3DS Console Discussion

Haven't they confirmed Kid icarus is out this year too? Thought I read that in the news today!

Nintendo also need to speak with shops. Supermarkets are terrible, but at least it makes more sense. But game station have NO EXCUSE for mixing their DS and 3DS games together. Are the fucking retarded? They're a game specialist shop and they're doing this! Crazy! I'm surprised at how confused everyone seems to be with regards to the 3DS being a brand new device. Nintendo must look at the Wii U and think about a name change :) Or at least be extremely aware for its marketing.

I really hope people snap up the device now and it becomes crazy successful, so developers/publishers really get on board with it. This will help. And with Mario Kart Super Circuit coming out, I hope nintendo solve their multiplayer out for download games!

In fairness there's probably not enough games to justify the space in a lot of small shops at the moment. I know when I was at Game it was a struggle when a new console came out.

Nintendo played everyone like a boss, including Sony. Think about it. The Vita is the superior competitor hardware wise, designed to combat the 3DS in price directly. To get to that 250 pricetag Sony must of cut the Vitas power AND plan to sell at a loss. Now Nintendo goes and reduces the 3DS price by a shitload and still make a strong profit! Nintendo managed to weaken the opposing hardware and still left Sony in a position where it cannot drop vitas price much. Nintendo played them Hard.

It got me thinking, i must admit that's pretty clever. The 3DS was over priced but most of us still went out and got one (20 free games woooot). To expensive for the casual gamer, i think the price was set high knowing that a large majority of the core gamers would purchase one.

I guess Nintendo were waitting on Sony to price their Vita before slashing the price. This isn't an act of desperation it's Nintendo playing it smart.

I have said before that Nintendo's only option was to drop the price significantly; it is just not affordable. I'm happy they've been brave enough to do this - Nintendo simply aimed far too high with the 3DS price and that gamble simply didn't work - people, pressed financially, were not going to pay. The price needs to settle around £129 mark. I would like to see it lower still - £100 seemed to be a magic mark for the DSlite. The 3DS is a great piece of kit, but it is a one-trick pony.

Hardware price is only a fraction of the problems facing Nintendo; there needs to be a complete overhaul of the product in my opinion:

I earlier mentioned the branding; the DS moniker has confused consumer (really interesting to see the adverts are now mentioning this). They need to drop the 'S' - Nintendo 3D. Splash out on a lenticular sleeve for the box too. Maybe this will come with a hardware refresh; but its needed sooner than that.

There's a huge movement to discredit the 3DS at the moment; health scares, hinges, Amazon. Nintendo need some effective PR and they're just not on the ball with it. In an age of instant news via the internet, there PR guys need a kick in the balls. As soon as something breaks, they need to get out a response.

We've all bemoaned about some glaring omissions and bizarre choices on the device - the lack of any messaging services, invites and crazy eShop prices. Messaging and invites should have been there out of the box - so why its taking so long, i'll never know. For safeguarding youngsters, any IP based messaging services could automatically copy in parents to an email or web-based service. Invites could easily be done via the Notification light (I have no need to see my friends being online, only if they are playing the same game I am). eShop prices need revising, I was saying only yesterday, I'd happily spend a tenner on Game and Watch - if they were priced under £1, single screen NES/GB games, G&W should be Nintendo's answer to the iOS market.

And don't get me started on the shit they've got in the Nintendo Video section - FFS.

The price was definitely set high to milk the early-adopters imo. These free games would cost nintendo nothing to give away really, and would not be worth 80 euros anyway.

That depends how you want to look at it.

They sold less than a million worldwide in 3 months following the 3.6 million at launch... I'm guessing the core gamer market must have shrunk dramatically in that case if they've already exhausted it that they need to cut prices.

Had the 3DS been seling record numbers week after week, they wouldn't have needed to drop the price until the launch of Vita as they attempt to steal some thunder.

20 free games might sound like value for us, but for them, it doesn't mean much. People probably wouldn't have brought the NES games and no one will get a chance to buy the GBA games anyway. It's not really costing them anything.

Desperation might be a touch strong but no one can really think this was all part of some big master plan by Nintendo.

This whole 20 free games had better be available in Switzerland, otherwise I'm going to be VERY annoyed. I mean, I really think that it's a great thing that Nintendo is doing, and shows a lot of customer appreciation, but if as most things we don't get it here, it just isn't fair.

I'm assuming this means we're going to get downloadable GBA games on the 3DS? Because that would really be about time and would go a long way in swaying me towards finally buying a 3DS. I doubt Nintendo would go to the trouble of emulating GBA games on the 3DS if they weren't planning on selling them.

Though this being Nintendo, I guess you never know. :heh:

Hopefully there will be another Yoshi game and not some iffy spin off.

Nintendo has shown time and time again that they have very little interest in Yoshi as a brand, by making terrible spin-off after terrible spin-off. Yoshi's Island DS was handed off to a second-rate developer who did a terrible job and came nowhere close to the quality of the original Yoshi's Island. At this point, I'd rather Nintendo just left Yoshi alone. :hmm:

There has to be another Golden Sun given how the last one ended and stuff like Fire Emblem and Advance Wars will be putting in an appearance at some point I hope. They could even do a Battalion Wars too if they wanted now the system has the grunt.

Speaking of Fire Emblem, they could just release the second DS game on the 3DS and finally let us lowly westerners play it. It's not like we can expect anything impressive graphically from the series on the 3DS anyway.

So the price cut for Europe could be to about £150. Wow. that is awesome.

Not picked up a 3DS yet, but maybe I can ask for one for my birthday and not feel as guilty now.

I didn't relaise the DS game was that bad - I knew Artoon developed it and they made the awful Universal Gravitation game but reviews for YIDS were fairly good on the whole. It may not have come close to the quality of the original but none of Nintendo's own attempts at 2D platformers have since either. They could always get Retro (Studios, not Link) to work on Yoshi game and see what they manage.

I've long since given up expecting anything graphically impressive from the games regardless of device since IS will never have the budget (unless they go back to sprites). That wouldn't bother me at all though if they did release it like that. I'd either be paying £30 for the DS version or £30 for the 3DS version so it makes no odds since I'd end up buying it anyway.

Don't forget, recently Nintendo unlocked the second processor for developers for the 3DS so more impressiveness will occur

Just to say, Vita isn't being sold at a loss.

And to say further ( bad news...) http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2011/07/29/3ds_losses/

"Bloomberg Japan reports today that the new 3DS price point means Nintendo will incur a loss on every system sold. At a press conference in Osaka today, Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata justified this by saying that such major moves were necessary in order to improve fiscal performance next year and beyond."

I thought they were making a killing on the 3ds at first, wasn't there an article someone posted saying it cost 80 euros to make? It's actually amazing that vita is being sold at a profit and 3ds isn't.

Digital Foundry did a rough cost spec on the device and came up with a figure around the £100 mark if I recall.

I take back my harsher statements about the original price-point then :heh: They need to reduce the cost quickly. The original price was too much but the thing that left me bitter was thinking they were making ridiculous profits on it.

Well, this is all pretty good news, in my opinion. The free games are excellent, and we've only heard what half of them are. I'm hoping for Super Mario World and Metroid: Zero Mission as two of the other GBA games. I don't regret buying mine. I've had loads of fun with it, and if I didn't think it was worth the money at the time, I wouldn't have bought it.

It was a fair tactic for Nintendo to bank on the 3D aspect so much. I thought people would be really excited by it. They weren't, but Nintendo just has to dust itself off and get on with it.

Regarding what Lens of Truth said about having so many big 1st-party games so early... yes, this is true, but this is a good thing. Nintendo needs to get out the "bridge" titles like Mario Kart and Super Mario. They still haven't done a Zelda (there's no way OOT counts) or a Metroid. Nintendo can easily keep us amused over the next few years, but games machines really get going when they've been made popular. Then the 3rd-party support carries them, like with the DS.

Aw, man. Now you've made me want another Yoshi's Island. :heh:

Yoshi's Island DS is one of those games where I completely disagree with most reviewers. Most of the art is reused from Yoshi's Island, so the game plays like an expansion pack with worse level design and an annoying baby-switching mechanic that makes collecting everything in levels a chore (eggs only bounce when you use Mario, and so on). It's also a lot harder to the point of feeling unfair a lot of the time (and the lack of items means you can't replenish your stars at the end of a difficult level). The developers don't seem to have played Yoshi's Island, and the few new sprites all lack the thick black outlines that were such a big part of the original game, and many of the sprites are outright terrible (this is Bowser, though you really need to see him in motion to appreciate how awful he looks).

I wish they'd stuck with sprites for Fire Emblem. The pre-rendered 3D look of Shadow Dragon is not attractive at all.

But yeah, the game would probably sell about the same on the 3DS as it would on the DS. Fire Emblem is very niche and it's not a series that's going to attract a lot of new fans. It'd be a cheap way to bolster the 3DS library with a 'core' title, but I'm not holding out hope for a release outside Japan. :hmm:

It's too bad downloadable DS titles for the 3DS isn't possible, because that would be a great way to bring over games that were never released over here.

I've come to London for the weekend and left my charger at home - ARGH! Can I buy new ones at game? I presume so. Isn't it the same as the dsi charger?

Yes, the DSI's charger works with the 3DS.

anyone know if you actually have to purchase anything from the e-shop to become an ambassador? do you simply have to just connect to it and then you are part of it?

I believe it's just connect, but if you're unsure, just download Pokédex 3D. It's free and counts as a purchase

Except it misses facts and is more negative than it should be. This isn't Nintendo's worst launch by far

I think the main area that that Gamesradar feature misses the point is on the launch lineup. Yes, we were tantalised with the likes of MSG3D, RE: Revelations, a new Kingdom Hearts, etc. but they were never explicitly stated as being released at launch or in the launch window and Gamesradar seems to think they were, thus leading to a terrible launch. The fact is, all that that particular section of the feature has done is show how 'greedy', if you will, gamers (and said journalist of that feature) have become in clamouring for games in unrealistic time frames.

Not really Nintendo's fault for wanting to voice the support that's coming to the console but rather the fault of gamers and journalists for unrealistically expecting these games (which were nothing more than tech demos at that current time) to be available for launch 9 months later and then moaning when they don't turn up. ::shrug:
