Ashley Posted September 23, 2010 Posted September 23, 2010 Nothing like leaving this to the last minute.... In about 10 hours I leave the house to sort out my grandad's PC. I'd like some answer to this before then if possible: His PC is in a worst state than Lilo. I checked it a while ago and some malware/spyware/whatever piece of shit had gotten on and dug itself deep (wouldn't open up the internet, wouldn't allow you to access the registry etc etc). I'm going to format it and start again (again...again) and install Norton (he bought it). What else can I put on there that ISN'T a limited trial, that is fairly foolproof and that would stop him being plagued with viruses again? It's mostly his ignorance that leads to this but fairly often it gets bogged down in crap. Thanks in advance.
Nolan Posted September 23, 2010 Posted September 23, 2010 If you're installing Norton it's not really recommended to mix and match Anti-Virus programs, they can conflict and cause even more trouble.
Ashley Posted September 24, 2010 Author Posted September 24, 2010 Ah okay. Well if Norton will cover all bases that's fine. Didn't know if there would be any other tips/hints/whatever to follow. Much appreciated
Cube Posted September 24, 2010 Posted September 24, 2010 I'd install Avast, AVG Free or Windows Security Essentials. Norton just isn't built for home PCs.
Mr_Odwin Posted September 24, 2010 Posted September 24, 2010 You could set him up with OpenDNS and use their Web Content Filtering service to block all sorts of stuff. "No grandad, you can't look at porn anymore."
Ten10 Posted September 24, 2010 Posted September 24, 2010 I would just take the norton back if he can, not really worth buying antivirus programs in my eyes. I still recommend comodo internet security: http://www.comodo.com/home/internet-security/free-internet-security.php Should kill any nasties before they have a chance to install, just don't install the hopsurf bar during installation, even though thats how some of these free products bring back revenue to the company. (AVG free does something like this too)

I set him up with Avast and AVG last time this problem happened... Not saying Norton is/will be better but been there, done that. (AVG free does something like this too) Too late. Plus my mother's partner bought a 3 license copy anyway. I kept telling him he doesn't need it but its his money. Anyway the computer was formatted and Norton installed. Only problem was he couldn't remember his gmail password nor his security answer (well it's what is his wife's middle name but it wasn't accepting it) and they didn't give the okay to the other route when you give them a load of info (such as the date he joined gmail, who remembers that kind of stuff?)
Konfucius Posted September 24, 2010 Posted September 24, 2010 (edited) You could show him how to handle sandboxie. This way he could still do all sorts of shit on the internet and clear the sandbox afterwards - no damage done. Although if you don't set up any write-enabled folders his downloads will be gone too, unless he knows how to recover them... You could always install Linux Also Spyware Blaster and Spybots immunize function are pretty useful. Edited September 24, 2010 by Konfucius
