I know Sonic's getting old but damn, does he have to run like he's just shat his pants?

I have to say, I thought the same thing (just didn't want to sound cynical so early on :heh:). I miss the spinning legs animation!

And how did Sonic 3 not feel like a complete game? I mean ok so the final boss was a bit anti-climatic but the rest of the game was lengthy, challenging and overall pretty epic.

For starters, it only had 6 zones, Sonic 2 had 10. And there was a Death Egg at the end, but you never got on it, you just had a fight underneath it.

Sonic 3's levels were longer than Sonic 2's though, plus if you add Sonic & Knuckles levels that makes 13 stages.

Story thus far:

 

It began as Sonic’s animal friends begin disappearing from South Island. Soon Sonic discovers that evil scientist Dr. Eggman has been kidnapping them and turning them into robots to collect the legendary treasure – The Chaos Emeralds. Sonic decides it’s up to him to save them and embarks on a quest to free his animal friends. Sonic battles Eggman through many different zones. Sonic eventually pursues Eggman to Final Zone where the first in many epic battles between them begins. In the end Sonic is victorious and Eggman’s Mecha fly’s away badly damaged. Sonic returns to Green Hill Zone and re-unites with his friends.

 

Their reunion is short lived however, as Eggman resurfaces and begins kidnapping Sonic friends again, in an effort to create more workers to finish his ultimate Weapon – The Death Egg! Teaming up with the newly met, Miles ‘Tails’ Prower, Sonic embarks on a new mission through West Side Island in an effort to free his friends and ensure Eggman does not obtain the 7 Chaos emeralds to fuel the Death Egg.

 

Once the West Side Island is freed, Sonic and Tails eventually board the Tornado and assault the Death Egg itself. After destroying Mecha Sonic, Eggman flees and enters his new Eggman Robot attacking Sonic! After a heated battle Sonic destroys the Eggman Robot and the Death Egg begins to explode.

 

Sonic and Tails fly down and come across mysterious island called Angel Island. This island is floating by the power of the precious stone called Master Emerald, but now this mysterious island are dropping down to the ocean surface because the Death Egg had been falling on this island. Sonic and Tails are attacked by a Red Echidna named Knuckles the guardian of the island.

 

Knuckles steals the Chaos emeralds from Sonic, being tricked by Eggman that he is an enemy come to take the Master Emerald.While Sonic and Tails are entangled by Knuckles, Eggman repairs the Death Egg and preps it for launch.

 

Sonic manages to jump on Death Egg just as it’s flying off. After confronting Eggman on the Death Egg, Sonic defeats Eggman once more and the Death Egg plummets back to Angel Island.

 

Back on the ground Dr. Eggman begins the repairing Death Egg again. Feeling Knuckles has served his purpose, he sends EggRobo to eliminate this potential threat. EggRobo finds Knuckles relaxing in Mushroom Zone and drops a bomb on him but Knuckles manages to survive. Enraged, the Wild Echidna sets off to defeat EggRobo. Meanwhile Sonic and Tails explore the island to find traces of the Death Egg and find out Eggman’s fate. After and Epic showdown between Sonic and Knuckles, Eggman uses the opportunity to finally steal the Master Emerald and re-launches the Death Egg. With the power of the emeralds, Sonic goes after Eggman, who has taken the Master Emerald into space.

 

Sonic and Tails secure the Master Emerald and return it to Knuckles on Angel Island. With it’s power restored, the Angel Island lifts off into the sky as Sonic and Tails fly off into the sunset.

 

But this humiliating defeat only serves to further Eggman’s rage, and he has determined once and for all to rid himself of Sonic. Eggman revisits – and improves – the very best of his creations to defeat our spiked hero.

 

And so a new Adventure begins…

 

 

Not sure if this is the official English story or translated from Japanese, but it's the first time (that I'm aware of) that South and West Island have been named for the Western releases.

So why have Sega decided to finally release the Sonic that every fan has wanted for over a decade, but only as a digital download?

 

I don't mind it being a digital download, but maybe they're only giving it half of their attention?

I'm a bit disappointed in the news that there will be multiple episodes. I'd rather SEGA just made one complete game, release it on a disc, enabling us to play eet from start to finish in one go. How long will it be in between each episode? If it's mentioned here, then I've missed it, and I'm sorry for that.

 

Still, this is the Sonic people have wanted for years. Better late than never. :heh:

I'd rather it was done at the start, though. If anything, I think it might lose momentum? How many people will download the first episode but then don't/opt to not get the second or third episodes?

exactly... it's kinda ironic a sonic game making you wait for the next release..

 

but oh well lets wait until they announce how they're doing this.

Erm, it's a 2D sidescrolling sonic game similar in length to the mega drive games. Even with all those 3D graphics I'd imagine that it will be about 500MB in size, max. So you're saying that episode one and two should be released on a 50GB Blu-Ray each? It would cost a lot of unnecessary cash to put it out in stores.

 

Arcade title only doesn't mean they're giving it half their attention. Have you played Shadow Complex?

It's been suggested that each game will feel like a full game in itself, and the split will be remniscent of the one between S3 and S&K. Surely having it episodic just means we get to play it sooner, and that can only be a good thing.

It looks awesome, and the idea behind it is awesome. Unfortunately I can't shake the skepticism. This is SEGA. They haven't got it right in how many years? How much of the team that worked on the original Sonics are left. Not many I would imagine. There's more to making an old school Sonic game than just making it LOOK like one. The music, the levels, the secrets are all about what made the originals great. I don't just want to run through some really cool, retro looking levels with no thought put into them whatsoever. Wow how cynical am I? :) As for the episodic element. Can't say it bothers me all that much if each episode is the length of a standard game anyway. I'm more curious as to why they're bothering to have it in episodes. I'd be happy with just the one game. Do they really have that many ideas? Or is it just a way to cash in.

It's good to see that Sega are finally doing the 'right' thing i.e basically what fans have wanted since Sonic and Knuckles if we're completely honest and that's a true sequel to the third game(s).

 

The only mistakes they have made so far is insisting to call Robotnik 'Eggman' - something that I will NEVER accept as a true Sonic fan, plus the running animation which could do with being tweaked to match the earlier games.

 

My only other 'want' at the moment is Special Stages, they really need to make a triumphant return along with being able to become Super-Sonic in the regular levels once more.

 

Ah well I can still dream I guess... at least they are finally on the right track now though and indeed the correct dimensional plain.

What was shown wasn't Sonics top speed, so expect it to be the same as past games. Read it on the Sega forums.

A few of my thoughts.

 

What was wrong with the homing attack? That was cool!

 

The only Sonic games I've played - a megadrive game/arcade machine game. I think it was the original Sonic the Hedgehog game but I'm probably wrong, the series is so confusing with the number of releases. Also played Sonic 3D, which was OK but frustrating. Also saw many of the early Sonic cartoons which I remember enjoying, that was some time ago.

 

I'd be up for them to include both a sprite model of sonic as well as the new one. I actually think it would work quite well playing through the nice new HD worlds whilst playing as one of the earlier Sonic models.

 

They definitely need to keep the original music, and lots of actual platforming like in the arcade machine game I remember playing.

 

What were the powerups in the game I'm talking about? The megadrive game and the arcade machine version may well have been different, but I'm pretty sure the megadrive version was the one with the blue/gold shields. Were there any other power ups in that? Running boots?

So it looks like 3 or 4 (depending on if they treat S3&K as one or two games) Episodes, each based on their respective game.

 

Although it would be nice to have some brand new concepts for Zones, too.

I think that was it. It was such a well-balanced game. But yes, it does sound like you've played the original game. The coin-op versions of it were literally the Megadrive version, not to be confused with "Sonic Arcade", which was isometric and used a trackball.

I'm quite liking it! At least 4 zones with the return of the Sonic 1 special zone!! The music on the first zone also sound catchy.

 

:( They've taken it down. However, the image in that link saying 'this is what Sonic 4 should look like' is amazing! I'm now disappointed with how the game looks.
