I still don't get the difference/need for bronze/silver/gold, though I understand platinum standing for 'completed this shit'.

It's the same as Achievements having different point scores attached in correspondence to their difficulty/level of achievement, just more standardised.

Trophies still work on a scoring system, this is just kept behind the scenes. The easiest way to look at it is that each Trophy adds a certain amount of XP — let's say 5 for Bronze, 10 for Silver, 20 for Gold — and when you reach certain overall boundaries you level up, just like an RPG. That's the number next to the star below and is the PS3's equivalent to an overall Gamerscore:

On the right you have the break down of Trophies by gradation which gives you an idea of how the person plays, whereas there's no real way to tell from someone's Gamerscore whether they complete their games or just play the first third of a lot of titles. For instance from my breakdown you can infer that I'm something of a completionist loser, which is a fairly accurate summation.

Although apparently Molly would sleep with me, so all hope is not lost.

Anyway, who wants to give me moderation powers so that I can lock this thread?

Truly my dreams are crushed like so many crystal butterflies cast into a black hole of despair.

Now, are we going to Yale or continue to fail?

Thankfully I don't know anyone that boring.

Yeah, it's mostly for your own benefit - and for going to youself "yeaaah I got more points on this game than this person! Unurface! They only have more points on that game than me because they clearly play games too much..."

Yes, it's all conceited, silly, useless bollocks, and not really what should be the defining factor between consoles... So I guess I'll lock this later today, give y'all a chance to get any last cents off your chest.

I like trophies. They seem to reward skill more than sheer number of games owned compared to achievements. They can be fun to get and extend the replay value of many games, what when you try to do all the different things. It takes a bit of a moron to point out their pointless really; of course they are. That doesn't mean they're not fun to get.

But aren't trophies and achievments the just same in multiformat games?

People are pointing out that the only difference between trophies and achievements is how it displays pointless numbers. The things themselves are fun.

Achievements, trophies, in-game rewards... they all offer small, fun challenges in most cases that can help prolong the life of a game, they all essentially 'do' the same thing so lets live and let live eh?

There's more to life than this...

I'm looking to get a cheap PS3 (second hand pref) but I was more leaning on getting the old premium, is it worth it or would any version do?

From my experience I would recommend buying the thing new, or with at least someone that has a receipt ensuring around 6 months of spare warranty.

I got mine second hand from JonSt, works just fine and I don't see myself filling the hard drive very quickly - because I have most of the multiplatform library I'll ever want on the 360 already.

It's worth it if you plan on actually playin PS2 games. Other than that, the new ones are definitely better.

I was listening to a Gamestation employee talking to a customer about this and his reply was basically "Why would you buy a powerful console like the PS3 and play ps2 games?". He also mentioned that the newer PS3s have removable fans so that you can clean them and keep them running better/quieter.

Plus it's not like PS2s are expensive, so you could pick one up if you really wanted to play ps2 games.

OR you could have only 1 console that does what both do. It's simple, really. Why wouldn't you want to play PS2 games if there's so many great ones? (and better ones than on the PS3 as of yet on top of that)

I'm not saying it's better, but if you want to play PS2 games, then by all means do get a Premium.

Yep, it's worth getting the premium because it'll play around 60% of PS2 games, and usually most of the ones I want to play. I've happily put my PS2 away and there's more shelf space.

Plus you can save them all to a huge HDD rather than crappy memory cards, and use the PS3 controller to play them.
