Yahoo and Microsoft team up to take on Google

Yahoo and Microsoft have announced a long-rumoured internet search deal that will help the two companies take on chief rival Google.

Microsoft's search engine will power the Yahoo website and Yahoo will in turn become the advertising sales team for Microsoft's online offering.

Yahoo has been struggling to make profits in recent years.

But it rebuffed several takeover bids from Microsoft in an attempt to go it alone.

"This agreement comes with boatloads of value for Yahoo, our users, and the industry. And I believe it establishes the foundation for a new era of internet innovation and development," said Yahoo chief executive Carol Bartz.

The deal became possible after Yahoo's co-founder Jerry Yang stepped down as chief executive of the company.

I don't think I can ever see a world where we don't use Google. It's just too implemented within internet browsers and common knowledge these days. I'd be surprised if "Googling" something isn't in the dictionary already.

I don't see a problem with Google, they definitely make life easier for a lot of people. My family were amazed by how much faster and easier it is to use Chrome as opposed to IE, and have made it their default browser.

Collins dictionary already includes it as a verb. Oxford English dictionary don't as far as I know. To be honest I'm not sure anyone, not even microsoft, can bring down the behemoth of google.

Microsoft have a search engine?

Edit: As for browsers. I now use Google Chrome, with added AdBlock.

Hmmmm, Bing. I just gave it a go with a few searches. It came up with relevant results, but it seems pretty much like a stripped down google. It's completely missing things like google scholar and books, which I use all the time. Conclusion: I'll probably stick with google for the time being.

did you know that if you search for google, you get a "divide by zero" "out of range" exception. then the whole internet crashes and everybody wins

Who the fuck uses Yahoo? People must have it set as they're homepage back in 99.

Microsoft just doesn't get it, simply copying Google won't give anyone a reason to change, no matter how much Bing! is like Google. Google managed to become number 1 because it was the first search engine that besides doing what it was supposed to, it wasn't cluttered with shit everywhere. Even today I barely notice the ads when I use it.

If MS stops thinking about all the moneyz from advertisement for a second and create something really new like a semantic search, then maybe it can compete.

Apparently the yahoo homepage is the world's most visited website, that is what I've heard. I find it hard to believe, but I guess it is all their additional services besides search which gives them that title.

For better or for worse I use Google for basically everything. Googel search, iGoogle, Gmail, Google Documents (which I love!), Google Maps.

It's just a bit too convenient.

I think the best way would be for them to get it into schools. Most schools have Google as their hompage. I first used Google in primary school, so I used that ever since.

I don't have a homepage...

I use Yahoo for plenty of things not searching. Yahoo offers a fair bit over google still. I hated Chrome, and basically still only use google as a search engine for links and the occasional picture. I've never had much trouble with the Yahoo search either though.

Actually Yahoo Directories is pretty good. Infact any directory service is better than a search engine. You can find more specialised stuff and answers rather than typing loads of words into google and reading the first couple of results it gives you.

With Directories the searching has already been done for you (by saddos spending hours on the internet) and it's all categorised for easiness. Give it a go.

Google got too big, and now nothing can stop it.

It will most likely thrive of this, competition does good for them and they have said they want it in the past.

If something does replace google in the near future, I doubt it will be Bing, even with MS teaming up with Yahoo. I think other people have said why this is, enough in this thread already, so I'm not going to bother, as I agree with most of it.

I use Chrome on the PCs at school (they don't have it installed, I use a portable version). I think I might switch to it once the Mac version comes out. The thing I really like about is just having the Google Search and URL search in the same text field. At home I use Safari, which is basically the same browser under the hood (besides a few extra java things in chrome), so the speed isn't really anything new to me.

Yahoo is pretty popular here in Australia, but not really as a search engine =S They teamed up with a major free-to-air television broadcaster, yahoo7 its called. People use it for news/weather/email etc. Quite popular indeed.

Google would be by far the most popular search engine.

And since we got on the topic... I use firefox :) Cant be bothered setting anything else up again... lol.

Once you've managed to replace the verb of the function you provide with your own name, you're pretty much safe.
