Megaupload shuts down

Recommended Posts

The funniest thing of it all, Megauploads CEO was Swizz Beats.

Apart from Megaupload's site saying so, there isn't actually any proof. He owned 0% of the company.

UMG got this taken down a few times with copyright claims. They had literally no rights to any of it. Megaupload was about to launch a service for musicians where the musician got 90% of the profits. This is why I think it is now it's been taken down.

Read the articles attached to that video, fascinating. Advise anyone else interested to do the same. Would MU still be pursuing the case, with what's happening now?

FileSonic, another file upload site has removed all sharing from the site. You can only access files you've uploaded personally.

On Sunday, Reddit readers reported that FileSonic's file-sharing capabilities had been shut down. They also suggested other similar sites were in the process of deleting large numbers of files and experimenting with blocking US IP addresses.

"All sharing functionality on FileSonic is now disabled," FileSonic's homepage reads. "Our service can only be used to upload and retrieve files that you have uploaded personally."

According to TorrentFreak, FileSonic was "among the top 10 file-sharing sites on the Internet, with a quarter billion page views a month".

RapidShare, one of the best-known cyberlocker services, told Ars Technica on Saturday that it was not concerned about the raid as file hosting is legal and RapidShare acts "rigidly" against copyright infringement on its servers.

Okay... now FileSonic I did use for... stuff.

I even paid a couple of monthly fees for when a lot of... files, were online that I wanted.

I'm going to speak the ugly truth:

I get the impression most people here aren't anti-piracy.

I'm pretty anti-piracy now to be honest.

I did use FileSonic for tutorial DVDs in the past though.

The US is looking for at least 14 Benzes, a Predator statue, two 108 inch TVs, a Seadoo, a 1957 Cadillac, a Maserati, and a Mini Cooper.

Nice to see they're working on my demands. Bit late now though, Mrs Obama is already showing signs of Stockholm Syndrome.

I fail to see what it has to do with Megaupload though.

I'm pretty much the only thing Anonymous support is piracy. Nothing more.

There's only one kind of piracy I do these days, and that's for American TV shows. If the shows are good enough then I will buy them, but there's simply no decent distribution method that will allow then to watch them after they air in America.

If, for example, Hulu had a worldwide subscription service for shows as they appear in America, then I would sign up anyway.

I think that there alone would simply solve 99% of visual media piracy

but it won't ever happen because the likes of big CEO's of massive global empires *cough*Murdoch*cough* would loose millions in subscriptions to their tv networks which claim to bring shows across the atlantic ASAP

I think in my lifetime i've only ever pirated a few songs which were always rubbish quality, I tried to download casino royale....and got Blow renamed casino royale and the eboot to a converted version of Chrono Cross to use on my PSP....and disk two eboot was corrupt so i never used it anyway.

Since then i've been indiffernt to piracy due to my poor experiences,

I can't understand it for music since the tracks are so cheap, Tv i do understand for the above you mentioned.

(Aside from the element who just want stuff for free) Piracy of these can easily be solved, CD and mp3 prices are dirt cheap now, but could be cheaper that would surely prevent a lot of piracy, and dealing with TV as above would effectively solve that.

Its games thats a real problem!

theres too much shit produced by developers, be it a brand new over hyped game or a sequel that gets released and is dog shit! this pushes people to piracy to try before they buy, once they've done it once they just pirate and buy the good games.

Then theres issues like mine where developers don't release a game world wide, or they want an old game no longer produced.

In the instance of stuff like (for example) Chrono cross, its an old game on an old format and no updated version is avaliable worldwide when it could

or there are developers who've gone yet people want their games. so the only option there is to pirate it. But thats wrong it seems.

There should be a cut off age/time for non use of a property when allowing digital copies can be no longer illegal, or for gods sake release the damn thing and not sit on it!

I've no idea how you'd stop games pirating without court/police involvement.

Maybe More Demo's, more community involvement/criticism is taken on board during a development process, more careful consideration on what they produce...and have some sort of legal system to rip games you own through a licensed software package for use on other formats AKA psone games to psp if third parties can do it why can't sony? the legal element only applies to new releases not to using already bought software on something. Its obviously monetary but if a system was avalibale with an xbox live priced sub to use per year i'd probably buy it. Hell they could limiti the amount you do per month, or just have a huge monthly cost so you'd do every game 1 month if they don't want to do that.

(not sure where i'm going with this now just ranting so i'll stop)

basically piracy bad, but legal avenues should be the final resort to stop it!

There is in the US. 95 years after publication, I believe (so not exactly much use).

Rockstar have the right idea on how to do things.

With regards to piracy, I think it huts gaming much more than music, films and TV shows. They all have licencing money (cinema, radio, tv channels, etc). There's more beyond the physical product.

Games? Well, they just have the product.

Not sure how twisted or hypocritical this is, but I am anti-piracy when it comes to independent or small companies/designers/musicians. Downloading songs by big, powerful, rich artists doesn't cause me any guilt - am I really hurting their earnings? If evidence proving that is presented to me, I will stop pirating and buy their stuff. I buy CDs and DVDs by one artist, which is my favourite band. I also buy songs when it's a "pay any amount" price (e.g. Amanda Palmer employs such a system). I would buy songs via iTunes if I didn't hate the program so much and lack an Apple device. I'm afraid I'm a broke student and can't afford to buy CDs and DVDs of every song or movie I want to experience, and I also can't deal with how much physical space that they would occupy - if it's available to me for free, why shouldn't I take it? It's not like I'm physically stealing something or causing a terrible inconvenience. I don't download huge amounts either.

