I want a PC. I want to play games that look fairly shiney. This is probably all I will use it for mainly.

I've been using a Mac for the past 2-3 years so I don't have a bloody clue where to start.

Can anyone recommend any pre-built boxes? Or a nice build on one of those sites where you put in the parts and they build it? I'm not looking to build one myself. All I need is the box.

I don't really want to spend any more than £600

Thanks.

What type of games you after playing? Are the high spec games or low? Do you run other programs whilst playing games?

I'd go looking on ebuyer/play that sort of area to start with, there's alot of spec you can get for 600quid.

Would you want windows 7? A monitor to go with the package or just a tower?

/overload.

Well the only game I have really been playing for the last year or so is world of warcraft. Might play some other RPG's. But then I know some people who play Race Driver: Grid, and I know that takes some power. Would also like to play some shooting games, but I have no specifics in mind.

If I am playing a game, that is all I will be doing.

Just the tower.

I imagine Windows 7 will be the most future proof?

I guess the main problem is graphics cards. So many to choose from and so little clue about any of them :P

Upgrade the graphics card to a 4850 and add Windows 7 Home Premium. If you need a monitor then try this;

Bare in mind though DinoPC don't supply much with the computer. You'll need your own keyboard, mouse and speakers.

Not a bad deal, but keep in mind that an OS is extra and I'm not sure if they throw in any extras such as a mouse or keyboard. A monitor would certainly need to be factored into the price as well unless you have one you're content with.

Cool. Cos I might look to order today. Just want to be sure it's something I won't regret buying. I should get 3 years out of it right?

No, it's no problem as long as it's LCD (an old CRT just won't really provide you with a good enough display for the graphics quality you're paying for, although it would still work, of course)

Why could there be some sort of problem using my current monitor which is a few years old?

*points to shorty* what he said, but yeah I didn't realise you'd have one you'd want to use!

Monitors are relatively cheap to buy mind you, I got this lg one from argos for £99!

Perfectly reasonable machine for the money really

If you know a student or indeed ARE a student, do yourself a favour and get a cheap copy of Windows 7. That said, they have the oem version of 7 Home Premium for £65 there as it is, which is pretty damn reasonable

Been having a look around and this caught my eye:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-210-OK

Good deal?

Don't want to sound like a broken record but they'll do the same system for £80 cheaper, it comes with a 3 year warranty and the motherboard is better.

Overclockers aren't particularly cheap, never have been. PCOption and PC Specialist might be worth a look though.

Plus you can get student office for about the same price (£40 ish quid I believe?)

If I downgrade that to the have the same cpu, and stick in the graphics card I want, I can get it for £420. Just under £500 with the OS. Nice one.

Looked up that student offer. Well we have a PC with Vista but are waiting on a replacement graphics card which won't arrive until after the offer ends :-/ It all seems unclear to me anyway, is the full version they're offering or just the upgrade?

Think i'll give it a few more days to think it through now.

A quality CRT can provide a better picture though:heh:

Well you might like to know i've taken the plunge, and expect to have a PC within 2 weeks.

It will be the first (working) windows platform i've had in about 5 years! And it will be the first Windows PC I won't be sharing with family, so I can keep it nice and tidy. Awesome.

That second one McPhee suggested off dinopc.

Sure is! I've had this Mac Mini all to myself for the last 2 years and it's great having access whenever you want! I'll still be using it for general net access and playing music and such, but it's lack of available software (and power needed to run what software there is) has led me to get this PC to have alongside it.
