VG247:

Remember when, back in May, Bethesda Europe managing director Sean Brennan lamented about the Wii’s dry-as-a-desert pool of “mature” games? Well, for those who don’t, he also teased the “really big” announcement of a mature Wii game from Bethesda.

VG247 asked Bethesda VP Pete Hines for clarification concerning that title, and here’s what he told us:

“[sean] was referring to the Wheelspin Wii game Bethesda is publishing in Europe (only) and that is being shown in our booth at GamesCom this week.”

Wheelspin is — if the title didn’t give it away — a racing game. Its goal, in addition to going really, really fast, is to “push the hardware further than any other Wii racing game to date.”

It’s out this autumn, if you’re interested.

ROLLCAGE ON PS1 looked better image..

well here it is..

I know it's early days yet for the game but developers need to stop takng the piss.. this is NOT what people mean by a mature game and they know it..

Haven't we known about this for AGES?!... I have anyways.

It's not Bethesda's game, they've picked it up off another developer.

And it's in early alpha build.

VG247/Pete Hines are mistaken?

This game is not the same game as the one Bethseda is in the middle of developing for Wii. They already said the game they are making is a 2010 Title and this game they are publishing in Europe is already out in the States.

http://www.vg247.com/2009/05/18/bethesda-to-target-mature-wii-audience-with-really-big-announcement/

Sean Brennan, managing director, Bethesda Europe, has told GI that the company is set to follow in Sega’s footsteps by working on a mature Wii title. He also revealed the company plans to “make an announcement on a really big Wii game this year.”“I’ve got consoles at home but I wouldn’t sit and play an 18-rated game with my family on the Wii,” he said. “Is there space in the Wii market for that? I think there is, but again, it’s all about finding out how big that is. Is it 5 per cent? If it’s five per cent of the market and you can own that space it’s worth doing because you can achieve volume. If you can’t own it at five per cent, it’s not worth doing, quite frankly,” he added. “We have huge respect for the Nintendo platforms, and from a marketing perspective globally they’ve been phenomenal. It would be churlish to ignore that space,” Brennan went on. “It was a problem with the DS space as well, because as soon as you spot the bandwagon, it’s already too late. People don’t get that. There are still some people jumping on the bandwagon but it’s not within our business philosophy.”

This is an absolute joke.

About a 10min video of this got released weeks ago, with the same type of gameplay and was interspursed with Alpha build info.

Not to say the final product won't look aweful, and if they're releasing that crap as the debut trailer it probably will, but I think it is still early on.

Well even Eurogamer wrote about it over 2 weeks ago...

Bethesda to publish Wheelspin News

Bethesda has snapped up Archer Maclean's Wii-exclusive racer Wheelspin, and plans a release sometime this autumn.

The setting is futuristic and the action is spread across interplanetary tracks where cars reach speeds of 650kph. Developer Awesome aims to push the hardware "further than any other Wii racing game to date", with 60fps and 480p widescreen set as the target.

"You have to see the graphics moving to believe it's coming out of a Wii," said Maclean in a statement.

Solo mode involves time, shortcut, find-the-spanner challenges, while Race mode shoves seven other cars into the picture. Battle mode, on the other hand, equips weaponry for a good old dust-up.

Split-screen multiplayer will work with the latter two modes, and developer Awesome Play will support Wii remote, nunchuk, GameCube controller and steering wheel control methods.

Archer Maclean's videogame career stretches back decades. He's been responsible for classics like IK+, Dropzone and Jimmy White Snooker, plus more recent hits like puzzler Mercury for PSP. He must be very old.

Fuck knows what this guy was smoking when he said all this though!... unless he's looking at a different build! Edited by Retro_Link

Gamescon Trailer >_>

With the exception of the distortion effect on explosions that looked and felt like a game straight out of the n64 era. It had lots of racing/battle veihicles games (which I quite liked).

I'm just not sure this is the sort of game I'd pay $60 (thats what its selling for) for. If it was budget priced maybe, but it just doesn't look worth it.

What annoys me though is if a developer puts out a title with poor visuals, are they doing it because of the limitations of the hardware or because they're lazy? If it's because they're lazy does it mean they'll be just that when it comes to the gameplay and core mechanics?

But anyway, this is early, so... I guess I'll save my judgement for release.

aha i knew it I created a thread on this a while back when it was called speedzone..

damn... it looked back then and it didn't change much... but it did have 8-player split screen? you know how i always complain about split screen .. now I really can't anymore :D

I thought it was already out in North America?

As a WiiWare game, it's OK.

A a game on a disc for retail... painful.

Developer Awesome aims to push the hardware "further than any other Wii racing game to date", with 60fps and 480p widescreen set as the target.

Bar the 480p widescreen, didn't F-Zero GX did 60fps, way faster, with better graphics and with lots and lots of cars (or ships) onscreen back in 2003? And that's a rhetorical question.

F-Zero GX - melting eyes since 2003

If I was being really cynical, I'd say F-Zero X on N64 looks better, but that'd be a stretch too far. If not too far.

If it wasn't for the fact that this is an official trailer, I'd say this looks bad enough to be a fake.

I remember ReVolt and this does have that similar ring to it.

Erm... clearly it's a budget release title and believe me when I say there are far worse looking budget release racers on the Wii than this (I've had the "priviledge" of playing them. Thanks Zoo Games :indeed:) but it doesn't look great. I remember seeing stuff of this awhile back, of course with 'alpha build' written on it but it hasn't changed since then and looks virtually the same. Not exactly a prize pig for Bethesda to pick up for publication in Europe and don't really know why they would. ::shrug:
