Please help stop a 5% increase in beer duty

Recommended Posts

If you don't tax all alcohol, where do you draw the dividing lines?

I'm sure someone who knows how to write in legalese could word it properly to only include alcopops and those stupid 3 litre bottles of paint stripper they call cider.

Am i just being stupid, or would this only increase the price of a pint 15-20p?

Yeah it is, considering how expensive alcohol already is.

So how much is a pint there at the moment? I seem to remember it being ridiculously cheap when I was home over Christmas. For a pint of Stella here it's normally around

It definitely sucks but things like cigarettes and beer are easy to get some increased revenues from' date=' people are going to buy them anyway so may as well squeeze as much out of them as possible.[/quote']

Depends on if there are drink promotions and such. But the average price for a pint here in a pub is €5.

Not a massive increase is it.

It's not just about that, it's about the fact in the last 4 years it's gone up nearly 40%.

On your average pint you're paying over a pound in tax nowadays. It's increased well over inflation If i'm doing my maths correctly.

So it won't be much difference then will it?

If you're already paying £3.50 (i rarely drink, so not sure if accurate) for a drink, an extra 20p is hardly making a difference.

If you had 10 pints, it would end up £2 more expensive, which doesn't seem like much of a difference to me.

until a few years down the road of not saying anything and pints that are usually £3.20 round here are now £5 and pubs are closing left and right because no one can really afford it anymore and then the breweries shut down and millions are out of employ. (an extreme example I admit)

Just buy your beer online like any other person nowadays.

Buy beer online? That's insane.

Much better to simply download it.

You should hear the people bitching when the petrol goes up a penny. I'll use this argument, see if it works.

No, I asked people who like beer and like going to the pub to consider emailing their MP! Thanks. The A&E has nothing to do with anything. Again, please start your own thread

:weep:

How has the nhs/a&e got nothing to do with drinking and its associated costs? People who binge drink will most certainly expect to get seen by specialists when everything goes tits up and their liver starts to fail...

You're not making yourself out to be any less moronic with that ridiculous argument.

Topics evolve and get discussed here... if you don't like it don't post.

I'm not sure I want to increase the tax at all. It's like spirits - someone enjoying a Remy Martin over a few months is very different to someone buying a cheap vodka to drink in one go, but as you suggest, you can't easily differentiate between the two. As @Twozzok says, there'll always be something cheap for binge drinkers to buy. Like most other things, I'd rather see more punishment for those who actually break the law.

Woah, what the hell happened?! I appear to have been made chairman of the anti-alcohol brigade. While this is an honour, I assure you, I am far too busy to take on a challenging job such as this. Therefore i humbly resign, effective immediately.

What we need is former teacher, perhaps one who is the head of education and is only in power because everyone above her is dead.

Yes it will. You're saying it's only £2 a night, but it was also £2 last year, and before that. I used to buy pay ~£2.20 for a pint of lager, now I pay £3.20. I'm only 21 for christ's sake. If that's not a big increase then I don't know what is.

I don't know which is more odd; the delusion you have that you have 'out-argued' everyone here (something I don't think even you really believe) or that you've noted people have insulted you, despite you having done this yourself a healthy amount.

I think this has been a good topic in terms of debate about something topical, just a shame that the OP has gone about strangling discussion for personal reasons.

You can already by 4 pints for less than the price of one pint in the pub.

Depends on where you go, my local currently has a deal where a pint costs £2.10. Normally costs £2.50

True, if you're talking London prices then i agree. Some pubs i go to have prices under £3 a pint still, and thats in places in Cardiff.

I get where @madeinbeats is coming from. It's getting ridiculous and is damaging Pub's and their worth to a local community. Unless you can find a shitty Wetherspoon's it's almost not worth going out drinking in London and surrounding areas unless you're minted/willing to spend a fortune.
