Fierce_LiNk Posted August 23, 2011 Posted August 23, 2011 This is a topic I've often thought about. But, it was only when I watched this video that I thought to bring it up here. Here is a video for Trauma Team. What actually made it interesting was two things: 1. Seeing that time limits are removed from the game. 2. This comment from a youtube user: The lack of a timer makes sense, really. "Alright, I'm almost done treating this patient. I just need to close him up... suture... and now for the banda-" "Oh my god, five minutes have passed! Leave." "But... I... I just need to apply the b-" "Did I STUTTER? Leave! Leave and never come back! You'll never practice medicine again! DX " "But... but I... D: " I cried laughing at it. Mostly because there is truth to it. You can be on the last step of the operation, and if the timer runs out, it's game over. However, I actually really like having the time limit. It adds urgency to the game. I don't think the co-op would be anywhere near as fun on New Blood if the time limit had been removed. Otherwise, you could just take your time and...probably do it all very easily. Of course, there's a time limit in many games of all genres. Platformers, racing games, even fighters. What do we think?
Hamishmash Posted August 23, 2011 Posted August 23, 2011 I don't see the point of timers in some games. It's only in Mario games for tradition really. In Resident Evil Mercenaries it works really great though, and hanging onto those last seconds is exciting. I really does depend on the game. Though yes like you said, if it's going to be in a game like Trauma Center they need to at least acknowledge WHY their is a time limit. Like "If you don't fix them in 5 minutes, I'm bringing in our star doctor to replace you."
Retro_Link Posted August 23, 2011 Posted August 23, 2011 I'm not a fan of Time Limits in games... unless they really have to be there... i.e. you have 3mins to get out before the building explodes! But yeah I hate them really, they add this horrible additional pressure... I didn't like seeing they'd made a return in Super Mario Land 3D. I think this is really because I like to enjoy my games, do them at my own pace, I don't like feeling that extra control on the situation (depending on the genre I'd like to be able to explore/run-around) ... same reason I don't like it when you have an 'air limit' for underwater levels!... stress! :p
darksnowman Posted August 23, 2011 Posted August 23, 2011 ... same reason I don't like it when you have an 'air limit' for underwater levels!... stress! :p The stuff of nightmares. Audio I dislike arcade racers where its all about getting to the next checkpoint. Its like... just let me finish the race, I don't care if I come last. (Outrun is the exception.)
