And the thing is, you only think it's a great look because you've been told to by the fashion industry, and because everyone else is wearing it. Were you wearing it 4 years ago? Will you e wearing it in 4 years? No, because it won't be fashionable. So don't come out with some "I like to stand out and be individual" bollocks. If you follow fashion (the clue is in the word "follow") then you'e wearing the same mass replicated outfit as everybody else. Take the camel chinos (or worse, those one that end above the ankle and are shape as if you're bow legged and saddle sore). If you saw somebody wearing that 10 years ago you'd think they looked stupid. But because they sell them in Topman and River Island you all think they look amazing, and must rush out and buy some. Also, you both claim to love clothes that are high quality, yet you then wear/compliment jeans from Primark and a cheap t-shirt from Topman. I've owned some of hose t-shirts, and I worked in Primark. The quality is absolutely terrible. And you say my original post annoys you so much, but what exactly is wrong with it? Are you denying that you're just following trends laid out by the fashion industry (which is largely run by middle aged men)? If you truly wanted to be individual then you would design (and make) your own clothes. Claiming to following popular trends, buying from high street chains, and then claiming it's to express your own individuality or stand out, is quite frankly moronic. I also find it incredibly shallow to have one your your main interests as dressing a certain way in order to impress people and try and stand out as if you've moved your way up some sort of fashion leaderboard. Wow, ok where to start... First off with the rolled up pants thing. Not every single pair of pants or boat shoes look the same. You know, I do follow the trends. I've never said I don't, everyone does to some extent. I just like the stand out in that trend, for example let's take boat shoes. If 90% of people are wearing boats from Topman/River Island that all look extremely similar but I still like them, I would consider going to some of the more specialist shops in Newcastle and buy a pair that aren't exactly the same as everyone else's. Back to the high quality point you made, I said most cheap clothes don't last but not all. So that's sorted. About the making your own clothes point, I get a lot of my clothes tailored. That's not that far off. I might buy some baggy jeans and get them make skinny and tapered. Or even buy a long sleeve shirt and get it made into a short sleeve shirt. So unless I work in a chinese sweatshop, that's about as close as I'm going to get. Lastly, well I don't have much to say other than if you think someone being interested in the fashion industry is "shallow" then I really pity your outlook on life. Posted September 9, 2012 I think you should let your girlfriend do your clothes shopping for you, Nando. She knows what looks good on you. I usually find it hard to know what looks good when I'm shopping for clothes. I'll see something and think, "man, who'd wear this?" and later I'll see someone wearing something similar and it actually looks pretty good. Posted September 9, 2012 I understand the concept of fashion, and I am not fashionable. It isn't just about following trends it is about interpreting those trends and being able to arrange an outfit from default parts that combine to make a unique take on the current trends. To the untrained eye the recurring traits or themes are spotted but the overall effect is not. I appreciate that people can do this and I respect that they choose to. I think it is short sighted to just say that fashion is what a bunch of people say it is. Fashion is a constantly evolving wave that builds upon or purposfully subverts the previous trend. It is a process that is not restricted to clothing, but found in computer games, book covers, website layouts, packaging, brands themselves. Pretty much anything that needs to appeal to human beings has to evolve over time. For the same reason that new words come into teenage parlance and old 'hip' things to say become dated, connotations change with time and with usage. Posted September 10, 2012 I tend to agree with @Aneres11 . I do like clothes and shopping, I will wear clothes from say, River Island if I like it. There's a lot of stuff I don't like, especially at the moment. All these baggy tops with cross symbols on, bluergh. I like to wear clothes that suit my figure, and I guess I do have my own style, which is vintagey but modern dresses, with a pulled in waist. My new dress: Also, I like the colour green :awesome:. Posted September 10, 2012 I love my clothes and I'm probably in a similar boat to Ell, Caris, Aneres and JonSt. I'm not afraid to spend a bit of money on something that I really like if it fits me well. I bought two different polo shirts form All Saints a week or so again at £40 a go. Yeah, expensive but they both fit me really, really well (quite tight fitting) and go well with the jeans that I like to wear out. On the flip side, two of my favourite t-shirts right now are £5 from Zara. What I wear on a night out depends on where we're going... I'm liking right now just a plain tshirt (white or red) and then a smart blazer on top. Good for lots of different situations and because I'm quite slender a tight fitting top looks really good on me. And you say my original post annoys you so much, but what exactly is wrong with it? You can say that about all clothing, if you buy Primark or go high end. It's all designed by someone else. It's what you do with your items of clothing, how you wear them and how you put together different outfits. What you wear with what. You could also say that about anything. Posted September 10, 2012 It's strange that everyone seems to be wearing it - when I don't see many people walking round in leather tasseled loafers or white / pastel coloured tailored trousers / slim jeans... But hey, that's where fashion is interpreted in different ways. Those who don't follow fashion probably think everyone is wearing it because they just see jeans t-shirt and 'shoes without socks'. (The horror). However those with a bit of fashion flair will see it as something a little more than that. And that's the difference. @Emma - great pics btw! Posted September 10, 2012 Moogle, your opinion on uniqueness and originality seems ... strange. What do you expect? We're six billion people and counting on the planet; it's virtually impossible to do, wear or imagine anything that's not been done, worn or imagined before - by plenty of people, most likely. In that sense originality is dead. But that's rather irrelevant, because we're still all unique individuals; not two people are completely identical in all aspects, so what matters is that we do, wear and imagine what we like best. Who cares if something's unoriginal as long as it suits the unique individual that is you? Personally I've always been mostly a t-shirt-and-plain-trousers type of guy, but lately I've taken a liking to "nicer"/"older"/more "formal" clothes, particularly shirts and suits, and am currently in the process of slowly adjusting my wardrobe accordingly. My daily outfit at the moment consists of a tweed jacket over the standard t-shirt and trousers, and I quite like that look. I also grab every opportunity to go full classy gentleman. Posted September 11, 2012 Stuff That jumper was how much?! In all seriousness though I'm much closer to Caris' line of thought on this than the opposing 'all fashion is BS' mindset. Most of the people who tend to complain about others following trends and all looking the same, will usually be the people who dress as generically as possible. Just that their particular choice of clothing will look generic in more than one 'season'. As for my personal taste, I just like seeing what I can get on the cheap that suits me. I like buying nice clothes but I don't really have the money to be buying things I like full price, so I tend to get a bunch of stuff at once in the sales. Posted September 13, 2012 I love going clothes shopping, but there is so much crap out there. Men's clothes shopping is an almighty pain in the arse. Far too often is there a nice looking t-shirt/shirt that is ruined by some crappy logo or brand name. I like going into the likes of Jack & Jones, but I'll pretty much go anywhere, as it really depends what is there on the day. My last few t-shirts have been from Jack & Jones and H&M, I think. I recently bought a shit load from O'Neill, so that might be my new favourite place. I tend to go for something with a colour that either suits me or white, usually with an image of some sort. I'm not really a plain t-shirt kinda person. Don't usually go for these corny t-shirts with funny one-liners on there. One place I absolutely loathe is Hollister. Impressive from the outside, but their clothing range is terrible. So bland, nothing impressive or interesting about it. Majority of the stuff is ordinary clothing with their logo slapped on in the middle of it. Don't even care if it feels good to wear, it looks arse. Posted September 13, 2012 I spend as little as possible on clothes and buy new stuff as little as possible! :p When I do need stuff, as was the case a few months ago when I needed new trousers/shirt/tie/shoes for an interview due to weight loss @Aneres11 came to my rescue and basically took me round Trafford Centre and picked stuff for me, he made me look gooooood! Posted September 14, 2012 I think I wrote this out 3 times before posting. I prefer more expensive shops, all saints is my favourite, the clothing are all set to the style and colours I prefer and unfortunately, that comes with a price tag. I also pay a lot to have my clothes custom made on Etsy, because of the size that I am, (I'm 5ft10) so I'll wear a lot of tops that are actually meant to be dresses. As for the style? It's quite plain, in the sense that I don't tend to wear prints or go for colour...much (For example, Emma looks fantastic in pretty dresses, I look like a bit of an idiot). I tend to stay to layering and basics to make it look more interesting than it actually is. So now I spend most of my time in black clothes with the odd pretty scarf and bag, its all very minimalistic ...hmm. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

I have the problem that I love the fit of All Saints clothes but I like to wear a bit of colour... I managed to find a dark purple polo, and light blue polo last month though so pleased about that.
