DmC: Devil May Cry

Recommended Posts

Wait, the game's actually called "DmC: Devil May Cry"? I thought that was just the logo...

Even I have to admit, after playing the demo, it actually seems quite an enjoyable game! I mean, as a game it's good, but it still doesn't feel right for a Devil May Cry game. Mind you, I don't think the controls have changed too much. Although I like the new weapon switching system, it's nice and fluid. If I had the money, I'd definitely try and get this on day one.

The whole "Nephilim" angle pisses me off though, as they've got it completely wrong! Nephilim are meant to be the offspring of angel fathers and human mothers, NOT Angels and Demons! I know it's picky, but I absolutely hate it when people get things like this completely wrong.

Oh, and my favorite thing about this reboot is the fact that Combichrist contributed to the soundtrack. I'm a massive fan of their music!

Pretty much all the review are positive. Metro gave it an 8 and Gamestm a 9 so its day one for me, well not day one as I'm broke but I'll get it Friday.

Suprised to see alot of the hardcore DMC fans at neogaf who have done nothing but bitch about the game turn around and says its pretty damn good.

Yup, they were slating NT since day one. Personally I dont think they are a bad developer at all. I really enjoyed Heavenly Sword and Enslaved.

Hm nope, the fans of the series absolutely hate this game. This put me off buying it:

After reading all the backlash I'm very close to purchasing this out of spite. I can't think of another instance where people got so mad over something being positively reviewed.

Having played through the whole Devil May Cry series recently, just to remind myself how awesome the originals were, it's really hard to fathom why there was a need for a reboot. DMC2 was terrible, no question, but DMC4 is actually a joy to play, dare I say even more than DMC3 and DMC1 is just a classic. All of them have fantastic replay value too and the PC port of DMC4 runs like a dream and is available for £1.69 on Green man gaming. In fact, DMC4 was a commercial success, selling the most in the series.

DmC is just anaemic in comparison and the points raised in Shorty's post are actually valid.

Capcom are a shadow of their former selves. Their recent releases and choices are a clear indicator of that. IMO their only saving grace has been Dragon's Dogma but I have no faith in how that will be handled in the future.

DMC4 might of been fine to play but that bullshit backtracking and fighting the same bosses again was just terrible.

Anyway got the game earlier than expected, pretty damn good. As for complaints about difficulty come again after you've unlocked the harder difficulty levels.

Backtracking is really annoying yes, but to be fair, it was largely present in the previous games and fighting the same bosses again has also been present.

If you play the DMC4 in a perfectionist state of mind, you will find it so rewarding. Mastering the techniques in the game, and executing them perfectly is sublime. Better than in DMC3.

If feels like the people who really delved into what made the DMC games so much fun, rather than aiming to 'just beat it' are the ones that feel this latest entry is a phony.

And as for difficulty, the franchise being hard but rewarding and fair (somewhat as the camera could cheat you) was one of it's trademarks. If it's easy from the outset, you are being robbed of that sense of achievement.

The backtracking didn't bother me in DMC4 at all. Some games have you backtracking all the way through, this one had it in a 50% split. Not much different to completing a game then doing an NG+, except they mixed it up a bit and you had to do it in reverse. Also you got back through the game much quicker than you reached the end in the first place.

...I may just have to dig DMC4 out. Or Bayonetta. Yeah... I'll just play that.

The latests Capcom has done is what they've do to celebrate Mega Man's 25th anniversary is

anyway i am more looking forward to play MGRR and Bayonetta 2 than this game.

I really should get round buying the Devil May Cry HD collection.

Hmm, I bought DMC4 before Christmas, and after having played Bayonetta / Dante's Inferno, it felt really clunky and boring. I thought it would be in the same action category and thus enjoyable, but didn't like it at all...

HD Collection is where it's at, just totally avoid DMC2. If you never played it, be thankful, don't satisfy that curiosity.

And as for that megaman vid...I can't believe that is real. Saw a pic earlier and thought it was a joke.

Top youtube quote:

Mega Man is dead. Really actually fully dead.

DmC is a shell of it's former self.

Inafune left. Clover is gone and took Kamiya with it.

Two Mega Man games cancelled. Rehashed fighting games with DLC up the ass. Resident Evil wants the CoD audience.

What a way to go, Capcom. They're on the same level as EA.

Give DMC4 a chance, the combat mechanics from the previous games are intact and at their finest in this game. It's really a question of perfecting your skills and pushing for excellence, moreso than in the other games.

Okay, just played the demo and I was very, very impressively entertained. The levels are just the right amount of crazy, the fighting system easy to adapt any way you please and the enemies have decent level of invention on them. The character & writing slots itself in just the right spot of stupid/ridiculous. I'm a little unsure about Dante's jailbait-ey sidekick but this would be more of a problem if he also wasn't clearly designed as a slice of walking oily pornography for teens.

Overall this seems like a game rich in it's own joy and I am now sitting within a breath of running out and making a purchase, having actively tried and failed to generate any interest whatsoever in the series before. Might go buy Enslaved on the cheap too.

Have to say I'm in the same boat. Though I haven't played the demo yet, I've been impressed by the reviews and chat I've heard about the game on Invisible Walls. I haven't played a game in the series before so the changes don't really bother me like they may some (although I prefer the old look of Dante... actually I'm not sure, he kinda looks a bit dated now).

Time to download the demo I think.

And yeah, might well give Enslaved a look for £10.

Played a couple of missions.

The art style is great, I love it.

Battles are so much fun and - as I'm a bit rusty in this genre - I already died once at the normal difficulty. :(

Money well spent.

I had some friends round earlier, and they bought dmc round. After getting to about mission 6/7, I have to admit, it's actually very bloody good!

The demo is definitely the weakest level, from what I've played so far, and it really doesn't do Dante's character justice. In the demo, he seems like a whiny arrogant tosser, but there's a lot more to his character in the full game. Now, I just need to afford the game for myself... :heh:

Feels like I have played a totally different game. IMO the controls are uncomfortable, responsive but just so alien to me.

Even starting out on nephilim difficulty, there is no challenge so no satisfaction when you achieve good results.

The level design I find annoying, weapon design equally so.

And the frame rate is abhorent. 30fps?! Granted though the pc version is 60fps but with Capcom, you have to be wary with their ports, at least until someone has been a good guinea-pig and given favourable feedback.

Oh, boss fights are a joke too, no where near as challenging, and thus as satisfying as from the previous installments.

All this and I didn't even touch upon the character.

If this game had a different licence/character I would probably be able to appreciate it in it's own right, but still not buy it just like Enslaved.

After playing all the other DMC installments the controls do feel weird. That's why I died once. But the more I play, the more I get used to them and the more I realise how many combos there are.

after I got those freaking hands of doom (can't remember their name just now). You can switch between these and the Arbiter during fights, and it's pretty sweet.

For me, there is. Even when playing on the normal difficulty. I've been kinda good at DMC 3 back in the days, but I lost all the skills. So whenever I finish something in DmC, it feels good.

The level design I find annoying, weapon design equally so.

Well, I like it :)

A bit annoying, I have to admit. But not enough to ruin the experience (for me :p).

Again, I felt satisfaction when beating the first boss (the second I already knew from the demo), but I already elaborated why.

All this and I didn't even touch upon the character.

Nah, I like the 'new' Dante. He reminds of the one from DMC 3.

Bet you anything, that if it had, those hardcore DMC fans would cry: "RIPOFF!". :D

Gameplay, presentation and story (as far as I can tell) are pretty good when you look at DmC objectively.

I do see all your points, but I can't relate to them. I'm having a blast playing this game and I like the majority of it :)

Have you played the full game?

I find his need for profanity and general attitude to be the big differences, and they annoy me quite a bit.

I dunno...I mean there are a few games of this type that do things in their own way such as Darksiders (quite a bit different in some ways tho) and Ninja Gaiden and people don't view those are rip offs.

It would be a very diffderent style of game if it didn't have the DmC license attached to it, and maybe for the better imo.

Have you played the full game?

Nope. just the demo and I don't think I ever will. I rebought DMC4 and am loving it. Also bought the HD collection, finished DMC1 (finished on ps2 as well back in the day), DMC2 is unplayable to me and 2/3 thru DMC3 (again finished on the ps2 back in the day, normal and special edition). So yeah, for now that will sate my DMC lust.

Hm, you're right, but both Dante's have more in common than they differ from each other. But I see what you mean. It comes down to personal preference again ;)

Not sure about this. I mean, the fighting system does not differ too much from the older games. You have more options to chain combos together (being able to switch weapons on the fly, grappling towards enemies, pulling enemies towards you, and the aerial combat is sweet) but in the core it pretty much is the same.

Maybe DmC would have benefited if it was a different IP altogether, but I think that would mainly be because people (fans) wouldn't have started a shitstorm to rip this game apart during the development.

I take DmC as a reboot, and not as a follow up or sequel. And for what it is, it is a damn fine game.

I rebought DMC4 and am loving it.

Heh, I didn't like DMC4 that much :D

just the demo and I don't think I ever will

That's a shame. But it probably is for the best. If you didn't enjoy the demo you might/will not enjoy the full game.

Finished it just now.

Yeaaah, it was so obvious you had to fight Vergil, but hey..It's DmC and Vergil plays a big role in this game.

His attacks were very DMC 3-ish. Love it :)
