And I have both a 1 year old iMac and an iPhone 4. I like them, but I don't think I'm better of with them than I would be with other products.

Some of the best UX (user experience) and UI (user interface) design around mixed in with outstanding product design and excellent marketing is the reason Apple products are so popular, and rightly so. A missing feature or technical ability compared to its competitors isn't important in the grand scheme of things.

What's not to get? It's not like Apple is the first company to dominate a market primarily because of the quality of their brand and marketing. Porsche, Rolex, Nike shoes. McDonalds?

They are brilliant at taking something old (webcam chat) and renaming it to make it sound like a brand new and exiting thing that they invented (Facetime).

Apple for me has always been about an easier UI and the non-integration of the OS with Internet access. Cuts down on the viruses, and as I visit A LOT of porn sites and alternative humour sites, it really helps.

If a random site asked me if I wanted to download thisisnotavirus.apk I would probably click "no". And if I was dumb enough to do that I would then have to choose to install the thisisnotavirus.apk and give it permission to do whatever it wants to the phone (which would be changing my settings and sending all my data to their servers). Oh, and you also would have needed to go into settings and tick the box saying "Install Applications from Unknown Sources" before it would let you install it.

 

So I wouldn't exactly call it an issue.

When Tim was in Charge of the site, he gave me the DS news to break. I updated the site and then about an hour later he sent me an email with the all the European press releases... despite the virus protection I had, I got nicely infected with Lovesan and some other Trojans. From Tim!

 

My parents used my PC once without my permission and when I had taken Norton off to reload. They completely cacked everything up in about 30 minutes.

 

I'd really rather not have to worry about some asswipe in Wisconsin and his vendetta against Microsoft when looking at Swedish Hamster Porn.

In the tablet sphere of things, I think that they are pretty unchallenged, especially as they are 1 generation of hardware ahead of almost everyone. Google haven't got Honeycomb sorted properly from what people tell me and we are STILL waiting to see reasonably priced hardware from the competing manufacturers.

 

Phone wise and computer wise, I totally get ya. Although you could argue that a tablet would fit most people's needs to replace a laptop/PC.

What you're missing here is that the vast majority of people in this forum, yourself included, are experts at computers. The vast majority of people outwith the forum, those who don't use computers much, are not and don't have a clue what they are doing. If something asks for their permission to install on their computer they're going to do it regardless of what it is. They'll have been trying to download something anyway so will give it permission.

Was the first one really that thick and big as opposed to the new one now?

 

I know thinner and faster are better, but is it a noticeable difference? I haven't seen a new one IRL so I can't compare mentally in my head, so just wondering what the purchasers of the iPad 2 think.

It's a fair bit thinner yes, and noticeably lighter, just about.

 

The problem being with mine, is my home button has started to act up and will occasioanlly stop working, which is quite annoying.

In terms of thinness and lightness, it really is a big difference. I was the same as you, wondering whether it would really matter, but holding the new one and then holding the old one, the old one feels massive!

 

As for your issue, Ronnie, I advise you take it into an Apple Store and complain. They'll probably give you a new one. Also, have you checked the screen for light bleeding? Worth doing, a lot of the first batch have problems when viewing an all black screen. Try saving a black image and viewing it in the dark. If there are any spots at the edge of the screen that are uneven you can get a replacement easily.

I bought it from Currys though, would the apple store really give me a new one? It's such a shame because I see no evidence of any light bleed. There may be, but I've not noticed it. And no dead pixels or anything so it's a shame this problem has just cropped up. The replacement may well be worse.

Quick question for those in the know... does the iTunes backup preserve apps and in particular, app data/game saves etc? ie. assuming I backup and sync everything before returning my iPad, will the new one be identical to the first, in terms of camera roll photos, game saves, app data (like written text documents etc)

Yeah it keeps everything just as it was on the original iPad. If you do a backup before the swap then restore the new one it will be as if you turned it off then on again. It backs up everything.

You have to make sure you restore it from the iPad 2 settings you already have saved. When you plug it in for the first time you'll have a choice of whether to back up from a previous device (there will be a list) or start from scratch. As long as you choose the last iPad 2 restore you have it will just be like your old iPad.

 

So yes, basically

 

I made the mistake of deciding to take a few apps off my set-up when I went from iPod Touch to iPhone, lost all my game saves and other in-app data, which was a pain in the ass.

Okay, using safari, when I have a few pages up and running, if I'm looking st one page then go back to the new page, it RELOADS the page, which is really annoying. Especially on say this forum if I'm doing a post, then I go somewhere else to get a picture or a link or whatever, come back and it reloads it, wiping out everything I'd previously written. It's really annoying and wondered if there was a way to make it stop

It's because of the memory I think. The iPad 1 doesn't have a huge amount, meaning it can't 'remember' everything at once (all your open tabs and apps etc).

 

The best way to solve it is to close some apps - open up the multi-tasking menu and close as many as you can. As you remove them it should free up some memory, meaning the iPad will be able to save the tabs rather than needing to reload them all the time.

 

See if that works, anyway, and let us know how you get on
