General Switch Discussion

Recommended Posts

Snipperclips is a great showcase for the positives of the joycons. I have found swapping my Switch and BT Ultra HD box has reduced the interference - the signal is more direct now and doesn't go past the hot BT box now. It is also a foot further from my router.

I have been thinking maybe they should have had the joycons fixed to the screen (like Wii U) then relied on Pro controllers for TV mode. Everyone would find this a lot simpler, and I'm not really convinced there's any downside other than the increased cost of buying 2 Pro controllers. Then you basically have the TV mode of PS4/Xbox One, but with amazing handheld portability. The screen is too small for 2 player same-screen really, which was a key reason for joycons. I'll get a second Pro controller soon, the joycons are just a bonus extra really, but hopefully they will lead to some unique experiences.

Overall I'm 9/10 happy with everything as long as they continue to add features to the platform as it's incredibly basic.

I've had a chance to have a play with mine now.

I'm really on the fence on whether I like it or not. I'm not sold on the joy cons, they just feel quite fiddly even in the grip so think I will need a pro controller if I stick with it. It's also a lot smaller than I was expecting and really disappointed with the frame rate drops in Zelda, hoping it's not a sign that we will struggle to see games get to 900p and a stable frame rate.

At the moment it won't keep me off the Xbox much but it's a premium feeing piece of kit so if Nintendo can support it with a volume of quality software and a great online service then there's plenty of hope it can grow as a platform.

The resolution thing is interesting. I think people said splatoon 2 at the demo events was running at 720p docked.

Really not sure why docked wouldn't see an increase in resolution if the clock speeds are increased?

I dont find it comfortable at all. Only time I plan to use it that way is when someone is round and I need a second controller.

Am I right to say that the Switch is a bit of a mess?

Joycons disconnecting, poor wifi, straps getting stuck when you put them on the wrong way... wow, I'm actually happy I didn't get the thing.

Nope. Read through this thread and you'll see glowing reviews, and a few nitpicks. Sure there are issues (as with any console launch) but the majority seem to love it.

Is it the buttons/small grip size? I love it! Though have yet to hold a pro controller.

Yeah I dont massively like the size but also having the right thumbstick directly under the buttons never feels right either.

My impressions after a couple of days.

It's amazing that they have managed to fit a console into that device.

My WiFi like others have mentioned only seems have 1 bar. Only time will tell if that's going to be an issue.

I have not had any Joycon issues.

The dock is a pain in the arse as most TV cabinets just aren't designed for something that stands up.

The Joycon grip is very clever that it feels just like a controller. The Joycons on there own would only really be any good for motion gaming or simple games like snipperclips. I can't imagine anyone playing Mario kart with one of them.

Obviously loving Zelda. Just a shame having friend education a load of you guys that there isn't really any online games to play yet. Is snipperclips online? I'll get this bundle next week.

He's had a shave. But the mole is there. It is him! Where's he disappeared to?

No idea. He started hiding his online status on PSN the other week ( was still playing as he was earning trophies ) and then eventually hid his trophies as well.

He did say a while ago he needs some personal time. I'm sure he'll be back with an amazing new signature before we know it.

So after day two with the console I'm still really impressed by the concept and the execution of the Switch.

As the home console/hand held hybrid this is a phenomenal piece of kit and, as I've mentioned before, suits my life style to a tee.

I've yet to have any issues with the joy cons or wireless (bar set up as the TV dock was right in front of my router, funny I couldn't get a signal...:P) yet it is bare bones. I usually quite like just having a new console on, flicking through menus etc but there is nothing here bar a basic eshop set up, so it's either been Zelda or nothing for me today! Which isn't a bad thing...

My main hope now is that if we aren't getting multimedia stuff then we just get great games, things like Monster Hunter 5 that are going to shift consoles and make it an appealing console.

However in my own short sighted world I'm just as happy playing Nintendo games and indie games, chuffed Yooka Laylee has been confirmed!

And unless I get swept aboard the launch hype train (looking at you, Bomberman) honestly Zelda is going to last me ageees; anyone moaning about a lack of games isn't doing life right!

Overall as an unashamed Nintendo fan and gamer I'm really happy with the Switch and what it means for being able to enjoy gaming still in the future :)

I was wondering where he's been... Didn't want to bother him about it though. If you're reading this though @RedShell, all the best! : peace:

Yeah I know I said I'd wait but totally just ordered myself a neon Switch.... and now waiting O_O

Must admit that the reports on the hardware, Zelda and the slate of indie games has really swung it for me. I think that I'll be busy on it for ages as I don't really tire of Mario Kart as I play it mostly casually. I think it's going to be my local multiplayer console and my PC will be my online gaming/socialising machine. Helps that I'm away a lot on business too.

Additional thoughts after a few day(s);

- Screen is superb.

- Playing off TV is great. Feels like a better experience than Wii U.

- Not yet played in bed, but looking forward to it.

- Separate controller to unit, on off TV play is great.

- Whilst friend codes are cumbersome, I actually didn't struggle entering a whole load of friend requests at once, I picked up the unit, took it over to the computer (desk) and tapped them in on the touch screen as I held it, making it very easy as I went through the spreadsheet for NE users - please add me if you'd like.

- Love the colour of the controllers.

- RMX is fun.

- No analogue buttons is a damn shame.

- Joy cons are a little uncomfortable.

- Connectivity issues, or whatever is going on with my joycon is whack.

- Not many games.

- OS is very basic, needs a lot more...everything.

- Needs some, what I would call extremely basic services - Netflix, YouTube, browser.

- Bomberman is quite disappointing, not intuitive to setup multiplayer, controls are a bit loose.

Overall very happy with the purchase, but moreso eager to get dem games.

Certainly looking forward to Zelda.

My impressions after nearly a weekend of use:

- The system is sleek and does not look like a crappy toy. It looks and feels like a quality piece of kit.

- I love the "gimmick" - Switch

- Handheld is amazing. I remember playing the original Gameboy and its shitty graphics. I never envisaged I would be playing potentially THE Zelda game of my childhood dreams.

- I don't mind the joycons in their grip but much prefer the pro controller.

Some negative points:

- Its basic and has no features. I want Netflix and Spotify. Spotify would have been great whilst playing FAST or Bomberman for example.

- The wi-fi is shockingly bad.

- The fact there are no party chat or messaging service. Both Dazzybee and Aneres were playing Bomberman last night but I had no way of messaging them to find out if they fancied a game with me.

Overall, I am glad that I have gotten one. I am a Nintendo nerd at heart and love a new Nintendo generation and the promise it brings. I am also playing the best version of Zelda too. However, for those that are still on the fence my recommendation is to buy Zelda for the Wii U and buy a Switch later down the line when a few more games are released for it and in a bundle.
