus scan on the setup files before you install.