I also think that downloading *reasonable* amounts ~illegally~ is ok for sampling purposes. I'm eager to give deserving content publicity online, which should totally count for something according to the speed, breadth, and depth (imagine a tree of users) with which information is propagated online nowadays. I am way more anti-piracy/theft when it comes to small artists and designers. I don't pirate games because I don't game anymore.

Amanda Palmer has written about her experiments with a business model involving letting fans pay what they think she deserves, and how the music industry should embrace downloading as a form of acquisition of music, and try to monetise it instead of fight it. It's an interesting read, and I think I agree with her. I can't find the link to her posts about it :(

95 years huh? that's a little long given how quickly things are outdated in the electronics industries

Rockstar are a prime example of what it should be like!

I'm most erm annoyed? in agreement with piracy? when it comes to my example of Chrono Cross, i wanted it on another medium than my owned copy, but to do so i needed illegal third party software or to download an already converted file. (for some reason when i tried to compile disk 2 as an eboot myself it never worked..copy protection on 1 disk? scratched? who knows)

Its not strictly piracy then, but the "industry" views it as the same, we should have the rights and abilities to convert our media where sensible, the psp is an obvious example of a sensible case since it was designed to play converted psone games, obviously nobody would expect to play a game on an xbox or even more outlandishly an oven.

The biggest obstacle as always is the industry is behind with the times

The 95 years is just a standard copyright thing.

Laws relating to technology are very, very slow. In the UK, up until August 2011 it was illegal to rip music off a CD (or DVD/game/etc) into another format (i.e. .mp3). Actually, I don't actually know if the law that made it legal has actually been passed yet.

It's not that I'm pro-piracy it's that the legal route is so irritating. There's a famous image that shows exactly how I feel.

pirateddvd1.png?54b313

When Thor came out on DVD a while ago I wanted to rent it online, but the online rental of Thor was only made available a week after you could buy it. That restricts my choice, so is stupid. They lost me as a customer. They'd get a lot more custom from me if I could rent as stuff was released in the cinema too. Where's the choice?

I bought a DVD (Charlie Wilson's War) and there was a non-skippable FIVE MINUTE advert/lecture about AIDS in Africa with a voiceover by Gwyneth Paltrow on it. To watch the film you have to watch this thing. EVERY TIME.

I'm just sick of watching anti-piracy adverts on DVDs I buy. Each time I see one I'm pushed a little closer to just pirating everything.

Hopefully, the worst one ("you wouldn't steal a car", etc) will not be shown any more as it contains pirated music and the composer is taking legal action against it.

I think that there's acceptable levels of pirating. I don't pirate games (see Cube's reasoning), but I do pirate music. Frankly I wouldn't be able to afford anywhere near the amount of music I buy (well I would probably be able, but not comfortable, and not willing to). So I download music instead. However that most likely would lead to me spending more on music. For example, after listening to Damien Rice I wondered who the female singer on some of his songs was, and found out that it was Lisa Hannigan. Because I was able to download her music for free, I got to discover an artist that I really love. Had I not been able to do that I would not have purchased her CD and discovered her music. After discovering how much I like her, I then bought her second album. So frankly me illegally downloading her music has led to a CD sale, which otherwise wouldn't have happened. (Similarly I have bought 3 Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly/Sam Duckworth albums after downloading one of them.)

There's also the case of live shows. I've seen numerous bands live. Some of which (e.g. Snow Patrol) I would never have considered unless I had downloaded their album. And considering that they will have made far more from the concert ticket than they would have from a CD sale (most of which ends up in the pockets of retailers and labels, the latter of which I have no qualms about reducing the revenue of) I think that piracy can be overall positive for musicians.

There's also the case of certain software. I'm not sure how correct this is (somebody can confirm or deny) but I've heard that piracy is part of Adobe Photoshop's business plan (or if not plan, it benefits them). As this means that most students will learn on, and be comfortable with, PS, meaning that businesses (a much larger part of their business, as illustrated by their discounted student prices of PS) are more likely to purchase PS, as their staff already know how to use it.

Whether you think I'm right or wrong I don't care. I don't consider it wrong, so I'll continue to do it. The legality of it doesn't concern me. I don't refrain from stealing because it's illegal, I refrain from it because I consider it wrong. If I could steal and not get caught, I still wouldn't do it. I'll respect people's opinion if they consider piracy wrong, but don't consider it stealing, as that's completely idiotic.

So basically you only dislike piracy because you're bad at it. :p

You're probably already aware of this, but Chrono Cross is available on the American PSN now.

Well, because of piracy, Photoshop is the photo editing software and the software has essentially become a verb for any digitally edited image.

Your product becoming the name for what the product does is probably the greatest form of advertising - better than anything you can pay for.

Adobe could easily make Photoshop harder to pirate, or make a version for the people who pirate it at an affordable cost, but I'm fairly sure that the current business model is working pretty well for them.

Yeah you'd think getting stuff for free would be easy but noooo not for me lol

Yeah i was aware it was made available on the American PSN, if i still used the PSP i'd download it, i had planned on getting a Vita and using my american account but we all know how thats not allowed now lol

I was hoping it would come to the EU psn via that import PSone classics system, but alas no such luck yet

might dig my PSP out and download it

You say that, but it seems that Adobe are so terrified of photoshop becoming a generic trademark for all kinds of image manipulation software that they have this absurd disclaimer in their small print. I guess they don't want to end up like Hoover, where the company only has a comparatively small market share despite all vacuum cleaners being called hoovers... :heh:

I could go on about how artist make enough money and that there are models that work to make money like the one Louis CK used. But I don't really care and will pirate because I can. And because I have no money.

The other problem is that if I could download a car for free, not deprive someone of it, do it almost entirely anonymously, guarantee there will be no witnesses and have less than a one in a million chance of being caught for it, sure, I'd download a car.
